The funny thing about this game is that, despite the story being kind of mediocre from the start, this is the moment the plot really shits the bed. It made no sense that she did this. And when the HBO show gets to this point, everyone is going to hate it all over again. If they don't rewrite it, this season won't be nearly as well liked as the first was.

By the time the game released, I saw plenty of people weirdly rationalize that Joel was a "piece of shit" and deserved death, so all the retcons were at least effective enough to fool some into a knee jerk reaction in the short term.

I think that's what Druckmann was aiming for all along; He initially wanted a far greater dilemma than the one that was presented to us in TLOU1's ending, which would explain all the retconning. But it just so happens that human beings deeply care more about the things are closest to us than some propositional rationalistic "greater good," which is why TLOU2 is still loathed to this day.

Either way, what Abby did was far more cruel and utterly unnecessary. Her motives make her infinitely more reprehensible than Joel, but also plain dislikeable in general. The fact they tried this relationship with the trans kid was an incredibly obvious and lame attempt to mirror Joel and Ellie + getting ideological brownie points, but it wasn't remotely as endearing, intuitive or profound as a father and daughter bond.

There's too much about TLOU2's writing that feels mechanistic, where you go "ah yes, I see where they're trying to subvert expectations" that ends up not feeling natural in the slightest, not to mention shallow.
