It's the late stage of the consolidated Western AAA model that's been consuming the industry for over a decade and a half since it caught the "we want the Call of Duty audience" sickness. GTA5 and GTA6's sales spread out could've literally made hundreds of other games profitable, but the people that used to buy those games just want to play GTA and annual shooters/sports now. It's pretty much what the MCU did to movies, and The Walking Dead and Game of Thrones to TV. High water marks for a few hyped up juggernauts while the mean regresses to levels not seen since before the boom.

Indies really think they'd get those sales if it wasn't for that darn GTA VI. This is like the same logic as people on kickstarter for the reasons why their indie comic funding failed. No, they wouldn't have bought your game regardless. The success and failure of an indie game depends on marketing and a little bit of luck like being played by a big streamer. Some will succeed and most will just have to live with decent or terrible sales. that's how the market is when it's oversaturated. Only the cream of the crop will rise to the top and whatever FOTM game is popular that day.

It's kind of true. A lot of people buy games and play them for like an hour, because they like the idea of playing the game/telling people they played it. But when another game comes out that they would rather tell people they played, they skip the original game they were going to buy and not play.
It doesn't change how many people are playing the indie game, but it does cut into their sales a little bit.
