Within this framework you could make humans shine without becoming overly indulgent.

The core concept was solid in a 'pure human-wank' sort of way, so I can forgive it for its clumsy moments and occasionally retarded contrivance. The action scenes were competently done and it felt like it had actual stakes and reasonably likable characters. However, this only makes the absolute garbage that is the sequel all the more confusing. He's no Poul, Banks, or Len, but he at least should've been competent enough to know better than to write all that trash.
Gone are the action scenes, all replaces by a bunch of dudes standing in a room *dictating* an action scene verbatim. Gone is the core concept of the series, replaced by a game of failed intergalactic telephone that results in the WHOLE conflict being a misunderstanding. If you were going to evolve upon the core concept of the first one, he should've made the ark crash land on a planet full of carnivores and do the opposite of the first book where they need to embrace their savage side, or at the very least confront it, but no it's the most contrived shit imaginable swinging wildly from misunderstanding to misunderstanding with no consistency. One minute you're watching an alien make gaga eyes at a human until they become gay lovers, the next minute you're watching someone commit a heckin' terrorism.
