It's very unique in terms of gameplay ideas and the vibe, not all of it worked, in fact most of it did not, but it's an unusual kind of game
It was the definitive “Blockbuster rental” type of game, one that a lot of kids and nostalgic boomers tried because of the cover art, got intrigued by because of the interesting premise and control style, and then possibly had the crazy alien shit imprinted on their brains until the day came they would make hour-long youtube essays on it.

The Dreamcast/PS2 game was more of a soft-reboot than it was a true sequel. Ecco Jr. was a game for young kids that didn't touch on the story of the other two games.
Given that he's remastering the first two Genesis games first, I assume he's calling it Ecco 3 because it'll be a 2D game like the Genesis ones instead of 3D like the Dreamcast/PS2 one.

I believe the Ecco creator retained the rights to Dolphin Quest, and was trying to get it developed for other systems after the Amico project fell apart at Tommy's hands. Maybe he and Sega are reworking it into an actual game, ala that Breakout game Atari put out recently.

The Genesis and Mega Drive Collection? My assumption is either because they want to sell a new collection or they want people to sign up for a subscription service they keep teasing. The emulation in that collection wasn't great but I liked that they gave you the uncompressed roms and that the entire genesis library was accessible from the steam workshop.
