Older movies (70s and earlier) that deserve a vidya adaptation?

Older movies (70s and earlier) that deserve a vidya adaptation?
Plenty of 80s films are getting game adaptations (Terminator, Robocop, Rambo). But what about films from before the 80s? Theres a lot of source material from the 50s, 60s and 70s that's untapped for a video game.

A survival horror Time Machine game about hiding from Morlocks.

A Planet Of The Apes game set in the universe of the original movies where you're an ape hunting humans.

A War Of The Worlds movie where you're hiding from martian hovercraft in 1950s America.

A 2001 A Space Odyssey game?

There was a discussion about video games based on 80s films here yesterday, so I thought it was a discussion worth having.

There was supposed to have been one based on Apocalypse Now

I don't want to be a damn dirty ape

What would Clockwork Orange game be like?

You definitely couldn't get that made these days. Besides the movie pretty much ended perfectly.

It'd be worth making a game about just to have a boss fight with one of Harryhausens monsters.
That having been said, you couldn't really make a game based on the OG Harryhausen films without some bitch on twitter complaining about how a middle eastern character can't be played by a white guy.

could be a fun survival game

1920x.jpg - 1920x1501, 739.92K

I'd like to make a Valley Of Gwangi game where you're a cowboy hunting down deliberately retro looking dinosaurs for the circus.

a game based on THX 1138 would be interesting. i would also say Solaris but idiots would call it sci fi silent hill 2.

we need more pirate games

1920x.jpg - 1000x1646, 605.17K

I'd love to see a video game based on a retrofuturistic version of mars or venus.

The budget a pirate game needs though precludes anyone from a big studio from making one.

Star Wars

Aliens

Alpcalipse now

E.T (kek)

looks like someone is already working on it (or at least a pirate game with the same name)
store.steampowered.com/app/3040220/Captain_Blood/
it doesn't look great from the trailer, but it might be more fun to play than it looks

lolita (1962)

Well itwould be a lot better than the last planet of the apes game we got.

the book is lightyears better.

ok then lolita (1955)

>Alpcalipse now

They already made that game, Spec Ops The Line

I'm surprised no one has ever tried making a Zorro game

orig.jpg - 1250x850, 243.2K

it's a great aesthetic that has just been completely forgotten

Nice choice
I thought of Jason and the Argonauts

It seems more like a Prince Of Persia game than a pirate game.

Yeah, that was what i was saying, there's a surprising ammount of games already done on 70's movies

Greek Myth games tend to generally do well.

any of them good?

Why make a licensed walking simulator?

Zorro stories came out in the 1900s but because of a bunch of copyright and trademark bullshit. He's not in the public domain. Codename steam had to create an original character based on him because they couldn't get the rights to Zorro

There is more of the story to adapt. Issac Arthur Clarke wrote four Space Odyssey books. 2001, 2010, and 2061, and 3000. Only two of those books got an adaptation.

As much as i like the idea of a Zardoz game, i'd rather devs take inspiration from older films than adapt them outright. Like how El Topo inspired the first No More Heroes for example.

could always use more gladiatorial games

1920x.jpg - 1920x2722, 1013.28K

we need some full on spaghetti western games

Django.jpg - 1080x600, 107.54K

I wish there was a game where you could cut off your opponents clothes like in the first Antonio Banderas Zorro movie.

The movie omited the final chapter

The problem with adapting things based on historical/mythological epics is that most of the time it's cheaper and potentially more profitable to make a game based on the original historical event rather than a film adaptation of a specific film version. It's cheaper to make your own Battle Of Thermopalye game than it is to get the rights to 300.

that's fine too as long as it's good. my suggestions are more about ideas than full on adaptations

woman main character

at least she's kinda cute. how good is the gameplay?

Yeah but a video game adapting just that final chapter wouldn't be a very long game.
Clockwork Orange is just such an unpleasant film, that making a video game based on it would be pretty much impossible. Even video games where you're playing an objectively evil person like Fallout or Red Dead 2, don't let you be a sex offender.

