Play Proejct Zomboid

Waiting for mods to catch up. Im not playing this crafting slop without m60 with tracers.

First public release - May 28, 2011

You're telling me that the game is about to hit 14 years old and it's still not "1.0"?

they barely update it and whenever fans get really angry they'll just claim that a burglar stole their source code (which they claimed 3 times already)

also I wanna rape OP goddamn

Girls that look like prostitutes turn me

I'm currently playing b41 on a private server together with friends. It's pretty fun, but we only use a handful of quality of life mods and a few vehicles.

is britta gun in build 42 yet?

B42 is 3 years in the making

launched as an alpha version without multiplayer and filled with bugs

only alters minor things and the lighting rendering

5 extra months of B42 beta, still no multiplayer

last update of the B42 beta was over a month ago

total lemmy death

mod list?

zombies are reddit

pay money for a worse verion of a free game!

Nice try Mr. Goldberg.

no? then I'm not playing

I thought about it but I have no friends

posted it in an earlier thread
but all you need is kink it up and frocking splendor, ash's hair and tomb's body overhaul

Did you guys know that the lead dev of Zomboid has written a reddit essay saying he wants to make arrows in Zomboid to be an actual 3d simulation? Yeah, it can't be like guns only slightly different, he wants arrows to be an actual projectile. And yeah, this is why they didn't add bows in B42 yet.

You can also thank him for making guns always hit and instead just not-do damage.

How fucking hard is it to add a parabola equation to the game? Despite the 2D isometric presentation, everything is calculated in 3d space, right?

please understand, their entire code got stolen when they left their laptop in an unlocked hotel room and didn't back it up anywhere

When does build 42 go into stable release?

1,5-2 years maybe

It's not that he can't make it function, it's that he can't make them DYNAMIC
Imagine if every time you shot an arrow, an entity spawned and was stuck in the world "geometry" be it zombies or walls or trees etc
Now, how quickly would you run out of memory and game will shit itself?

What would be good: gameplay additions with more dynamic zombies, NPCs and fighting, graphical overhaul.

What we get: insanely dull and time wasting micro-crafting. You spend 4 real world hours developing the ability to make stick.

Given the fog of war, you'd just store entities within a given sector of the map, and unload them when the player isn't in range. Then be autistic and put a hard cap on unimportant things (eg, like our arrows) so you can't overflow a list.

its even worse
it keep losing elements that was added

Kill yourself.

vertex form? i have to create a vortex to simulate arrows? THREE MORE YEARS.

Why hasn't anyone made a clone of this game to dethrone it? Or even an overhaul mod that adds a bunch of content?

we need our game to be as tedious as possible

BECAUSE MUH REALISM THIS IS HOW YOU DIED HARDCORE GAMING EARLY ACCESS PLS UNDERSTAND SAAR

1241455.jpg - 352x371, 21.94K

hire the guy that made the NPC mod

put him working on fishing or fabric weaving or some stupid crafting shit

patch game so NPC mod doesn't work anymore

???

I'm still salty at how much they nerfed in b42

stamina

firearms

looted buildings mechanic

march ridge military dorm (with annotated map)

louisville checkpoint

skill books, not only are there twice the amount to collect, but you get 1/10th from bookcases

Some devs really have their head so far up their own ass that they think only they know what's best for the game.

every time this game brought up I'm getting the urge to play CBN
this time I'm escaping the lab, for sure...

survival is trivial

after that there's nothing to do except for boring self directed goals like "clear out the mall"

They should have focused on adding actual content to the game. At this point the game is a better framework for a sims like dollhouse simulator than an actual zombie game.

God i hate crafting.

Man i sure do hope the next update adds even more lingerie!

The devs were originally modders for the Sims 2 so this was probably the natural endpoint of their game

rape

hm nyo :3

that's the spirit

defective cyborg start

spawn outside of the lab in a survivor's tent

simple as.

Project Zomboid is a lot of fun if you play it with a ton of mods where you get lots of clothes and guns to collect, to make your character a very pretty killer machine

NPCs

This is the only thing that needs to be implemented in game. Then lemmy and his gay cohort can fuck off and modders can completely take over.

sims 3 wasn't it? they did the original story progression mod which is funny considering all the NPC wankery with procgen families

Starting at the bottom of a 7 floor lap is fucking kino

6 hours just to reach the exit

instant death any moment

no fucking tools

barely make it out but your now broken as fuck from cbms

die within 2 days from hubris

That big ass laser was never meant to be used

It's not going forward it's regressing like Starbound.

>we need our game to be as tedious as possible

I learned my lesson with Valheim. Indie devs that market their game based on how "hard" it is just mean their game is barebones and empty content-wise.

watch Lemmy hire the Advanced Trajectory mod dev to implement it in the game and then have the guy create chicken cloaca dilatation simulation.

had to deal with all the negative/defective CBMs instead of just instantly deleting them as soon as I found an autodoc in the lab

honestly I feel like it was a more interesting early game than if I did the lab crawl proper.

I can't fucking believe I've been waiting for NPCs to be added for over a decade. And everytime I read the news about development it's like devs are going out of their way to spend inordinate amounts of time on irrelevant bullshit. It makes me so incredibly disappointed.

Have they got Brita's and gunslinger working yet? I'm not playing until I can play tacticool dressup and hunt for extremely rare guns
Also RV Interiors so I can make a mobile base

The lab is the best way to learn the game, it's so fucking dangerous though and right can be pretty bad, I like it as you really have to scavenge every floor and sometimes you can't even get out the closed entrance

It’s not fun

nothing can take the sting away

fuckin goofy ass plants vs zombies lookin heads

even if they release the npcs they can't fix the shitty weighted movement
the javajank engine
the god awful combat
in the 2D SOVL versions getting shot by an NPC was a 1 hit kill, as it should be

14 years and for what?!?
its over
its so fucking over

I wish i didn’t bought this game

whats the tactical advantage of dressing like a slut as you scavenge for stuff?

