I liked playing the NES card style RPGs. Theres also Legend of the Super Saiyan on SNES which plays similarly. Play them with translation patches.

If you don't mind fanfic tier stuff DB Heroes World Mission is a neat card game that uses Budokai-Tier graphics for fight simulations.

A friend of mine really enjoys the DBD clone known as The Breakers. The moba coming out in the future looks decent too.

Not long enough to develop the characters which were pretty decent (though I read the original run was for 12 episodes and that they expanded it). Some of the baffling direction decisions likely resulted due to that.

Also some of the retcons just make no sense but I really enjoyed some of the characters like Majin Duu and Majin Kuu.

The Earth Realm isn't that developed within the scale of Dragon Ball. We get location names but there's no clear map outside of estimations in some of the games

Also some of the implications of locations in story are that many characters live so far apart that it takes many minutes to hours to fly to each location so that's why they rarely visit eachother.

Dragon Ball is not all bad, but there's a lot of Dr. Slump-type shit in it that is kinda stupid and annoying, DBZ does away with most if not all of that and just delivers a more grounded shonen story.
GT is weird because it starts out very DB but the longer it goes on the more it begins to ressemble DBZ, particularly once the roadtrip retardation stops and Baby gets to Earth.
Super meanwhile goes all in on the DBZ train and embodies the worst aspects of it, like how episodic it was and how the arcs just happen without any logical progression and they're just an excuse to give Goku another powerup.
Daima's very concept was so shit they didn't even bother funding a full series of hundreds of episodes.

Demon Realm was wasted. I'm not asking for straight up Deviantart here but the demons were bland and the locations were just a bit quirky, I've seen Toriyama's designs for demons and wizards in Dragon Quest and it's a shame he didn't use more of that energy here

Goku and Vegeta still mog most threats, no stakes for most episodes

Panzy is Bulma 2.0, which is made worse by Bulma joining the group after a few episodes

Glorico is a joke of a character that's ready to drop everything for Goku in the last episodes when Goku can't even get his name right

Neva is an annoying plot device

Degesu does nothing, feels like a dumb attempt at getting the Zamasu crowd

conflict with Gomah feels half baked, he triggers the plot for no reason, and when he gets the eye he's just chimping out for no reason

In the end it feels like a huge waste of time and animation. Should have just been a movie or at least have half the length.

Dragon Ball was kino back in the day. The real problem is a significant amount of Millenials/Gen z can't handle it because it's actually paced well, has a lot of gags, and is more comedic and light hearted. They only want aura farming battle shonen.

Gohan was actually the most popular character in DBZ from the end of the Cell Saga until he jobbed against Dabura according to JUMP polls. He had successfully inherited the protagonist role that had been set up since his introduction, the issue was Toriyama thought he was too boring to write.

go watch the Red Ribbon saga and then talk about pacing. It's dragged out like Namek but with none of the stakes or intrigue. the whole cave arc goes on for a century. Murasaki spends two entire episodes fucking around with Goku pulling pranks on him.

I know some of the audience wasn't receptive towards it, but I always felt Toriyama should have leaned into the Saiyaman shit more with Gohan's personality. Even when out of costume. Gohan being a Superman clone always felt like the next logical step beyond Goku being a Sun Wukong clone. Fucking loved the most recent movie because of that focus.

Man, I must just really be getting old. I am watching the Red Ribbom arc right now and enjoying the hell out of it. DBZ isn't bad, but it misses the flavor and soul of the early dragon ball arcs. Android 8 was always one of my favorite characters.

Gohan is very introspective and self-sacrificing in a way his father isn't, he constantly assumes blame and responsibility for things beyond his control as is common with more introspective males. It also leads to him thinking he has a duty to save and protect people, because he has the power to do it. a direct contrast to his father, who is a hero only by circumstance. Goku doesn't go chasing costumed villains all day because he believes that he could never stop them all no matter how hard he tries, and he would only destroy himself if he did. Goku is a very Cincinnatus-type person.

Of course, DBZ isn't meant to be a deeply philosophical story so I get why Toriyama didn't take it that way.
