I've only played through the "prologue" of the game, and I'm on day 50 of my second playthrough, and honestly, I'm terribly bored.
The tactical gameplay is super tedious and repetitive, gathering resources and walking around the map is basically a fucking monopoly, and the plot is terribly drawn out.
The fact that someone announce to tell you something that finally has some some plot significance and then he dies/disappears/forgets about it is fucking annoying, you literally have to sit through 50 hours of grinding and dull slice of life chitchat to to learn anything significant about the world.
the fact that you can later speak the invaders language but decide to keep killing them instead of asking them why they call you invaders is also hyper annoying
Once I finish my current run I'll probably uninstall it and wait for some autist to upload a YT video with the lore explanation, because there is no way in hell I'm wasting even more time on this shit show.
When i play this game it reminds me of pic real. Truth is slightly stretched since in reality VN usually are long but they are not as tedious and they are not blue balling you with lore like HND.

Man some of these routes "bad endings" just highly depend on the characters being driven to the stupidity, huh?

I don't see what makes it good desu. Even before potions, it's trivial to wipe the map in a couple turns, sometimes 1 turn, because of how AP economy works. If you get a bruiser like Eito, Hiruko, or Jumonji - and then stack some attack boosts on them - it just creates this ridiculous rollaway juggernaut momentum when you prioritize the +1 AP enemies, and start adding in the voltage ultimate attacks, etc. Everything is just ramps up way too rapidly and the game is not built to handle it. It's generally a bad idea to have these Galeforce / Raging Storm (to borrow from FE) type self-refresh mechanics in a tactics game, unless you VERY carefully balance it.
I do still enjoy the gameplay in a brainless kind of way, it's kinda fun to see how far you can push things, but if you want a good version of this that is still very breakable in the latter stages of progression, play Metal Slug Tactics.

I truly hope it gets better in other routes since I'm still on the introductory one but at this point I just want it to be over. There's nothing satisfying about this. I was kind of excited when one of the commanders (early spoilers) took off her helmet and they captured her (how the fuck no one thought about taking their mask off before that is just baffling), only for it to lead nowhere. Everyone also completely forgets about Hiruko after a few days. Now they're worrying about Ima but I bet after these next few free time days pass, something else will happen and they will completely forget about him too apart from Kako.

For around 80% of the game i feel like in Danganronpa investigation and trial part of chapter 1. Every player knows its Leon name on the wall but waiting for the character to get to that point is so frustrating and this happens to most events in Hundred Line Defense. The most frustrating was literally nobody giving a shit about who are the invaders and why the fuck nobody questions why some tiny robot AI's are the commanders calling the shots and not actual human leaders

Battles are still easy on any playthrough. The worst thing is that they are part of the "story" so you can't skip them as events are happening in the middle or in between waves

The only way to make battles challenging is if you don't upgrade any skill, trap and potion for the first 100 days

If you're like me and you place yourself on the killing game route fairly early, you're stuck in constant battles with nearly no free time to ever upgrade your weapons and no commander absorptions to upgrade your voltage attacks.

To be painfully fair, I've seen a lot of streamers who suck at games/strategy struggle immensely with the first few battles. This game needs to allow for a playerbase of VN-onlies.
They could have added difficulty modes. They probably could have added a mode which is the exact same but your characters/defense node have like, 60% less HP. I think trying to limit the defense node damage to 10-15HP per battle is a pretty solid challenge.

combat was done by the valkyria chronicles devs, you don't want what they consider more challenging. Their default game design heavily favors dumping all your AP on 1 or 2 units and having them do everything, that's obviously happening here. They spice things up via

if you rush the base it moves onto the next "wave" where new bases spawn, new enemies and potentially a boss spawn so whoever rushed the base might be horribly out of position and have to survive the enemy dumping their AP on them

bosses that 1 shot you if you're moving within their sight so you have to disable their attack from long range but you can only damage their health with short range units

enemies that can only be damaged by specialized units such as tank vs anti-tank or just spending extra AP to make every unit anti-tank

We're better off having the one turn puzzles in 100 line so we can move on with the VN content. If you want to see what the AP dump devs have to offer VC4 is usually cheap otherwise idk go play x-com or into the breach

Ya, if they gonna do combat in a game like this I would expect some sort of secret of Easter eggs you can do especially on alternative runs where you know something will happen after the battle, like if you beat certain enemy at the edge of the map under 3 turns you can avoid a character's death or something. but no, all battle is just time sink with no other purpose but to drag the game even longer than it should be.

