She was insufferable cunt even in the first game, she was disrespectful even in the first game, so was Joel in the very fucking beginning of the game, he wanted nothing to do with Ellie when Tess insisted on doing the job. They were both insufferable cunts and hated each other. The whole point of the first game was they were both broken and put up a facade or wall around their persona as self-defense mechanism. They were both hurt from losing their loved ones. It's the whole fucking ending of the first fucking game. Joel finally opens up his heart and trying to redeem for shit he's done from wrecking up things after losing Sarah. He saved Ellie for his own personal cause. He seed Ellie as a second chance, as Sarah replacement. At the same time Ellie breaks down, opening up her heart to Joel, finally letting her guards down, trying to trust someone again. That was the whole ordeal at the final scene. She asked Joel if he was lying when he saved her, and not out of personal, selfish gain. She wanted, finally, to trust somebody again.
That's the whole reason for their rift in Part II intro/flashback. Ellie finds out Joel lied. The whole intro of Joel spilling out the beans to Tommy, was perhaps because Tommy asked why the rift between him and Ellie. It's the only reason why Joel talked about it.
It's the sole reason Joel looked like a sorry ass dog in Part II. He knows he fucked up. He has lied to Ellie. And she knows it. Now Tommy knows too. And Tommy knows how terrible of a monster Joel is. Ellie knows too. And they all knew how important Sarah was to Joel. And it doesn't take a genius to figure out what Joel sees in Ellie. Joel was looking sad and guilty the entirety of Part II because he was trying to seek forgiveness, which he never had the chance to get. He deserved his death.
It's just he died in a brutal way right close and personal in front of both Tommy and Ellie. So it haunts them both. Tommy was already haunted Joel's action as a ruthless bandit in the past. Ellie bad a terrible upbringing too. Now they both feel gaslighted because they never granted or give Joel the forgiveness he was seeking. Because after all the 99% evil he has done, the 1% good he did was what kept Tommy alive in their "survival" 20 years prior to the first game, and Ellie for own life too. Even in death Joel had a menacing grasp on them both, living rent ree in their heads lol. That's how "great" the magnitude of Joel's monstrous toxicity is. Joel is Walter White.
Sarah is daughteru and grew up normal and innocent, Ellie on the other hand is peak girl next door and a brat who needs correction.