Believe it or not Alex was actually toned down in the film because he was considered too unpleasant in the book for even Kubrick to adapt. So he'd have to be toned down even more for a video game version.
At that point you may as well not make a Clockwork Orange game.

Westworld survival horror would be nice.

We got a brief look at a retrofuturistic version of Venus in Wolfenstein 2.

Sadly a westworld game would probably have to be based on the HBO show rather than the original michael crichton movie.

This and Clash of the Titans are kino. The actor of Perseus did VA of Perseus in God of War.

Survival horror Psycho

Fiddler on the Roof adventure game

Eternal Darkness-esque game for Sunset Boulevard

Citizen Kane town builder with a morality system

Rocky Punch-Out. Need I say more?

Ace Attorney styled 12 Angry Men

Clash of the Titans is an 80s movie though it feels like a much older film.

Survival horror Psycho

You could also delve into the underrated Psycho 2 for plot elements. Like how Robocop Rogue City did for Robocop 3 and the Tv show.

Fiddler on the Roof adventure game

A fiddler on the roof game is just going to be a magnet for controversy in the internet age just by the fact it's about Jews fleeing persecution from communists.

Rocky Punch-Out. Need I say more?

Didn't Punch Out start off as a Rocky game but Nintendo couldn't get the rights, so they went to Mike Tyson instead?

They made a game based on FRWL in 2005 so I wonder if they could make a game based on Goldfinger, Dr No or Spy Who Loved Me

Alternatively you could play as Taylor or Nova. Although given Disney owns the rights to the film now, they wouldn't let Nova wear her original outfit.

the kick attack alone makes the game worth it.
Swordplay is fine but you are just as strong as the enemies.
But you can kick them into other enemies, down flight of stairs, against walls to stun them, you can kick objects like barrels, crates, and tables on them or out from where they're standing on and other fun stuff.
You use the environment to recreate the movies use of environment to make the fight a spectacle instead of just standing there killing stuff.

Connery is dead

And all would be walking simulators.

Not with Amazon owning the rights to the James Bond franchise.

Funny how the dude just replaced androids for dinos years later.

Noone had complaints about Still Wakes The Deep. You'd just have to find a way to break up the walking sim parts with actual gameplay.

Apparently he found the animatronics in the Pirates Of The Carribean ride to be very creepy. Which inspired the line "when pirates of the carribean breaks down, the pirates don't eat the tourists!"

Streets of Fire (1980s but who cares?)
Close Encounters of the Third Kind (an open-world clue-chasing game. Toss in some ancient aliens levels of shit with artifact-collecting.)

>A War Of The Worlds movie where you're hiding from martian hovercraft in 1950s America.

Some British indie dev is already doing that and there's a bunch of youtube vids. The project started a couple years ago.
I cam't be assed to find it.

That's based on the public domain source material. Not the 50s film version of the story.

Yeah, I agree, we might need a full reset of the AI, not just Claude.

I know you said 70s but I'd love a Krull game.

I wonder what possessed Rockstar to make a game for The Warriors?
I'm glad they did though.

The fact it's a good movie about brotherhood in a fucked up world.

A 2001 A Space Odyssey game?

There's not a single game director I would trust with this.

This is one of the worst and most overrated movies I have ever seen besides Lost in Translation and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. No, I'm not trolling, and my top 3 video games of all time are Bloodborne, Zelda: A Link to the Past, and Resident Evil 4

I literally hate anyone who likes this movie

you'll get it when you're older

North by north west

Logans run

kys tranny

Then pick a different movie you'd like to see a game based on?

I don't want my video games to be boring walking simulator movies, we already have those, they're called first party Playstation games

You could make it a puzzle game, a multiple choice adventure game. Use your imagination.

Use your imagination

Every single movie or TV show that has been adapted into a video game sucks

What...

