The combat in ES is serviceable enough. They're more about the totality of the experience of getting lost exploring the world. You can say that I'm coping when I say this, but if this elusive quality was so easy to capture there wouldn't be a single other game from a non Bethesda developer in existence to capture it (New Vegas).

It terms of game feel it's an improvement. Morrowind plays like shit, and while I have no issues with Oblivion, it does feel like you're character always sliding on oil. The exploration is also better. I think going spelunking in a dwemer ruin and ending up in the underdark scratches the adventure itch better than anything in 3 & 4. Except for stuff like that one dungeon in 4 where there's a huge dark chasm and and you suddenly exit out to a plain of Oblivion. I forget the name of it.

I played Skyrim for the first time in 2011 and had a blast. It was my first TES game which I engaged seriously, got filtered by Morrowind as a kid by shitty graphics and dull combat (yes, even by 2002 standards Morrowind character models looked like ass). It felt great for 2 weeks straight, when I was exploring everything, doing every quest I could find, turning every stone but in the end experience turned shallow. I could not find a reason to come back. There were maybe a handful of quests which I wanted to experience again, the world was big but I struggled to find anyone to fight or to interact with, main quest was possibly the biggest slap in the face to anyone who played RPGs back in 2000s, essentially I was making up my own "fun" inside of my head.
