Is Outer Wilds a truly perfect game?

It's simple. If you play outer wilds having never heard of it, it is 100% guaranteed to be the best video game experience you've ever had. If you heard people say it's amazing and play it, you'll merely think it's pretty good.

it's perfect in the sense it does everything it wants to do about as well as it needed to.
there's really no wasted gameplay option, no pointless tasks for the sake of it and the story says everything it needs to.
probably one of the few true 10/10 games i've play, along with stuff like shadow of the colossus and portal 1

it is definitely the pinnacle of walking sim games
all the others force you along a path but with outer wilds you only have your own curiosity to guide you and nothing else

i feel like walking sim is not the right term for the game. the jetpack physics alone are incredibly fun and the simulated system with gravity, inertia and 0g are extremely well made. i still boot the game up sometimes because i find moving around just THAT satisfying

Adventure game is closer to what it is. Walking sim implies little to no gameplay, whereas adventure game implies puzzle solving. This game's more exploration heavy than most adventure games, but it's the same vein.

The entire game is not some "BIG BRAIN" puzzler
That you have to put 2 and 2 together sometimes and read text does not qualify a game for that
I mean, what the fuck would La Mulana then be?

Outer Wilds's strength is in the "ingenuity" of its puzzles, theyre extremely simple, yet you get so much satisfaction from solving them
Alot of them you will solve by accident, standing around the QM pillar and falling into the black hole for example
But some of them you solve by experimentation and just throwing shit around until something happens
Only a few puzzles are actually even MEANT to be solved just by thinking
Most of them are solved by reading text found from solving other puzzles too, so its basically reading comprehension test

Another strength is in its storytelling and overall game design
Again, the story is extremely simple, but the complete disregard for the developers to put any limiting objects in your way to reach important pieces of information and lore and just trust that the player finds things in WHATEVER ORDER, then thinks about what he just read and puts the pieces in the correct order himself is something sorely missing from modern gaming.
Its game design is completely antithetical to modern "yellow paint & batman vision" games
Its like the dev trusts that the player isnt a drooling retard (or doesnt care he is one) giving the game a bad score because he thought a puzzle "bugged out"

It boggles my mind this game can be so praised but game devs completely ignoring what the game does best and doing the complete opposite

No, thats stress, and stress can be good when the game manages it well.
The moment you take the core out of the machine, the game will accentuate your stress by playing the "Supernova" soundtrack
It makes you feel like things "matter" this time much more, thats the entire point
Theres then even more stress put on you by the bramble fishes, and knowing you are on a timer, wanting to put the pedal on the metal but knowing that will kill you
That final float past the two fishes feels like ages even though it actually takes like a minute of real time
Then the game releases that stress with the jump finally
If there was no stress involved at all, the "relaxation afterwards" or "moment of silence" or whatever you would call it in design would not feel as genuine, as you would not feel the stress being lifted (because there was none)

each planet or area has a horror theme except your home. fear of falling, fear of deep water, fear of getting lost, fear of closed spaces, fear of the dark, etc. a large part of the game is getting over your fear and facing it head on so that you realize it isn't so bad

I specially liked that nothing is gated. Meaning that there are a lot of instances of you getting to places "early". Some examples:

Landing on the solar station instead of teleporting in

Reaching Giant's Deep core before talking to Feldspar

Landing on the quantum moon knowing just a few rules and then figuring enough of them while there and reaching Solanum

I almost got to the DLC by accident by messing with the satellite for a long time, but long enough to actually notice the Stranger

The space-flight portion of the gameplay unironically filters a shir-ton of players. Most peoole can't into newton's laws.

This is one of the biggest weaknesses of the internet, and I can see why China has its great firewall. I want to be able to discuss things with others across the world but not brown people.
