Why did it take almost half a century of RPG development for someone to realize that you could make the game awesome simply by letting the player's skill decide how much damage they take, if any?

Super Mario RPG did this like 30 years ago. And then like 8 years later Mario & Luigi further enhanced it by making it so you can dodge everything instead of just decreasing damage.

Paper Mario TTYD came out in 2004

I'm tired of these falseflag threads.
People like the game. Get over it. It will come to Switch 2 soon, the devs even said so.

Neither of those count because they're babby tier shovelware and not "serious" role playing games.

i think kingdom hearts 2 critical mode is a far more elegant solution

Yeah but mario n luigi fucking sucks in everything else.

Not turn based.

you got BTFOd FP. You cant just say "no"

stats have no superseding say in gameplay

Not worth anyone’s time

yup plays better, looks better, and it makes more sense narratively. (why are people just standing around in turn base games, eh?)

if you're bad at it you can still play on easy mode

Because that's no longer an RPG. It solved a "problem" that's supposed to be a mechanic unto itself.

OK? Less skilled players can engage with the "problem" if they can't handle the skill. The rest of us get rewarded with skipping the boring ass excel menu garbage. It's a win-win.

this is pretty much what any jrpg does tho, all the way back to the 90s
if anything in modern ones it's actually obnoxious to the point it's hard to NOT be overleveled as fuck if you know what you're doing and don't run from literally every single encounter

Deus Ex does that

Parry and dodge are pretty lame, enemy attacks should do damage to you.

i can win any matchup on skill alone

go ahead and fight that big sea monster as soon as you can touch it

b-b-but you totally could beat it if you could consistently parry for 3 days straight

yay parry autism has finally made it into 4 niggers in a row games.

Chess isn't outdated because speed chess exists.

Thinking and tactics isn't a skill

Yeah, I agree OP.
I think chess should also be improved by adding quick time events whenever you're about to lose a piece so you can prevent it.

Unironically, what would be wrong with being able to dodge or parry a capture? It would evolve the game and bring in new players who never would have considered chess before.

You can parry to win in Dark Souls

b-b-but that's not a JRPG!

You kill God at the end and you can parry him too, JRPG.

turn-based RPG

skill

lmao. Pressing a button once in a while to show you're still awake is a challenge to zoomers now

There are almost zero turn based rpgs that involve any kind of brain activity for tactics and skill, and even then e33 still has that it just also has a reaction minigame where you can take an active role in your own defense instead of sitting there and eating ass.

nobody thought people would like a game that lets you bypass all gameplay with QTE sequences, but here we are.

paper mario already added mechanical skill to turn based combat. Ask why it took so long for other games to copy

Why are Nintendo freaks like this

Go make millions off chess is turn based is so easy.

have to press buttons to make things happen

damn video games are dead bros

you can use skill to overcome harder challenges your character is underleveled for

all ARPGs should be like this. Level scaling and power creep is just bad game design when you combine RPG with action mechanics. I never thought a fucking turn based RPG would be what made people see how good that is

You mean actually play video games and not just AAA slop?

Good thing it's not an RPG zoom-zoom

You mean 30 years ago in Super Mario RPG?

A turn-based RPG made people realize how good action rpgs are

Not exactly new

The only turn-based game these motherfucker played are Pokemon and Final Fantasy, that's it. Forcing them to play an actual 90s RPG would mind break them harder than an eroge.

If I wanted to be tested on my reaction skills, I would play an action game. I play a turn based rpg because I want to be tested on my ability to manage stats and skills and think strategically. This is just homogenizing genres, why does everything need to play the same way?

Literally the same shit

I-It doesn't count becuz they not french!

I thought cat posters were supposed to be smart?
Rpgshit ruins action games. No action rpg has better combat than even the shittest action game.

that lets you bypass all gameplay

Legitimately what do you mean by this? Please explain in full detail

Many rpgs can be solved using low level strategies if you learn how to break the game. E33 is fixing something that isn't broken and creating a false narrative among ignorant fans who don't play rpgs.
If you can use action to solve the game while ignoring the strategic elements, then you're playing an action game not an rpg. Rpgs are strategic/tactical games.
Sandfall made something neat and different, but it can't by nature influence the genre because by definition it falls outside of the genre into its own niche.

