Expedition 33 is a well made, sincere and complete-on-release game. However pretty it may be, it having any staying power in gamers' minds after a month or so from now remains to be seen. It probably will not affect anything on the industry side of things, and will be looked back on with "I remember that, it was pretty good." Meanwhile Japan (and indies) will continue making one thousand dungeon crawlers, one hundred mid-budget RPGs among which many are turn based, and a bunch of hybrid action RPGs like they have been doing for decades.
BG3 was allowed to linger because of its development model and memes, practically forcing itself into discourse for years. It is objectively nothing special (among the relatively small number of CRPGs, it's doing nothing new outside of being a bit more polished with a refined version of Original Sin's gameplay) and sure enough, it too has been fading from the public eye as it neared its final updates. The only people still bringing it up are the fujos and journos who love it for the gay bear sex.

I mean he's sorta right. both are pretty par for the course for the genre as a whole while having high production value but they came at a time when big publishers said no one wanted these things.

I can see the comparison but 33 is quite a unique case.

1. Most modern Japanese studios would not be able to create a game anything like this, When was the last time there was a semi big budget jrpg made that had a decent story along with tons of uniquely animated cutscenes? No don't say Metaphor because that game was budget jank that was only carried by Atlus and Persona fans which are a bunch of tourists when it comes to JRPGs. Even Metaphor was rejected and beaten by Astrobot which is a childish platformer that we've already seen hundreds of times since the 90s.

2. The mainstream western gaming audience still has a weird aversion when it comes to JRPGs especially when they are turn based. This is why Squenix has been trying so hard to distance itself from its past and avoid turn based with Final Fantasy while trying to make the games appeal to western audiences as much as possible. 16 was 100% inspired by game of thrones and the script was made in English first.

3. I have a feeling that if 33 was made by a 100% Japanese team it would not get the same praise. A lot of this games bandwagoning is due to it being an "under dog" release in the sea of AAA western slop being sent out to die lately.

33 is genuinely a good game and it deserves the praise but it should also be a wakeup call for Japanese developers to actually care about making these types of games again.
