MK Wii had more players than previous games and retained choke points or made them even tighter. There is no excuse for how wide and boring MK World looks. Every track they have shown so far looks like it drives itself
"M-Mario Kart World just looks so casual cos of 24 player-"
peak course coming through
Bowser's Castle 64 is where we peaked
i remember camping on that bridge with a friend and griefing online normies
implying
Does it even have old courses?
no ugly bloom
it's crazy how games from 20 years ago will always look better than new shit
8 no longer allowed you to do that, you would just get kicked if not racing properly. At least this and invisible walls I'm hopeful MK World will fix.
MkWii sucked so bad it tricked people into thinking double dash was good
I remember people being worried about how linear and spacious the track looked in the reveal trailer. Now we know it's the whole game but I'm guessing Stockholm syndrome gets the better of tendies and they all preordered it anyways
the people in your head? people always liked both dd and especially mkwii
It's the only launch title, they don't have much of a choice desu
Other way around for me, MK Wii is so good with perfect controls, amount of depth, roster and course selection that it made me realize how bad Double Dash was. is the only good thing in DD and it's in Wii.
People liked MKWii but DD was seen as a black sheep for a long time until Gamecube nostalgia started kicking in.
The point isn't that MKWii is good,it's just an example
honestly dd would be great if the controls just weren't retarded. i remember the coop gimmick being fun with my nephew
Anon. Its for kids. We’re talking like 6 year olds to 12.
How does this argument make sense when the we are literally comparing it with older MK games that have less braindead course design. Tons of family friendly games have a modicum of challenge
smk is balls to the wall hard
Probably the dumbest post I’ve seen today, and I’ve been browsing Anon Babble for hours. MKWii was an amazing fluke. It’s the obvious peak of the series.
I wish they would bring back the missions from DS instead of fucking open world.
the more I look at other Mario Kart games for comparison, the more I realize that track design by itself is not a strong suit of this franchise since it rarely actually pushes you for challenge besides certain shortcuts; spectacle, themes and music were always more of a driving force. the entirety of MK design has always been obstacles and hostile opponents that just happens to make these course designs some seriously chaotic shit.
i think our brief snippet of world footage mostly looks so boring because aside from the usual blue shell bullshit, everything else was so passive despite it being 100cc. the AI were spamming items behind the player, and everything was missing or red shells were inexplicably veering completely off-course. the only racer to even challenge the guy playing was the Donkey Kong rubberbanding to rival with him, and the AI literally grind-rail flipped off the track at one point so it's not like it's trying to pose a challenge either.
This one’s great but I want Luigi’s mansion to return
ironic because the best wii tracks are from n64 and gba. they just lacked good controls in their respective games
Love this course so much. Damn I should’ve gotten into MkWii back in 2008 but I thought it looked gimmicky with the wheel
I'd go so far as to say the more the series advanced and got easier to play, the less interesting actually racing the newer courses became.
MK Wii was peak casual and a shit game, however
it's so that 200cc will actually be driveable and the meta.
you need to be like -13 years old to be buying mario kart or have a girlfriend who wants to play video games with you but nothing that a 7 year old wouldnt be able to understand within 15 seconds of the game starting
Mk wii is the worst Mario Kart
No bait
The only Mario Kart I dropped
This. Inb4 some faggot posts a gay speedrun of funky kong clipping out of bounds and getting a .001 laptime
provides no alternatives to what a non-casual Mario Kart experience is
The answer is Super Circuit by the way
DS
every casual got filtered by skating dry bones
Anon. Its for kids. We’re talking like 6 year olds to 12.
All the more reason it's retarded to ask them or their parents to spend 80 dollars for a game
but muh pack in
Won't stay that way forever.
It's MKDS. The only game where you can break rubberbanding with snaking. Either gitgud or get filtered
Whatever, man. The difference in skill between 9999VR players and everyone else was staggering in MKWii, and the modern games have become far more casual + sterile.
