As much as I would have hated a Garlemald expansion and fucking around with Zenos being treated like some big bad again for that long, The actual Garlemald content we got was pretty much perfect. It told it's story while not overstaying it's welcome. The Garlean soldiers and citizens we were trying to save hated us and generally weren't cooperative but we didn't spend time talking about how person X in their ranks was doing the evilest shit so you never get to that point of second guessing why we're helping them. And the propagandized citizens felt kinda like Japan talking about itself in a way

I think it was only unpopular with dense people. The Lopporits served their purpose of helping take some of the edge off when needed because this story wasn't about getting by crushing despair but fighting against it. Zodiark at 73 was fucking great because going to the moon at all felt like 'the secret endgame zone' like Azys La or the Tempest. And then you get the whole rest of the game and it's a fucking wild experience.

If the story is much the same and a damp rag then people won't return, there are so many good games on the market currently good story games too that FFXIV is looking really old by comparison.

Players don't want to talk about this aspect of long-form games, but it's true. Your attachment to the world and characters is your reason for being in the game.

On a surface level, you would think most players are doing a raid for the raid's sake, for the immediate gameplay and rewards it offers, but that's wrong.
They're doing the raid because it gives an extra sense of purpose to the world. You subconsciously know that after the raid/season is done, the party of the story is waiting on you and the world is growing larger with more things you investigate.

Players, of all games, want to say that's cringeworthy, but it's the reality of it.

I mean this is where XIV is now. Technically no places actually have anything going on that we're aware of, but it's up to the writers to make a half decent plot while we collect Azem relics and they try to string that plot together. Presumably after Dawntrail they'll rethink their approach a bit, but they are still a part of Square Enix so who knows.

XIV's combat and bosses beat all three of those games put together.

The next expansion can't be meracydia ONLY because the current plot since 6.1 is about the shards.

The problem with 8.0 now is, "What was the point of 6.1-6.5 and 7.0?"

It's not cringe at all it's the reality of what FFXIV is to a lot of people and the devs realised that when the story started to get praised so heavily they leaned into that aspect to carve out their own niche in the MMO space.
People weren't going to other places praising the combat, the gameplay, the minigames, the side quests they were going to other games and telling their friends that the story in FFXIV is something worth the effort and time investment yes it has raids and other MMO aspects but that helps fill the time and keep you playing but as you say the attachment to the World and character is the reason for being in the game for many people which was broken in Dawntrail and I'm not sure that attachment can be repaired.

And this is partly why DT 7.0 was such a catastrophe. Sidelining all the characters even despite returning the vast majority of the Scions, while fucking around with Pokemon tier bullshit for the main plot and having a really, really awful writing approach and resolution with incredibly empty, one-dimensional new characters just made so many people fuck off. If Hiroi stays the main writer, all that attachment and the sort of "involvement" so many players had with the game and their Warriors of Light will die out if it hasn't already for large swathes.
Shit man we don't even have to be the central protagonist, no one was crying foul at Alphinaud before. But goddamn did everything shit the bed.

6.x was always a filler story to pass the time. Regardless of opinions about it's quality it's a relatively self contained story that takes care of a plot regarding the void complete with it's own conclusion but still leaves more than enough space to come back to it later and pick things back up for a new story.
7.0 is also filler but it set up the overarching plot element of Azem relics. Adding Sphene to the party might also have been an overall goal. Shards being addressed may or may not be important depending on where they wanna go with it.

It absolutely can be because there's nothing about the current plots that would imply that we HAVE to have shard related content in everything we do. While I do think they'll probably do more with them as part of some eventual goal I also don't think there's anything immediate that says we can't have an entire expansion in a source location that doesn't get mixed up in shard stuff. Of course I'm also not saying they can't or won't do those things, but the shards don't have to be immediately addressed for anything because the next big plot thread is clearly 'Azem'. We just don't know yet if it's Azem relics to facilitate shard shenanigans or if we're gonna explore who Azem was or fucking what.

It's kind of unfathomable just how bad Dawntrail's story was in the first half.

It had to have been some consulting agency's work or something, all the scenes are terrible, all the scenarios are full of plot holes.

The fact that yoship didn't like the "water water froth and foam" cutscene is enough of a tell that he needs to fuck off from videogame development. Yshtola has the first hint of a character trait ever since ARR and he says he didn't like it because it was "unfitting" or some other nonsense. That patch was genuinely the best patch ever since the end of ShB (including endwalker itself), story was hopeful, characters had actual personality.

I'm still that anon that thinks the other two writers were fighting Hiroi all the way through. The amount of times characters mention ideas, concepts and plot threads that then spontaneously disappear afterwards is baffling, and only handfuls of them get resolved in side quests.

At most, they'd do shadowbringers again, but none of the old cast follows you into the new dimension this time.
Basically isekai you out of one fantasy setting into another and then roll with new NPCs, but keeping your character.
The other option would be letting you make a second character for the alternate campaign that's linked with your original character so that it retains progress and unlocks and they keep parity, but there's no fucking way in hell they have the backend setup to support that kind of thing.

I don't disagree some really cool ideas in ARR that have been abandoned for either lack of the dev who made the system and didn't write a design doc mostly it was ad hoc and lack of willingness form Yoshida to devote dev time in reworking and updating those old systems because he says it's far too outdated and the newest expansion is always his focus. Which is strange to me as the first point of contact with the game for new players is still ARR where all those old systems exist and players will play around with first.

