Leadership responded by immediately cancelling most of their extra projects and used the employee retention money to buy stock off existing employees and then fire them.

Sony has a clause in their acquisition agreement that they get to barge in and take control if Bungie can't turn a profit. At the same time, Bungie executives have been getting bonuses regularly as part of the acquisition agreement. The last bonus is scheduled for summer of 2026.

They literally stripped out content they didn't want to take dev time updating, and then spent dev time updating even older content to replace it for a mere fraction, meaning they were willing to do work, but not "too" much work.

If you measure your city in GDP (yes that is how things are measured) having a bunch of janitors, store clerks, drivers makes the city seem less productive since all these people get paid relatively little. You have to understand not only was Ubisoft paying these people stupidly good salaries but realized that they could work literally from anywhere, so the city had to make some incentive to get them to actually live in the city.

Go into a map at a random spawn point, grab loot and guns, extract safely at a designated extraction zone. Meanwhile other players want the same loot and will typically shoot on sight, and NPCs wander about that attack everybody to cause fights to escalate as everyone hears what's going on. If you die, you lose all the shit on you, including the gear you brought into the run as what you extract with persists. Rinse and repeat as you build your gear and faction reputations up for progression depending on the game.
