I go to anime cons once a year, been to a couple videogame cons as well and aside from the latter maybe having an expanded arcade section there isn't much difference between the two. Anyhow, it's pretty boring if you go in alone and gets annoyingly crowded at times but if there is a famous guest you wanted to meet or see what fan merch you might wanna get then it's a nice experience, or if you do cosplay it's a good conversation starter and way to make friends without approaching people first (results may vary depending on the costume ofc).

I've been to conventions but never to video gaming conventions. Gaming conventions sound like the ideal place to meet people, or meet gamer gurls and qt cosplayers, but I feel like it would also be a really bad idea to attempt talking to strange women in public. If they come talk to me, that's great, but if I have to be the one to approach then it's going to be a gamble of wheter I will be treated like a person or a subhumanoid.

It was ever single shitty meme about how trash conventions are in one horrible experience. It was loud as fuck to the point my ears were hurting after half an hour, it was absolutely packed so it was near impossible to get anywhere without a line or being squeezed between next complaint; a fucking SEA of fat ugly people, just the most abhorrent shitshow of ugly I have ever seen and while I don't usually judge people this badly I have to be cause none of these fuckers were washed in any shape or form, wearing dirty clothes and stinking of foulness I cant even begin to image its formation of.

Every booth was a complete waste of space, you could have had a better experience with a website and a downloadable demo. It was heavily LGBTI focused with indie games only being those about shit like I kid you not "Gay Vampires", that was the first booth you saw at the very front of the entrance.

The food was as trash as you could imagine, didn't touch it.

I can't begin to imagine how this shit exists and makes money to fund itself. If you're actually into video games, you would avoid these like the plague which I fucking got because then I got COVID.

No cosplay, just fat sweaty nerds and Z list celebrities like Jonas Neubauer, Metaljesus, and old ass devs (I went to a panel with the leader designer of Torrin’s Passage from Sierra as the main speaker). It was awesome aside from a few weird vendors who would get pissed at people for casually browsing their stuff instead of bringing “a list” of shit they were hunting for.

There were enough interesting things around to play and do for at least a day or two. Kicked some arse at Unreal Tournament, PSMove 'Joust' and learning SW X-Wing Tabletop was cool. I hadn't been to Melbourne before either and wandering around to look at the graffiti was nice.

The following year (or maybe I skipped one between?) basically 70% of panels were "How to be a queer parent gamer!" and I could have seen most of the indiegame area (maybe the only surviving good part) on just the short Sunday ticket and been happily done with it. Meeting the 1-man devs and trying their games in front of them is nice, but even that is a bit too flooded with garbage. There was the odd gem and free key, but especially now unfinished early releases are business-as-usual online 1 decade later.

Meeting and boozing with EVE buddies at the pub nextdoor was the highlight, and boozing upstairs at Games Laboratory afterparty wasn't bad. I went to Anime Expo in 2019 and 2022; first time was just to see what it was like, the second was cause my group of friends all planned on going and convinced me to tag along. Haven’t gone since ‘22 cause I don’t find it interesting or fun (it’s mainly having to wade through crowds and long lines that tuned me off to it).
It’s nice going with friends and commenting on what we see but for me spending $80+ just to walk around without wanting to see or do anything in particular seems pointless.

I skipped the last year, but I usually go to Pax West every year. Went to ECCC and Sakuracon this year as well. I really like going to panels, so it's hit or miss depending on who shows up each year. I had a blast 3 years ago when there was a Dwarf Fortress panel that Toady One was at.

It's best to just talk to them like you're talking to someone about a job, ask them stuff like how a scene was done, if a character role bled into something else or if there was something mentioned in the special features you wanted to elaborate on.

I feel like conventions before 2015/2016 were the real deal. It felt like the people at the conventions were more genuine with their otaku/nerd status and just had as much fun as they could in a weekend, weird costumes, celebrity appearances, fun activities and of course, fucking. Making friends there is impossible since most people already go in groups, the merch is horribly overpriced and the only people at game booths are either sweats or literal children. But i will admit that cosplaying and getting asked for pictures was pretty fun