How about a forbidden planet game set during the events of the first expedition. Explore the depths of the krell machine and shit.

Is it actually based on the movie or is it based on the original book?

no idea, it just came up when I searched for Captain Blood

Now that's a game I'd definitely play. A horror game with the aesthetics of a 1950s scifi film.
Question is how would you make it convinciingly scary without making it M Rated? It is a G rated film.

The original book came out in 1922. Yeah, definitely based on the book.

The Warriors, Robocop Rogue City, Terminator Resistance, any of the Jurassic Park games.

G rated

Wait really? I thought the bit where the crewman gets murdered in his sleep was quite menacing even if the death was off screen and you only hear the characters *discussing* the fact that he was ripped the fuck apart.

Yep. G Rated film. They worked really well within the limitations of the era.

Logans run

Surprised there hasn't been a video game based on that considering how many video games like Bioshock are inspired by it.

just make it a lulzy GTA clone set in the same universe

That what the Scarface game did.

French Connection

Dirty Harry

Bullitt

70s police game set in grungy New York with LA Noire gameplay would be kino.

Dirty Harry is way too based to have a video game based on it made these days.
youtube.com/watch?v=9rcIJIWqYmo

then do that then and play as a random thug

Dolemite, make an absurdist 70s pimp gta clone with blacksploitation meta

The Towering Inferno survival and rescue game

The Shining trap and survival horror in line of Tecmo's Deception

Dukes of Hazzard

I wonder if Jodorowsky would ever approve of a game based on his films.

IMG_3072.jpg - 568x568, 56.4K

Can't see Fiddler on the Roof as an adventure game. But I've a few movies that could be:

Mary Poppins

The Sting

Casablanca

Annie Hall

In the Heat of the Night

>Dukes of Hazzard

After 2020 there being a Dukes of Hazzard anything is very unlikely.

Mary Poppins

Can you imagine how current year Disney would fuck that up?

I’d love the choice between being straight laced, rogue like Harry, or a Bad Lieutenant level of corrupt.

Some adaptions/inspirations I'd like to see:

Lawrence of Arabia (top pick)

In the Heat of the Night (second or third pick)

Shaft

Forbidden Planet

Chinatown (I guess this is more or less LA Noire)

The Conversation

Once Upon a Time in the West, the Searchers, etc.

Superman

The Birds (probably second pick and easiest to adapt if done like Silent Hill 2)

Invasion of the Bodysnatchers remake

The Pink Panther

Roman Holiday (don't know how this would work but I think it could)

How would you even adapt this into vidya?

What about pre-80s SHOWS? I've got:

Flintstones Fred and Barney RPG a la Mario and Luigi

M*A*S*H 3PS that starts off comical like the movie and gradually becomes the drama of the show

Three Stooges beat-em-up

Roots adventure game

Episodic Twilight Zone game where each episode is a different genre

That move is fucking garbage, though.

deciding to adapt a film to a game has to be one of the stupidest pursuits one could engage in, seems like something a clueless old fuck would do. There are tons of great movies that were made by adapting books to film but there are no truly great games made by adapting a film to a game. Not all forms of media are compatible

B A S E D
A

We desperately need more spaghetti western games.

Lawrence of Arabia (top pick)

Uncharted 3 was okay.

Flintstones Fred and Barney RPG a la Mario and Luigi

Episodic Twilight Zone game where each episode is a different genre

I'd play the shit out of these.

Who says it has to be the Disney version?
I want a soviet Mary Poppins furry ballroom dancing game
youtu.be/Zio4eUVwkD0

A decent tremors game would be nice

Psycho game where you play as Norman Bates

Norman Bates.jpg - 500x281, 15.7K

What happened to it?

For some reason I feel like he'd be more open to something based off The Incal instead, I think it'd work better than his film work anyway. Feels far more narrative orientated and in line with the conventions of science fiction storytelling.

This is for film adaptations not book adapations.

The Birds

How would that work? How would you make that scary as a game?