Just finished Slasher. At first I was pissed I got the stupid zombie route first because it felt pointless but then I felt better after seeing that the real slasher route did seem to happen canonically after. Really tempted to do a re read because it’s pretty cute how terrified Hiruko is of being alone with Takumi. Early in most routes she’s always boasting about her strength so it must’ve been pretty humbling to get taken out instantly from not even a surprise attack, he chased her ass down into a dead end and she didn’t even fight back. He must’ve seemed especially unhinged when he got up and jumped through the window with the person that saved her. Seems a little shitty though that she just sat back and let Takumi massacre everyone, I already forget what excuse she said at the end as to why she just let it happen. I also feel bad for all the victims, I bet they were all heartbroken being betrayed by Takumi. Thinking about Kurara especially hurts my heart.

Yes it was refreshing seeing gameplay in Danganronpa and 999 but those were shorter games with healthy amount of breaks between gameplay. As a big fan of every Danganronpa and Zero Escape Games and entire Infinity saga and even Stein Gate/Chaos Head universe i can barely finish a second playthrough. It's a real shame. Something like base capture & deploying from bases could have made the movement speed difference between the students more meaningful. It almost feels like to me like part of Tsubasa's support was to transport other students but it got simplified into just giving them stat bonuses. Despite all it's problems VC4 still had some stuff that felt a little clever like not deploying your slow units until you capture a forward base and then deploying them from there so they could deal with some nearby tanks or something.

100 line could still be way worse to play. I think simplifying it works here. Imagine if students had hit rate for attacks that only improves via leveling the attacks. My entire strategy is just MC spamming ultimate which only get stronger after first playthrough

ima and kako are underrated imo. the first thing i do in any battle is have kako chug a desperation potion and ima gets +2 attack for the rest of the wave. that makes him stronger and have longer reach than takemaru without spending any ap. using kako's special is another easy 100% gauge

Kako can hit for 4 with her move that she can’t move with and its range is pretty great upgraded, good for a free hit on a 4hp enemy. Ima can also delay his side of the map by shoving them back and lowering their movement and then hit for 4 when needed via atk boost and potion. Never touch shouma or kurara though unless the generator needs healing fuck those 2 lol. Eito is cracked though

he is in A because... he gets good 100 hours in by the point when you've already done most fights and thus can skip them.

Gameplay might have been more challenging if every character had separate ap points for action and movement like XCom games. In some battles i literally didn't use anyone from 14 characters beside one with highest damage output and with speed potion

I sat and listened until I realised he wasn't going to stop. It was pretty funny. He's got a villain monologue while one guy bursts his goon squad. It would have been really cool if the combat wasn't silly.

One thing i'm missing is the FPS exploration in this game and exploring new locations. Danganronpa had a nice balance between phases of gameplay as to not make any of them drag too long and to always keep forward to a new chapter. This game is like having the trial part for far too long and too often while story and "new thing explored" parts being very short

Tsubasa becomes extremely broken when you max out her deadlights. Most notable is that she doesn't have exhaustion, so you don't need to spam potions to keep her moving. Not only that she has 2 base damage 6 tile attack. Stacking basic buffs on her bumps that up to 7 per attack. Ontop of deadlights having insane move she can easily solo the entire map without expending any mobility items.

I was kinda shocked by the Cult of Takumi route. It started off seeming like another joke route but as it goes on it starts getting more and more serious and then it's just batshit by the end. The shift in tone was surprising. The endings either being Nozomi getting slowly beaten to death and then Takumi getting turned into a vegetable that they worship or Nozomi getting brainwashed and Takumi choosing to become Supreme Overlord of both races was really unexpected. Moral of the story is to not take weird drugs and that Takumi is a retard for trusting Eito a second time

I messed up during either the clone fight, or the hallucination fight, and let a bunch of minions hit the base during the prologue and ended up with a C. The rankings are all tied to defense percent and turn count. You're more likely to see a lower ranking if the base health bar turns yellow or red.

You have a 999/VLR flow chart you can use to hop between routes. Depending on the writing team behind the route, it could range from an hour and a half to 4 hours. There's around 20 or so routes with each of them having around 5 or so endings.