Some people would have liked the classic FF experience with you going to another world at the end of the journey, but personally I loved how Endwalker was paced.
The classic FF experience was already there in Shadowbringers, but Endwalker made XIV a wholly unique FF experience and not a retread of older FF games imo.
And with how meta some points of the story was, the writing felt very thematic and didnt feel jarring at all.

They could also do some bigger gameplay changes like fixing the game's overt single-player focus in a new campaign with new rules. There's no way in hell they'd be able to work with nearly doubling the amount of information they have to retain for every character in the game in order to sell the illusion of having a separate one in an alt campaign to switch between.

Now they've done the same with the Story look at the fundamentally story design it's unchanged from Shadowbringers 6 zones the final zone is prior civilisation Amourat in Shadowbringers, Ultima Thule in Endwalker and Forever Lost/ Endless Zone in Dawntrail which represents Alexandria lost. The story beats are all the same we know there will be a dungeon at level 03 of the new expansion and a trial at a certain level a final dungeon at level 09 finished with a trial. It's a story package much like they've turned Dungeons into a package and all in the name of efficency and people might question well what's wrong with that?

Players just run through a dungeon. I personally like Hakukue Manor and Tam Tara and the temple one at 35, those are my favorites.
The reality though is that a path gets formed, and players are expected to run the fastest path.

The game has been streamlined in that aspect, but it's also a case of it already being streamlined by the players, before any hardcoded changes even took effect.

I think players run through a dungeon as fast as possible on repeat because of the daily roulette system which encourages you to do the content as fast as possible rather than explore and take your time, it doesn't reward you for taking your time it rewards you for being as fast as possible.
What I mean by that is the devs could put in more pathways and increase rewards found in the dungeons themselves rather than give a flat reward of Tomes xp and gil on completion.
It's all pointless anyway because Yoshida is on record saying that he made all content into time sensitive packages that is dungeons should take 15-20 minutes to complete, Alliance raids 30-40minutes to complete because they're catering to the salary man in Japan who comes home from work can play for an hour and wants to be efficient with his time so he knows if he touches a dungeon he will be able to complete it in time.

I have the same hopeful thoughts, but here's my rational thought on it: they can't replicate the build up of 10 years of expansions into 8.0.

The problem with Endwalker is that it's a meta-narrative on Covid 19 and whatnot. That fight against Hydaelyn is probably a remnant of the original story to Endwalker.

What I mean with the Covid stuff and the Elpis stuff is that, they probably realised later on that they wanted a more feelgood story ending with her.
The wanted her to encapsulate the spirit of a mother and protector, as she was in 2.0, conceptually.

It's different, because every JRPG has you 'kill God', but yeah I wouldn't say that's the real story of XIV, but that's another whole conversation about Elpis and the bird and so on.

XIV is a fucking hot mess of 1.0, 2.0, and 5.0 change up code, worst in genre Netcode, and the obvious comedy joke for security. This is foundation level stuff that can't be fixed in an expansion and would fuck the game's balance and how everything worked until that point to boot.
Ask yourself this, would you want to que up for a Frontline in 2030 with the 1.5s-2.5s delay bullshit netcode we have now? Because that's what "Another decade of XIV!" is promising.

The story was over, the direction for jobs and how they play is stagnated, every reason for DT's existence would have functioned better in a XIV-2, and the above stuff could at long last be fixed. We're talking about a game programmed so poorly that people whom already suffer from poor ping laying crippled on the ground have the system code run up and kick them in the chest by making their GCDs and oGCDs less responsive unless they run Alexander or Noclippy.

Especially considering all the previous stuff and HW trailer setting up the big hype. You have shots of imprisoned one-armed Raubahn seething, and Lolorito standing around menacingly. Letting the situation stew more would've also tied into the whole expansion's "revenge bad" theme and mirrored Ishgard's situation, or hell, the writers could've even tied them directly together in some manner.

I'm not advocating for it continuing, I'm advocating for SE to get themselves in a better position before they make a successor. Because right now, safe bets would be on a new MMO being as DoA as one of their mobile games while being 50 times as expensive.

Ever since I started playing I've always had a mental divide between the WoL, who is his own thing, and my PC, who is their own character.

Except DT has lost like 600k subs, people did NOT keep playing, nor are they returning.

DT had a gorillion pre-orders like EW, without DT, XIV-2 would have had a gorillion pre-orders because people's expectations had consistently been met over the years. The current stock of people at the end of EW would have picked it up and because it was a new MMO many new people would have as well.

I like that every 14 thread these days is just a reminder to stay unsubbed.

FF14 is an old game and feels it's age as newly released games come out. It'll always have a core audience but as the years progress and the quality has nose dived what else is there?
They spent so much time and development on the graphics update for Dawntrail per a YoshiP interview but it's such a marginal improvement that was it worth it?
The justification being it's to attract a younger audience but by far the best thing they could have done to draw in more players is to have all cutscenes voice acted.
They have the money considering they just spent $5million on paying K4sen JP streamer group and Hololive Vtubers a sponsorship to play the game. If they spent that money instead of it going into streamers who immediately leave the game when the sponsorship is over taking their audience with them, if they spent it on voice acting for all cutscenes and dialogue in what is supposed to be the 'Story' MMO the hype of that alone would have got people to come back and play through the game to experience older parts of it again seeing it all voiced.
But what the fuck do I know? I'm just a player giving my opinion of what I like.
