a 20 year old game still has the best first person melee combat to this date

How the fuck has there not been a game that improves on Dark Messiah, even after all this time? They could make a game that copies the mechanics 1:1 and it'd still be better than anything similar released today. Is it really that hard to do decent first-person melee combat?

Xana is a miracle of the universe.

I wish we got a proper remaster (remake).

mordhau is better but has no singleplayer

fuck off zoomer

Vermintide 2 has surpassed it, in both melee combat and ranged archer/magic combat.

I wish it got a re-release that crashes less

this

Archery and sword fighting all suck in this game because it takes a million hits to actually kill anyone.
For me it's telepathically throwing rocks or kicking people into hazards or off cliffs. It's the one FPS game where you can seriously rack up environmental kills because spikes, pitfalls, throwable objects and fireplaces are everywhere.
It's a shame that there's only one upgrade in the entire game (improved stamina) that helps with kicking people into hazards. Maybe also fire traps.

bait or mental retardation

Dark messiah has ruined oblivion for me
I couldn't play toddslop because the combat was so fucking boring

Vermintide is way better but this game is kinda nice ngl

you find out your dad is evil

your evil dad just wants to be evil together

you get to be evil together with your dad and get a sexy succubus wife

never has there been more a based game

best first person melee combat

No its not the only thing special about the game is the kicking mechanic

lol
lmao

I always wonder when people write shit like this if they are just trolling or not. Yeah a rock to the head will kill enemies, but so will a sword and especially a bow with headshots will have you sticking enemies to walls with ease. Saying weapons are useless is just wrong

Why is physics-based combat a forgotten artform?

Because physics lead to jank and unintended exploits.

cut some rope holding a chandelier

it comes crashing down into the wooden floor creating a deadly drop

can use newly liberated rope to swing to a high point and kick some fag off a cliff

meanwhile the most creative you can get in modern games

hit a parry-timing

press X

watch awesomesauce go wowzers on the screen

kick everything into environmental hazards that are just there

cyclops is just a "circle strafe and stab him in the face" boss (recycled for an encore)

pao kai is an environmental kill (recycled for an encore)

literally only the spider cave (a tiny part of the game) requires a semblance of combat tactics

Yeah, best first person melee combat.

Name one (1) singleplayer game with better first person combat.

Breakdown.

Dying light

Faghau is better

lol

Neither is an accurate descrption. Chandelier drop requires barely any physics anyway, it's usually mostly scripted

Vermintide 2 has surpassed it

troll post

Fix your game, Shartfark employee

the appeal of DM is more about the unfair environmental shit than the actual moment to moment melee combat albeit the melee combat in the game feels pretty much fine as long as you don't try to go toe to toe with the tougher enemies. directional strikes being able to smack enemies into things is great.
what really makes DM great is that the game pushes you towards bullshitting the enemies by making the enemies especially later in the game fucked up and really lethal, which is something that literally every single arkane game afterwards has been strangely extremely resistant to doing

All down to good use of physics and environments. Also shows a better use for magic than just missile attacks. Magic used for simple offense should be ineffective. It's environmental Interaction where magic should shine.

Oh so now we're arguing the degrees of physics? lol
Really goes to show how far modern games have fallen.

Take me back bros...

True

literally stares at her pussy

Was this really necessary??

how do you actually fix the slasher genre and make it palatable
they need to have unreactable mixups and depth to those mixups or they're not interesting to learn or stick with beyond two weeks of playing casually, like chiv 2 has basically no mix
but if they're proper fighting games casuals will get increasingly filtered in a genre that is also largely based around community server mosh pits

yes

fight me physically bitches

How on Earth did you get that cutscene on such resolution...

XanaRose.jpg - 2066x3606, 545.39K

The actual melee combat is pretty terrible.
What makes it awesome is all the interaction and how you do goofy Jackie Chan moves to be efficient in fights.

casuals will get increasingly filtered

just develop a game with SP content and you will have a stream of fresh inexperienced casul butt to put your penis in

for honor was pretty decent for that

post mordhau hours right now

It's probably remade in SFM or Blender or something.
Sometimes I wish for a HD remake and a sequel. But then I have to remind myself nothing is actually a lot better than it getting raped by "modern sensibilities".

