How easy would it be to just simply make a game and become a millionaire?

store.epicgames.com/en-US/news/new-epic-games-store-webshops-and-revenue-share-update

0% Store Fee For First $1,000,000 in Revenue Per App Per Year

Starting in June 2025, for any Epic Games Store payments we process, developers will pay a 0% revenue share on their first $1,000,000 in revenue per app per year, and then our regular 88%/12% revenue share when they earn more than that.

How are you gonna convince Steamies to play it on your platform? No one was able to do it before.

How easy it is to put your game on epic?

Tim is a game dev hero

Sure you'll get devs to put their games on both EGS and Steam. But most people are still going to end up buying on Steam.

why and how is the EGS still so bad after all these years and millions invested?

how is it bad? you buy the game and you play the game?

a game they want so bad but the dev's say they will never bring it to steam. easy peasy

is that really worth it when you're guaranteed to sell 95% less copies

Steamies are zealots. Even if your game were GOTY, they genuinely would not buy it. Not like they're lacking in titles. They'd pirate it at most. And if you add Denuvo to stop that, then they have double the excuses to not play it.

if it was any sort of easy a lot of indie devs would've jumped into it already

as far as it looks, Epic is the one that invites you to their store

Timmy loves video games so much he just pulled master server support for all Unreal Tournament games. There are ways of overcoming this hurdle (Openspy,New Community Master Servers,333networks) but the precedent remains. Did Valve yank your ability to play Half Life Death Match and Counter Strike 1.6, CS Source, Team Fortress or anything? do you have to use a workaround to do it?
The people who shill for Epic are literal third world jeets. There's no one on PC who cares about his bullshit. He lost the UT crowd a long time ago.

can you make hentai games on epic game store?

Probably much harder now that you're competing against millions of other devs for exposure, as opposed to back when Super Meat Boy came out.

I'm not installing another fucking store launcher, steam was already pushing the limits of my patience.

pushing his limits

and do tell, do you fanboy gabe the way so many steamies do?

Impossible. Games do not sell on EGS this is a fact indies who have tried have told the world about.

Lethal Company is one of the best games of the decade and it was made by a Roblox Furry in his spare time.
He pulled in like $15mil (after Gabe's 30% cut) odd from it.

How does that benefit me as a consumer?

Simple example:
Go to the store page for any game on Steam and at the bottom you'll see "more like this" and a list of similar games. It helps publishers because they get free advertising off other games, it helps consumers because they can easily find games similar to ones they like, and it helps Steam sell more games. It's win-win-win for everyone. The Apple App Store has this feature. Pretty much every single movie streaming service has this feature. It is a super common and obvious feature, yet Epic lacks it. Steam also does regular events and themed sales; I don't think Epic does anything similar. Steam is simply the better salesman.
If devs or at least Epic were smart, they'd sell games for less than on Steam.

Sell on Steam for $60.

Steam takes 30%

60 * 0.7 = $42

Sell on Epic for $50

Epic takes 12%

50 * 0.88 = $44

Devs would make slightly more per sale, Epic would get more total sales, and consumers would get games for less. Instead I see Ghost of Tsushima listed for 60 USD on both Steam and Epic.

If I recall correctly you get in trouble with Steam for offering your game at a discount on Epic. You have to give Steam the same price you do anywhere else.

Yes, that is true. The Steamworks policy agreement explicitly states this with pretty big font as well to make sure you notice it.

t. has a published game on steme

I already have to pay EPIC a cut of my sales eventually for using their engine, on top of that I will owe Steam 30% of all my sales. Gonna be worth it though boys I tell you what.

On Steam I share a giant library with 3 other friends, I ain't switching to Epic. Sorry tim.

just put your game on every store
its that easy

Steam is the only one that allows Early Access though. I want that triple release life you must understand. Demo release, early access release, full release, that's three big releases where Steam gives you visibility.

Like what?

If I made a game, I'll sell it on my website. See I'd rather make 5 dollars than 8 dollars and Gabe or Timmy take 2. I think they're both feral fucks and I'd rather lose one dollar than allow any of these parasites anywhere near my business, no matter how small. That and I fucking hate americans.

I already do this with the records I press. I rather pay for and sell 100 white labels than upload shit to Spotify. People have forgotten what controlling your own life and business is about.

tim does early access as well, hell so does xbox. i think snoy is the only ones that truly don't do it.

Oh wait GOG DOES have early access.

If I made a game, I'll sell it on my website

You will have to spend insane money on marketing to pull something like this

I'd rather make 1 dollar than 100,000 dollars.

No you wouldn't.

If I ever make my game into a release state, I will never go to Timmy. I want my game to be played by actual people, not epic bots.

Maybe EPIC can pay you $200,000 to give your game away for free. A deal many indies would gladly accept. At least I imagine that's what's happening with all these giveaways they do.

the money you save will just go to paying a cdn to host it and google to run ads that will never been seen except by people too dumb to use an adblocker and those people only play match 3 mobile shit.

This whole thing is just baffling.

implement every single pro-consumer, pro-developer thing that everybody whines about

no one uses it

Why? Why in God's name would anyone have cultlike allegiance to a fucking store? And the weirdest thing is the people who act like using a different launcher is a hassle when all you're doing is clicking a game icon on your desktop.

