Atari gets into an agreement with Nintendo to release games on the NES
Knows Nintendo has strict quality control guidelines in place to prevent another video game crash due to shovelware
Chip shortage happens, less games are being shipped
Atari wants to use a manufacturuer of chips that are shit
Nintendo refuses
Atari gets mad cause they want more money
Atari steals the lock out chip code from the US copyright office
Atari selling unauthorized games in violation of their agreement
Atari sues Nintendo for anti trust violations
The fact that Atari stole code from Nintendo gets discovered in court and that they use that code to make their unauthorized games
Atari claims FAIR USE, ITS NOT FAIR THAT THEY HAVE LOCKOUT CHIP TECHNOLOGY AND ITS NOT FAIR THAT WE HAVE TO ABIDE BY OUR AGREEMENT WITH THEM AND WE SHOULD BE ABLE TO STEAL!!!!! WE WANT MONEY!!!!! EVIL COMPANY!!!!
Judge rips Atari a new one because stealing is not fair use and if they could reverse engineer the lockout
Atari loses the case
Atari eventually goes bankrupt
Ends up being the case where we find out that ripping things off is not fair use
Will always be a fun case to revisit and should serve as a cautionary tale to what happens when you're a seething hater.