Any game that rewards sandbagging doesnt deserve to be taken seriously
10/10
You can tell if a track is good based on the consistency of you finishing in first or second place (if you are a skillful player). With shit tracks that are braindead to drive it's almost random and way too luck-based
It's actually the opposite. Nintendo didn't crack down on cheaters in mkwii as hard as switch so max rank players in MK8DX are better
snaking
i forgot about this. another reason why ds and 8 are kusoge. it's not fun to do
any game with item spy
competitive
Huge downgrade to Double Dash, the snaking miniturbo time in DS lasts way too long compared to DD which requires consistent skill.
The silver lining is that it's the last Mario Kart to let you dodge blues itemless.
so max rank players in MK8DX are better
...at mobile phone tracks
I’m going to say it:
Coconut Mall isn’t even that good, and isn’t even the best in its cup. That belongs to Wario’s Gold Mine.
Coconut mall being the standout Wii track speaks volumes about the quality of game Wii is
posting my christian girlfriend without my permission
This 90% of maxVR players I raced in wii used ocarina cheats
They're making the base game stages lame on purpose so they can sell the good ones as DLC.
All the more reason why the $80/90 pricetag is outrageous. It's going to be a DLC dispensary just like MK8D.
Coconut mall being the standout Wii track
I've never ever heard of this. What makes Wii tracks great is the choice of retro bangers
Most new tracks also range from at least good to great though: Moo Moo Meadows, Mushroom Gorge, DK Summit, Wario's Gold Mine, Koopa Cape, Maple Treeway, Grumble Volcano (big noob filter), Dry Dry Ruins, Bowser's Castle, Rainbow Road
crying about mario kart looking "casual"
what are you niggers even doing at this point
8 just casualized and randominzed too much while in wii you had to consider so many things like jump drift = faster, wheelies and chaining 3 frame window, wheelie instead of trick rams shrooms, highe rjump if trick and jump att he same time, if 4-6 don't spam to open item asap, others can get thunder cloud first so yuo don't get it, all those shortcuts, items like the cloud require skill, everything is more punishing, having to get the mini turbo after lakitu pulls you up. worst thing about 8 are the coins. i know deluxe partially fixed this by letting you hold twoitems again but it's insane they released a game where 1-3 have a 50% chance to get a fucking coin they can't defend themselves with
Mogs mario kart in your path
Believe it or not, the entire point of kart racers--and you can read this on Wikipedia right now if you want--is that tracks are very windy and crazy, not braindead giga wide highways. If I want that I can just play Burnout 3
Wii only had 5 good new tracks. Mushroom gorge, wario’s gold mine, bowsers castle, rainbow road and koopa cape.
What makes Wii tracks great is the choice of retro bangers
That was 7, which makes it all the more infuriating that so many great courses were wasted on such a garbage game.
Yeah, the jump to Mario Kart Wii from DoubleDash was crazy, it's like Nintendo forgot how to do good graphics.
Reminder that all the youtubers and streamers getting firsthand access to the games have said that they were playing the game in 50cc. If the game looks “slow” to you, that’s fucking why.
It's not simply the speed of the game that's the problem it's the track design.
Personally don't even think Mushroom Gorge comes close to most of the others I named. Moo Moo Meadows is the best ranch-themed track in the series and just fun to drive, DK Summit is at least a nice change of pace with all the ramps and has a good shortcut, Maple Treeway rewards good drifting and just looks and sounds amazing (the phone version doesn't do it justice obviously), Grumble Volcano probably wouldn't even fly in the newer games because too mean, Dry Dry Ruins has that ramp trick in the ruins and again good drifting. And while I wouldn't say it's a highlight, Coconut Mall is also decent at least
Reminder that all the youtubers and streamers getting firsthand access to the games have said that they were playing the game in 50cc
why are you lying? treehouse played it at 100cc first day and 150cc the second day +
Shame Sonic universe has negative charm, even if what you say is true which I doubt
whats so terrible about 7?
