Because he's a perfectionist that runs his mouth non-stop about other people's games. On some level I'm sure even he's aware, he's talked shit about a lot of games, including indie games made by smaller teams. If he's going to do that he needs to release something better. He can't make the "mistakes" he's always pointing out in other people's work. The reality of this though is that it causes him to place a very high amount of pressure on himself. This pressure ends up causing him to feel like nothing he makes is good enough to release. This is extremely common in people that place expectations that are too high on the whole world, the often place those same unrealistic expectations on themselves. But rather than crack under those unrealistic, self-imposed expectations and come to the conclusion that he needs to change his perception, he instead hides his work and engages in metaphorical self-flagellation. When he had his little freak out one month where he refunded a bunch of Patreon donations even though he needed the money is a perfect example of this "self-flagellation". The issue is this doesn't actually fix anything. Beating yourself up emotionally for your failures (and his case his perceived failures, games he hasn't even released but feel are failures) actually just makes it harder to fix yourself and for some people is basically an "easy" out because fixing themselves is something they've already failed at so many times.

It's kind of sad how the happiest and liveliest the three of them have sounded in years was when they came back to the channel for a bit. With almost everything before and after that, they just sound exhausted and bored.
Yeah that's pretty much my point. A simple way to solve it though is to just stop doing that and don't care if people try to call you out because humans are allowed to grow and change their opinions.
Maybe I'm just projecting but I feel like I see so much of who I was when I was younger in him. I used to cancel tabletop sessions I spent hours writing material for because I was embarrassed by the material and didn't want to show it to anyone. I had no reason to think that. Most people tell me I'm the best GM they've ever had and they love I write all my own material. It took years of me reminding myself that to finally stop being so hard on myself for my work. And that way years of work on myself after accepting the reality I had an issue with high expectations on myself. I'm not sure he even recognizes he has this issue.

Kojima is a retarded writer but trying to pretend that he isn't extremely creative when it comes to designing games is ridiculous. To me that's a really good example how he should try to be more nuanced in he criticisms of games. Like even though its technically not true that he made the first stealth game, he absolutely made the first really successful one. Trying to deny his impact his wild.
