For example, let's say that humans are the only intelligent life that have one brain, whereas all other intelligent alien life have multiple brains, where the instinctual and intellectual parts are split. This makes it so both parties see the others as animals, because humans cannot differentiate between the animalistic and the intellectual, but the aliens switch between the two extremes. Within this framework you could make humans shine without becoming overly indulgent.