You people are so retarded. You deserve $100 games.

based SJW (store justice warrior)

This. Steam is where gamers are. It's almost impossible to put a price tag on that. But there is one, and it's 30% of all your sales

It's not a tax. Gaben is offering free promotion to anyone whose game is selling. More sales = more promotion = more $$$. And you don't have to do anything. Except a game that people want.

30% up to the first million copies then its some shit like a 5% drop for every million after down to 20%.

pro-consumer

Are we talking about egs?

every thread that mentions Sweeney has this anon seething about Unreal Tournament

lol
I admire the persistence though.

I'm not complaining.

This whole thing is just baffling.

>implement every single pro-consumer, pro-developer thing that everybody whines about

In this very thread there is an example of QoL that Steam has and EGS doesn't.

WTF that's super gay and Jewish.

open Epic Games Launcher

CPU fan spins up

That was enough for me to uninstall it.

Because steamies are unironically cucks that have sunk cost fallacy

They care too much about their libraries and profiles and badges and about not wanting to install another store, but it's fine when Valve did it because they got to their balls first

I use both stores. I make a game in unreal engine and sell it on steam.

The absolute bots in this place.

You bots just don't get it. The only way to even make any money with a small investment is a niche product for a niche you understand intimately. To whom you'll be selling tangible copies ordered through your own portal. Along with the mugs, plushies and personally autographed condoms. That way you have control over your income stream, small as it may be. Physical copies and merchandise. Rinse and repeat. Shit, how do you think half the industry in Japan survives?

The problem with the industry is manifold. The chief among them that nobody wants to just be a small business, but instead wants to be an instant viral superstar. Meanwhile the graveyard of forgotten indy games a week into launch on steam grows at an exponential rate. Avoiding Steam and Epic is no different to avoiding Spotify. As time goes on it will become ever more necessary. You think your rights over your work will remain safe and cosy once Gabe kicks the bucket?

Good luck with that.

That only applies to Steam keys afaik, which is fair. You can't sell the Steam version of the game cheaper, bypass Valves cut and still make Valve handle downloading the game and keeping cloud saves. You can sell it for cheaper on another store, pay that stores cut and make that store handle everything.

Piracy is almost always a service problem

If I can't buy a game on the best platform, I'm not going to pay more (because the other platform has less value) for the same on an inferior platform that is using anti-competitive, anti-consumer practises.
If you're acting like a tyrant with no market share, then its pretty telling how you'll act if you become the market leader.

Pretty easy. Just make sure you get lucky and have people shilling for you for free on social media, and have journos get behind your project to hype it up.

Epic is probably the most pro-dev company in existence, and by a massive margin. Lets be honest, 70% of the hate Sweeney and Epic gets is purely because he wants to be a competitor to Steam and "le heckin' based Lord Gaben". There really is a cultural zeitgeist of "Lord Gaben" worship -- it's truly dogmatic. You just do it and don't really question it, you just regurgitate the same shallow reasons without really examining it critically. The other 30% are legitimate grievances, like UE5 still being too demanding + teething issues, the Epic Store client being not that great, even though the Steam client is pretty ugly and a glorified webpage in an uglier and less usable window. It's purely carried by long term familiarity, not because its any good.

Nobody gave a fuck about Hades when it was a timed Epic exclusive, but it became a smash hit instantly when it came on Steam.

That's only if you sell Steam keys on other storefronts. If it's just a copy of the game you can sell it for whatever you'd like, even at like 10% of the steam's price.

pro-consumer

Sweeney bascially said he was targetting devs and not consumers.
EGS's major downfall was when Sweeney bought out Metro Exodus exclusivity off of steam just a week before release. I don't people ever got over it as it solidified peoples hatred for EGS to this day.

Part of the problem is that he went full scumbag too fast instead of slowly being a fucking asshole.

shrug.jpg - 350x277, 17.03K

1. You start making a game
2. Around 2-5 months in depending on your programming skills(or understanding of math logic if youre using blueprints) you finish ALL of the mechanics you want, that work together pretty well
3. You find out that you need to write the plot yourself and you’re probably a shit writer that didn’t write anything larger than a 300 word essay in your life
4. You find out that you should make your own resources and animations and that making a game is 95% of time spend on those rather than the fun parts like writing mechanics
5. You close the ide and open blender
6. You understand that producing even 1 non-shit 3d model of a simplest thing takes months because you have never done 3d modelling and you cant even fucking draw
7. You delete the repo from github and never attempt to make another game again
True story

IMG_4783.jpg - 1024x1024, 154.16K

The thing about Sweeney is that he genuinely believed that every major publisher would jump ship to Epic instantly because of the better cut. Then that did not happen and Sweeney didn't know what to do.

Epic is probably the most pro-dev company in existence

Your complete inability to quantify that speaks volumes. You're simply full of shit.
The dev tools on EGS are fucking worthless. It doesn't even have a CDN.

No, you are wrong. Nobody cares how the game store looks, it is what it provides that actually has a meaning. Steam attaches a forum to every game with discussions/mods/guides/fanart/market/whatever. Steam integrates with multiplayer games so you dont need to look through gorillion of servers and settings when you want to play with your friends - you just click join game. Steam provides good review system. For an end user steam is what makes it worth to purchase game rather than pirate it. The only way EGS is better than steam is that it takes less money from devs than steam does BUT THAT DOES NOT TRANSLATE TO LOWER PRICES FOR BUYERS. 60$ game will cost 60$ both in steam and EGS, so there is exactly 0 reasons to choose the inferior service
