Summon undead skeletons, the tall ones with the black armor. Send them to fight from afar. They are completely immune to all rays. The only way the beholders can kill them is through melee which is poor.

I love greater basilisks. Their petrification ability is countered by a level 1 spell called "protection from petrification". With that spell on, they're just free EXP, and a huge amount too. It's the fastest way to level up early on in BG1. The second fastest way is to hit up the sirens.

Respect for not using the shield of balduran cheese. Hit and run spells, combined with an improved haste melee grinder tend to shred beholders.

Just get Korgan, with enough enchanted gear he will have enough saves to 100% save vs any Beholder abilities even on AI enhancing/difficulty mods and Berserk can't be dispelled.
Or yeah, hit and run spells outside of FoV are the strongest ones like scounting with one invisible ally then casting 3-4x Skull Traps or whatever, later that fire dragon breath spell which ignores Magic Resistance

Yes, the original has different low-level spells. Sleep is indeed really strong, as is Web. I think Color Spray is much better than in SoA as well.

Anomens quest is about whether or not he is able to fulfill being a moral and just champion of his faith, and put the law above his own personal interests. If you push him towards vengeance he utterly fails at this which is why he becomes CN, gets rejected by the Radiant Heart and becomes a bitter drunkard who hates himself and everyone around him.

Martial classes rule the day in BG1 though, Composite Longbow on high strength martials carries you through pretty much the entire game up to Sarevok.

It's not an expansion's story that I can in good conscience call canon. It does have some cool ideas in there that I genuinely enjoyed, but there are some contradictions to canon, too, that I will say in the spoiler below.

Skie gets killed by Soultaker, a dagger that you found at the bottom of Durlag's Tower that was subsequently taken from you and then destroyed to awaken Aec'Letec, the Nalfeshnee in Ulgoth's Beard. There is no way canonically that Soultaker could have been used to kill Skie when it was destroyed previously.

There isn't one, the writer for Aerie ignored how magic works in the setting so he could give her a tragic backstory, even if, bare minimum by ToB it would've been trivial to restore her wings.

There's better things to contingency. If you're going to minmax anyway then the actual best defence is quickload and you just only use contingencies offensively.

The problem here is that King of Shadows campaign is overall significantly worse than the expansion, but with BG2 it's the opposite. He still should play it because it's a single story and some elements (like Jerros) are definitely worth it and even have mentions in the expansion.