Chivalry 2 is the better game and peak of the genre.

This game is massively overrated by people who soijack over the webms but never actually played it. All of the various systems are pretty cool in isolation but the near of the game itself just isn't very good. It's short, buggy, has very little enemy variety, and just isn't balanced against the toolkit you have. Game is trivially easy if you engage with the physics or environmental hazards at all.

What I don't understand is why after all these years hasn't someone 1:1 copied the excellent foundation of Dark Messiah and just built an even slightly better game around it?

In my opinion, let players pick a faction and introduce meta mechanics to drive engagement.
Let casuals do shit like farm NPC mobs, play cavalry or build siege engines to contribute.
Combat should favor skill, but allow shit players to really dedicate themselves to doing disgusting peasant shit like rolling rocks down hills, pouring hot oil or jabbing pikes into horses. Battlefield has a lot of appeal for that kind of thing by letting you drive tanks and shit.

From what I've seen, casuals aren't scared at all by deep combat or complex mechanics as long as they feel like they can hop in and have fun on their own terms.
Then all you need to make somebody want to learn, is make them care about the outcome of the fight.

whenever i watch a duel in chiv 2 it looks like two people flailing at each other until someone makes a mistake with very little opportunities to actually break through someone's guard because of hold parry but i'm not that familiar with it either

You fix it by fucking sticking to the plan you stupid fucks.
Mordhau set out with the premise of not devolving into a janky animation-obfuscating ballerina jerkoff routine.
And what happened?
It became a janky animation-obfuscating ballerina jerkoff routine with piss poor map-objectives and no new content for months.
No wonder it failed.

i-it d-d-didn't f-f-f-fail

Yes it did. It's only populated by the sweatiest of fags now and no one cares about it. As they should.
Absolute retards at the helm.

Yeah but then I yeet the shield into his dumb face and it catches him by surprise.
Then I pick up a fish and give him the spicy tail-whip.

putting aside the bait about an unambiguously successful low budget game failing i'm genuinely curious if you have any opinions on how combat in these games should work, because just swinging into each others' guards because defense is so strong that drags and feints are bad sounds kind of gay. people complain about ballerina twirls (swing manipulation) but how should offense actually work then

Yes.

doesn't even know why mordhau was created in the first place

lol
lmao

i've heard the "no ballerina twirls this time!" and in mordhau's defense they made some of the goofier swing manipulation like reverse overheads and shit weaker or not possible with stuff like the turn cap while swinging.

even chiv 2, which lets you hold guard so drag swings don't force people to guess your timing is filled to the brim with "ballerina bullshit" because it makes it harder to see what you're doing. i ask again, how do you make the combat work without "ballerina bullshit" in a genre that is pretty much fundamentally about manipulating your swings in first person?

you can't complain about something unless you know the solution!!

Yaaaawn.
It is endlessly hilarious to me that mordhau ended up falling in the exact same hole as chivalry 1 did.
Except Chiv1 had better maps and objectives to keep it going.
Torn Banner unironically the better developer.
lol
lmao even

Why are you weird about this

For a single player game, maybe, but there are plenty multiplayer FP melee games that did better combat. Kinda strange really, should be way easier in a single player game...

Because I have mordhaufags.

chivalry 2 is much better in terms of fp melee combat

is it terminal?

You can't really divorce physicality from physics, yes.

Afraid so.

praying 4 u

You can in videogames thougheverbeit.
Whethever the chandelier is falling due to a physics calculation or because a script tells it to play an animation does change the physicality of things.

because source is the only real physics engine

Its always funny to see these threads have the same 2-3 games on repeat, god i wish melee slashers were a bigger thing

fight knight was alright

wait not fight knight i'm thinking of shady knight

Fight knight was great, not a melee slasher though. you must mean shady knight, which was just kinda ok at best

I liked it. I liked doing the little angled kick that gives you big speed boost. just needed more interesting enemy design that didn't universally lose to the easiest move to perform. like actually if they had certain enemies that are immune to slams and certain enemies that are immune to low attacks that would at least be a start
