Been in love with the franchise ever since I rent it the first time for the N64. Anticipated Melee‘s release and it might be the first game I‘ve been hyped and the one I‘ve possibly been most hyped about ever since.
And it delivered. I remember playing after school up to 10pm the day I first got my hands in it, with a frienxd (I remember I didn‘t have a Gamecube memcard yet). I was expecting some Nintendo characters but not that girl-looking blue-haired dude with a sword.
Also remember checking out their website for Brawl updates and reveals. I‘ve since slowly fallen off from the series despite having played Ultimate quite a bit. Nothing compared to the Melee era.
I may just play it a little now, but this series is possibly my favorite one.

It's so bizarre: Melee might be the most successful fighting game community of all time. Competitive play hasn't just survived, but thrived for more than 20 years. Look at the tournaments entrants for any game you can think of and they all pale in comparison to Melee's except for supermajors. A lot of it is because people play modern fighting games online, but I think in-person tournaments are an undeniable aspect of community. Watching Brian have a mental breakdown because SF6 sucks isn't the same as going to a local with your boys and talking shit.

All Anon Babble memes aside I think this is well done and very touching. The lifelong bonds created by something as simple as a video game, which brought all kinds of people together, from pasty nerds like M2K to thugs like Wes and the DA crew is really quite beautiful. Seeing the banned players from the community come out, pay respect and reminisce about the good times they had together with Hax is nice.