Selecting the optimal option? Like in a TRPG where should you move, and what attack should you use can't be overriden by playing a rhythm minigame for 10 seconds to just nuke an opponent on the other side of the map.

Man, remember Legend of Dragoon?

could we not have this thread again

Dragoon's qtes don't approach the level of action elements in e33. Importantly, there are zero defensive qtes or any action elements whatsoever that allow you to mitigate damage. These games are worlds apart.

The two Yakuza JRPGs let you guard in time to reduce damage and has action commands for a lot of the special attacks and abilities.

OK? But I don't care about Japanese anime games, I want something real and substantial. COE33 is the first JRPG that I'm aware of that answers this.

If you actually played RPGs you would know these mechanics have been in them for 30 years. Also E33 lets you build your characters in a way that you can just ignore parrying anyway. You're a whiny faggot who doesn't play video games.

Parrying in E33 is unprecedented in the genre. The enemies perform long combo attacks that are unlike anything in a JRPG to date - unless you count Souls as JRPGs, since that's what these enemy attacks are: Carefully designed action choreography that must be reacted to and/or memorized in order to dodge or parry it. It is more similar to Fromsoft circa 2014-2021 than any of these purported turn-based influences.

In Mario RPG an enemy predictably runs up to you once and you go *boop* and block some of the damage. Comparing it to this is retarded, although in fairness you could also be lying, ignorant, or playing dumb.

So I was right, this game really is just M&LSS with realistic graphics

Why not just play a crpg in that case? Those definitely have more substance than some japfrench game if you ignore bioware and anything inspired by bioware

Animation, press button

Animation, press button

Legit the exact same shit

This is why Super Mario RPG will always be the GOAT.

Legit the exact same shit

Is like saying walking 1 step is the same thing as sprinting 40 yards. You're just moving your legs and propelling yourself forward, bro!

Because trying to fuse turn-based and action is one of the worst things you can do. It results in the worst of both worlds with the strength of neither. It completely undermines the tactical elements and pacing of the turn-based side of things.

Plus it just makes the action part slow as fuck since it has turn based tied to it

That game is not called Super Mario RPG and didn't come out 30 years ago. Fair enough, but that video says it's the final boss and still looks like baby shit compared to the Souls-influenced gameplay in E33.

I'll bite because I'm legit mad.

by letting the player's skill decide how much damage they take, if any?

then why have statistics like dex o con? why have a build? if is it's not the characters skill, but the player's - why build a character at all?
this is so incredibly stupid that I can't even conceive it.

Yeah and now read again:

And then like 8 years later Mario & Luigi further enhanced it by making it so you can dodge everything instead of just decreasing damage.

I'm also seeing that purple boss doing "Carefully designed action choreography that must be reacted to and/or memorized in order to dodge or parry it".

because that defeats the entire point of an rpg? an rpg is about your characters skills not yours. if you want an action game just play one i dont know why retards want rpgs to cater to action players all the time when there are already hundreds of action games you can just play instead.

In a real rpg it's the characters skill that should matter not the players.

You press a button to either avoid taking damage or reduce it. They'll always be the same shit to actionchads

Subhuman chimps can't process the notion of using build strategy and mid-battle tactics to defeat enemies while underleveled, therefore adding a rhythm game "Negate All Damage" button is the only solution they can accept for defeating enemies while underleveled

Is this the only reason why every retard and their mother is saying this game "solved" Turn-Based RPGs?

Why are from niggers so mentally unwell and insecure?
God damn dude get yourself checked.
Also way to show you know jack dick nothing about Mario RPGs.

Devs stopped aping from them after raping pure action games for years. That's pretty much it

obviously duh anon.
Every turn based game is just 'hurf derf et b branles. just masha da A buttun bruh'.
These faggots can't comprehend a damn thing.

Bravely Default is still the peak of 4 niggas in a row combat

No, because Bravely Second exists.

file.png - 400x240, 107.11K

It’s because none of the chimps can read and the builds scare them.