Why no love for that night time city course? It actually had dangerous traffic and I remember having fun learning the ideal route.
nitro tracks are terribly designed with courses that are either insanely bland with nothing going on like Cheep Cheep Lagoon and Rock Rock Mountain with a cliff that has a genuine blindspot for the immediate falling rocks
kart unlocks are randomized so getting what you want is pure RNG, kart customization in general is scuffed into everyone beelining red monsters for offroad+speed since nothing else matters
horrible roster where unlike DS which was small based on limitations, many DD/Wii characters that made sense were excluded in favor of recolors and meme picks
no offline VS mode, something Super Circuit had
no mission mode to have more content for a handheld entry, even though DS had it and Wii had a successor in tournaments
no online Friendrooms
VR system changed to a cumulative points system rather than keeping the skill-based system which results in online matchmaking barely meaning anything
the item spy mechanic which while mentioned by someone else earlier as a flaw in DS was actually something considered and designed around for online PvP there, since overpowered items like triple shells/bananas weren't allowed, and neither was holding your items (you could only immediately place) so that the game was still kept competitive and you couldn't use cheese strategies with it. In 7, the item balance was not changed between single and multiplayer leading to an online meta of consistent camping and turtling if opponents had items like triple reds or anyone had a blue shell
new items like Tanooki Leaf discourage genuine play in favor of intentionally griefing a player with it, since the practical use for it is near nonexistent compared to legacy items
It's a lot of small things that add up to it being pretty miserable to play. During the time it was out, people tended to rush back to playing DS for a handheld MK experience, or Wii for online PvP with some only putting up with 7 until 8 came out to drive it to irrelevancy, and for good reason.
It actually had dangerous traffic
Not in MK8D.
wider streets
fewer cars
nerfed hit reaction
turbo arrows three times bigger
MK8D is an unplayable borefest on anything but 200cc and 200cc is weird and clearly not what the game is designed around. Not expecting much else from World.
wasn't it made by retro studios? why did nintendo let metroid devs make a racing game
it was my first mario kart so im pretty easy on it but all of your critiques are very true. (it's still my favorite.) playable shy guy made it great for me and the wii sports resort tracks were kino
wish it had more dev time but i guess saving the 3ds's launch year was more important (it was.)
How does DS look better than Wii?
ds doesn't have unnecessary bloom for one
I hate how much Nintendo loves bloom, especially the shit they use since Wii U. Ironically makes all their games look outdated out of the gate
your ps1 nostalgia
no tail
I actually liked the bloom they used specifically on Mario Circuit, added to the sepia picturebook vibe. Obviously upscaling breaks it so you should always disable bloom when using Dolphin.
Looking at the castle is making me go crosseyed, how does anyone like this shit
DS had some good shit but I wish they'd taken a better course from it for World than Airship Boretress.
Super Circuit
worst mk, doesn't have the charm and high difficulty of smk and no 3d. it's like the worst of both worlds
It's from an upscaled screenshot. It's blurry (duh) but you don't really see double as much at native res.
high difficulty
Super Circuit's one of the only Mario Karts where giant shortcuts are developer-intended and the norm. It's also the hardest in the series to 3-star, DS and Wii you can cheese with snaking and 7 and 8 simply just hand it to you for ranking first all 4 courses.
youtube.com
100%, always hated that one. It just looks so dull
Wii
snaking
wat
Meant to say snaking (DS) and bikes (Wii). Bikes in MKWii are stupidly OP to the point of the AI being unable to keep up.
not like returning tracks in world actually play like they used to from what i've seen
ares emulator squashed my aspect ratio for some reason
Man I'm rusty, I won this by equal points with the runner up because DK and Bowser rubberbanded on my ass and then pulled out their cheat items right before the finish line repeatedly. It's actually kinda funny how making the AI use items in later games made the game more obnoxious with how they all target you, but you forget how much the games fucking cheated early on.
MK64 already had slipstreaming
How did I never know this wtf. What other games of that era even have slipstreaming? I always thought MK DS effectively pioneered it
It pulls from a bunch of Sega games
No, it wasn't. They assisted, likely in porting dkcr assets.
IIRC they did the Retro (lol) tracks and the Donkey Kong one. Ironically those were the only tracks in 7 that weren't complete dogshit.
i can hear his voice in my head
