Well there's another AC game for that and it wasn't satisfying. The reason why is because they didn't present the issue in a justifiable manner. How could Achilles know what happens if they take the artifact? Why are they dismissing Shay like a group of teenagers rather than solving it like adults? Why are the Templars on the right side of history now? This is where AC writing started to go downhill and it released on the same day as Unity which wasn't a well written game either.

Yeah, that one was also a stinker... really cool concept at the high level, but they fumbled pretty bad.

Not sure what you’re talking about, this was the least revenge bad story I’d seen in a while.
Noae’s mother stand in asks what she’s going to do. “Kill all of them.” She nods and says good.
Naoe is pissed off if yasuke makes her spare the female lord he wants to fuck but she wants to kill.
She has a dozen scenes where she begs for violence and fighting over anything peaceful. Says numerous times time when refering to extended groups which were loosely associacated with the horsemen that they all must die. In the second half of the game after she does a shit ton of killing, often times agaisnt people who as barely related to her mission, she has a sliver of doubt that maybe killing all these people won’t heal her, but its barely an after thought to her.
There is no stong message about revenge bad in this story at all. At best, she second guesses herself in like maybe two scenes, while she has twenty or more scenes where she’s bloodthristy with no remorse.

The moments she is resolute stand at odds with all of the moments where she wavers or outright offers mercy or forgiveness, and Yaya's entire questline and everything with the monks and especially with Junjiro where Naoe is thematically forced to confront her actions from the opposite side and it's shown as a deeply painful and regretful moment for her.
Plus, the entire thing with Yasuke. Her offering him forgiveness and even friendship is disgusting, he slaughtered her people. Was he just following orders? Sure. That doesn't make it okay and she should have dug that hidden blade he was obsessed with right into his temple and buried him as soon as she was done using him for his connections and strength.

I think the reason “revenge bad” narratives are so common is because there’s a very easy argument against revenge because even if you get revenge, it doesn’t undo what happened to you, and also because innocent people can get caught in the crossfire.

I thought it was very well done. She was about to kill Yasuke until Junjiro stepped in and told her about what she did to his dad. That whole scene was handled well imo. I can see why she would choose to work with Yasuke after that. The problem is more so that both Yasuke and Naoe are presented as these noble characters but in the actual gameplay they literally go around killing hundreds of people, some of whom aren't even soldiers. It would have been cooler if instead they slowly turned evil or corrupted as they killed more and more targets and end up basically being the same as the bad guys by the end.

Justice is just legally sanctioned revenge.

Though, I will say it would be kind of fun to have them begin to take a sort of sadistic pleasure in it. Imagine them sitting around a campfire recounting stories about their killings to each other, drinking sake and laughing. Not outright evil, but it becomes a bit morally dubious at that point.
I think "revenge bad" narratives are common because most people resonate with that more. I feel like most people are passive and would prefer a peaceful outcome, so they write stories that way to appeal to them.
We have to forgive and befriend our monsters. They're just misunderstood, nobody's just a big meanie for the sake of it, and let's not forget the classic 'if you do it, you're just as bad as they are!11!'.

I feel like it's a valid theory considering how much games are used to push certain political and social narratives nowadays.
But I tend to go with Occam's Razor and for me, it just makes more sense as a business decision. These games are all about appealing to the widest possible audience and I feel like that type of narrative is just expected to sell better. Angry revenge narratives have their audience, to be sure, but it's all about how it does with the focus groups, not appealing to a certain niche.
Honestly though, both things can be true, and it probably is actually both. That seems like the most likely scenario to me after thinking about it more, it's both.

Achilles also never brings up the fact he was asking Shay to go look for an Apple (Which is explained in the database) and everything Shay described isn't what an Apple looks like or does in all of recorded history. He gets confused when Shay brings up the earthquake but never voiced anything about it.