You suppose to taunt enemies and get attacked. Shouma gets +1 attack for each hit he takes on the next turn. And since he takes 2x2 fields he can get 8+ from distance damage which can wipe out an entire map with his ultimate

He's a decent unit with nice range and an easy +2 damage ability ontop of having bleed. I'd not put him on par with the others in that tier, but definitely about those on the tier below him.

He is a defender mostly, but his punch still deal a lot of damage if he gets attacked a lot in a turn prior

It's not easy to status enemies. Because the inevitable question arises...why are you statusing enemies, instead of killing enemies? It's the debuff paradox. Seen in Fire Emblem and similar games as well.

it's not a bad strategy but honestly desperation potions are best saved for boss melting and the fact that after every wave all charcters are healed means that your strategy requires to waste a desperation potion on each wave for ima to be usable. The only time I could see this strategy being a viable strategy is on the last wave of a battle in which kako and ima are both on the side where the boss is, any other time you are better off using desperation potions on other characters.

my problem with this game is that the branching routes don't contribute much of anything to the main plot

eg. in zero escape every route in the timeline gives a nugget of information that helps build up to the greater mystery

there's no central pillar, the game doesn't feel like it was designed with 100 endings in mind. It's like they had the idea 1/4 of the way though development but didn't want to scrap everything they already had.

Honestly, the original timeline and coming of age route were good, but now I am rapidly getting SICK of this game. The characters are so stupid and so quick to let things drop without even worrying about it...and still so many unanswered questions! I wish the player had more agency OR they cut the fat on how many routes there were and just made a few that were consistently interesting...I loved the first 20-30 hours but it's getting tiresome. What routes ACTUALLY advance the players understanding of the lore/world/scenario? I don't want to step another 5-10 hours on a route which is totally uninteresting...

The one note character tropes in danganronpa was endearing because the killing game would give them some resemblance of character development, but I'm not seeing that anywhere here. I'm already at day 50 and the characters are all pretty much the same. Awful.

Well if you want a slightly spoiler explanation so I think Takumi first starts to understand after absorbing final boss lady Vexhness however you spell it. Turns out the prisoner is her sister so I can kind of see a justification there slightly. Plus everyone got a cryptoglobin boost from going back in time even the enemies from Takumi absorbing world ending levels of power so I think that also helps on their end understanding the main cast too

They gained enough extra power to learn the language which is already established to require a lot of blood to achieve and the whole cast gets it even though in-game their abilities are exactly matched to what they had at the end of the intial loop

People who hate what localizers are doing don't hate them for replacing japanese references with western references or japanese jokes with english jokes, these have to be replaced because japanese jokes/wordplay do not translate over to english and people playing the game wouldn't get japanese references. People take issue with localizers censoring and rewriting dialogue they personally deem problematic and adding memes and slang like what was done with this game's localization.

the dialogue seems a lot lewder compared to danganronpa which was already pretty lewd, hope future games keep this up.

You can't just flatly buff enemies across the board because it inevitably just fucks up everything. The game was simultaneously balanced in a careful way, and carelessly too. And that's just what the game is, warts and all. It's an ecosystem, that can be quickly overrun by a single invasive species. But just like in real life, you can't "fix" the invasive species by giving everything else in the environment steroids. Then you get a game that is needlessly tedious and the differences between the best and worst characters are exacerbated.

Started a company by asking all his friends to come work for him which means he can't in good conscious pay them much lower than they got working for a big studio like spike/chunsoft. Then most of their games have only gotten ok sales.

How hard is it to mod this engine?

The combat system would need a complete overhaul. There's literally nothing going on besides reduce HP to 0. Even if % hit chance is annoying in other games its basically from cover bonuses so it's a way to make positioning matter a bit. Positioning only matters for whether you're in range for an attack or not which is way too shallow. We don't even have something basic like flanking bonuses. I can guarantee you there were some earlier builds that offered some more complex interactions but all that shit got axed.

Stuff like pushing, Kurara's entire kit, the fact that you can rotate your character for actions like defend or dash, etc all imply combat used to have more going on but it all got axed for some reason.

I'm on my second playthrough (first one that let me make decisions) and I'm confused. I alredy learned the secret of Sirei and Academy's purpose. Did I actually gotten into true ending by sheer luck or every route reach the main plotline?

