The gameplay for the first 20 hours is running down a series of hallways and the game constantly breaking your party up to prevent you from engaging with the one compelling part of the game, the different combinations you can make for paradigms
The cutscenes look pretty, the world is interesting, and the reason most people are confused while playing is because the game pretty much refuses to do exposition. Characters never go "oh wow it's so weird we live in a mini-dyson sphere orbiting the planet" (that's what cocoon is btw).
Play it if you have time to waste, and if you enjoy the setting you should really play the second game which is actually fun. Seriously 13-2 is great

Battle system requires you to actually think both before combat and actively during combat (including positioning), instead of just looking up the best build online and spamming it through the game.

If you do auto battle every fight will last 5 minutes, biggest filter in the series. You can't even survive last 2 dungeons with auto battle.

Fuck no. In the first few chapters, maybe. But relying on auto battle past that will get you killed a lot. There are puzzle bosses, and even just tough regular enemies that will kill you if you don't engage with the system.

There are auto battle challenge runs on Twitch/YouTube where they had to grind to max crystarium to progress through chapters and still failed to beat the game. Perpetuating this myth just proves you didn't play the game.

The story is atrociously written and presented so you'll be confused out of your mind at all times of the journey, even if you stop for 4 hours to read all the optional entries they give you from the starting menu.
The gameplay is like a watered down version of X but in real time that opens up until you hit the Calm Lands equivalent of this game, which is Grand Pulse, and start doing the extra challenge fights along the way. At that point it actually gets enjoyable as you actually need to think a strategy to beat some of the enemies instead of just spamming whatever element they're weak against, but good God, it takes its sweet time to actually get there.
Overall a 4/10, you miss nothing by not playing it, and you get an interesting game once you get past the I itial 20 hours of hallways with literally nothing in them to even give you the illusion of not being railroaded into them.

I played it through once. In fact it's the only one of that trilogy that I've managed to finish. It was shit, entirely forgettable, and I will likely never play it again. Other than the visuals, it has no redeeming qualities.