Sure, try it. But there's a lot I can tell you from pure inference. The game is built around this central concept of building up action economy by killing AP piñatas + using AP-free buffing consumables + and building up ultimate meter (voltage/desperation) in order to cut through the sheer waves of enemy fodder.
Now take a common piñata like the little purple dorks with 4 HP. Several characters like Eito, Takumi, and Hiruko have a realistic way of outright ganking these little shits. Now double their HP, to 8. No one kills them easily now. Good job, you created the opposite problem, and made a boring strategy minigame even more unfun.

As far as I know there’s not too much actual sex but more romance, I believe the cult route starts if you choose to sacrifice Takemaru instead of Kyoshika. And if you choose to sacrifice Tsubasa she chickens out apparently and Vexhness takes over the school then you can romance her. Oh and the Eva route from not letting Shouma kill her. There’s a romance route that centers on Kurara, Tsubasa, and Kyoshika fighting over Takumi that splits off from the SF route. (Don’t tell the team you’re from the past). Then there’s the Darumi route if you sacrifice the other academy so she doesn’t get got by Vexhness. If you want to do killing game blind stop reading but that also ends up as a Tsubasa romance.

You must be missing all the quick ones, for example, rather than a bunch of branches that split into full endings, the mystery route has a bunch of early ends, which make up like 7 quick endings.

That feels a bit extreme to me thus far? Maybe I need to get SF to see the depths of it but I did think the end was cute but that felt more like built up off him beating himself up the whole route and feeling miserable and all the times she comforted him. She was terrified of him for a good chunk of it but it seems that then turned into affection after long enough of comforting him. It didn’t come across to me that she was in love with him for most of it. I also remembered after I wrote that that it was because she kept trying to find a way to save him and only after everyone was dead did she come to the conclusion there was no way to save him

IIRC it's called that because it reveals the truth behind everything, not because it's meant to be the "final" ending.
But that sounds like cope since they clearly put a ton of production value into it compared to most other routes.

Overall just solid. He can attack wide - far - and has usually the strongest ultimate which catches a lot.

Nozumi

Kinda meh until you realize she can un-stun units which makes her S tier for that alone - buffs are decent

Tsubasa

Buffed can catch a lot and benefits from being in a fucking car. No stamina potions needed her - Also S

Gaku

Catches a lot of shit and buffed up easily gets you AP - Deserved S

Takemaru

He is alright - Ultimate is very situational but his normal attacks usually can clean up a lot

Eito

Very strong but also not available for half the game so yeah - not quite S tier for that alone

Kyoshika

Should be S tier - she can attack from any direction and with that easily avoid boss counters - all while doing a shitton of damage - just buff her up and she can solo most final stages

Yugamu

Definition of okay - his debuffs can be neat if you got no retarded ninja samurai on the field but outside of that he can be ignored

Hiruko

Would put her higher. She can get a shitload of damage easily - most sleep on her cause she is missing for most of the initial route.

Moko

She sucks period. Might have high damage but so does Hiruko without stun demerit.

Darumi

Useful because she is one of the best generations - with some minor investment a single attack nets you 30%+ easily which feeds S tiers like Takumi

Shouma

Yeah he sucks, Only good for his attraction which only suckers use

Kurara

Had uses in the early game with those support towers being kinda decent - fell off hard later

Kako

Only really used for desperation potion Ima buffing or to kill that one backline enemy for free

Ima

Needs his sister buff to be decent - attack range is kinda whatever - But with the sister buff there is definitely some use here and there.

Kako's biggest issue is the combination of a -3 attack penalty after 1 move ontop of needing to stand still to get her damage. If she had just 1 of these drawbacks she'd have some niche use, but having both just makes her near unusable.

Nozumi is S tier also because she makes explorations free
Being the games main healer is the only reliable way you can unlimited heal in explores.

To be fair it’s pretty easy in this game to get the “true” route, pretty much every time someone tells Takumi he should do something before a decision comes up that’s the thing that keeps you on the main path.

Kako gets significantly better with spring traps and panaceas as the former dont count as her moving and the latter remove her selfdebuff,

if takumi is not s tier already, he should be just from the buff that gives him +1 attack for each dead ally. bosses start in front of him, and you can just expend whatever you need to take it down in a single turn with little regard to tactics

I think Kako is THE definition of mid tier she can pretty much be used in just about every round for a free pick off then forgotten.