The main dev guy who wrote an actual essay on people being mean and then threatened to sell the game off to someone else is the hardest I've laughed in a while.

A stripper game start where you begin at that strip club at the north end of Louisville would be fucking nuts
But then again if you stabilize the situation the milsurp store is like two blocks away

pretty sure those types of mods have been around for a long while now

STILL NO MULTIPLAYER FOR B42... WTF

This is made by that one retard who shits up the Zomboid General thread with their tranny character, isn't it?

pretty sure those types of mods have been around for a long while now

You son of a bitch, I'm in.

NPC status?

There's a zomboid general?

Imagine, there was people thinking we'd get B42 stable before 2026... lmao

Oh my bad Anon Babble not Anon Babble, but similar enough.
Basically completely dead except for people with AGP posting their troon characters.

Basically completely dead except for people with AGP posting their troon characters.

So just like any Anon Babble general even though it's not Anon Babble

What game are you guys talking about?

Not her but probably Cataclysm Bright Night (or CCDA), you can choose starting scenarios that are pretty fun.

only alters minor things

lol

B41's gameplay

Find a car, a safe spot, smash zombies, you've won the game

B42's gameplay

The same, except now everything is a little more tedious

It barely altered anything. The only things it did sort-of change, are things that nobody actually interacts with.
Notice how nobody talks about smithing swords? Or armor? Or farming? Or any of the new stuff? Because it's all trash.

Because 90% of people here don't play the game.

Yes but I used to an that's what counts.

Nobody talks about zomboid's mechanics anywhere, because nobody actually interacts with them because they suck dick.

i'm just going around in lousiville with a double barrel shotgun in b41 and having a blast

People already got tired of complaining about every little thing months ago. I also noticed that people only discuss the game when someone posts a video about it which means barely anyone has first hand experience.
I can drop my opinions here too, but who fucking cares

these guys have made such a complicated mess of spaghetti it's hard to add/change things, and every update just makes that harder still.
I dunno what they did before this game but something tells me they never learnt how to structure a project
and the fact they "lost the source code" is even further evidence of this.

which means barely anyone has first hand experience

Because nobody can be bothered to play the same exact shit except without multiplayer and 200% more tedious.

The actual dude that made the sims, Will Wright, is a genius game designer and if they'd learned anything from him they'd have made a way better game.
The sims has way more shit going on player incentives wise than zomboid, despite it being a "dollhouse"

OP here
my current save I'm trying to level every single b42 skill to lv10
I can basically tell you how to powerlevel every skill and how to do almost anything in the game
I even rewrote the agriculture wiki article

thing is most le serious players are perpetually stuck in the early game trying to find a generator magazine/sledgehammer
people refuse to graduate from constantly dying to stupid shit early game, and because of that they are afraid of when the game finally opens up and no longer has an objective, at which point they "get boredx
I play with the They Knew mod and savescum if I get killed, this helps me learn the game fully

Are you doing it without xp multipliers? I had 2x-4x and even with those it takes too much time with some skills without puposefuly grinding them.

I'm waiting for b42 stable to do that and survive a year with a single character

no xp multipliers, as you can see skills like nimble are gonna take years to max out, even with the initial 75% (400%) bonus

What's the fucking point in having a skill system when it just makes you act like a retard to max them out?

Play cdda (or cbn, or other fork) if you have the matching autism strain for it.
It's got everything zomboid players ask for an more, but it's locked behind the control scheme.

thing is most le serious players are perpetually stuck in the early game trying to find a generator magazine/sledgehammer

people refuse to graduate from constantly dying to stupid shit early game, and because of that they are afraid of when the game finally opens up and no longer has an objective, at which point they "get boredx

no people get bored of this game. its genuinely a bad game. nothing past the early game besides looking at green bars go up. stop defending this piece of shit.

turn based

no thanks
it's just knowledge checks there is no risk or excitement to it

Zed Zone just dropped hostile human bandits.
A game worked on by one Chinaman allowed computer access 2 hours a day has released NPCs faster than a game supposedly worked on for 13 years.

I will pretend you didn't say that because I can assure you there is excitement in seeing rare loot (many more options than a generator and sledgehammer)
And the risks are massive when dealing with labs, subways, aircraft carriers, even spawn locations.

turn based

shit controls

tedious crafting

somehow even more autistic than zomboid

call me a causal, but I'd rather have fun

Cataclysm Bright Nights, it's basically roguelike project zomboid with cyborgs, mutants, aliens, and NPCs.

Hi OP can you post more .webms of your slutty character?

turn based

So? >shit controls
I agree they are horrible. But it turns into muscle memory.

Tedious crafting

That depends. Food is more enjoyable than zomboid when you realised zomboid is just stir fry, roast and stew. Catch me making sourdough bread starter and deep fries chicken from a car battery powered hot plate.

Autism

Correct.

2-5 years

Challenge shattered sky is my all time favourite.
I spent 3 days stop a hotel dumping all the furniture off and letting gravity kill a small horse below.
Turns out 1 nail can do a chip of damage. 200 is a lot more. And an entire fridge is just an instant kill.

Zed Zone

If only it wasn't hideously ugly

Do cdda and cbn have the same ending conditions? I've never found the end but I've raided a science tower and underground lab on separate playthroughs.

You're not entirely wrong, but it's more nuanced than just "bad game." Zomboid shines in the emergent gameplay and storytelling it lets you craft yourself—losing a 2-month survivor because you tripped climbing a fence while sick and sleep-deprived is *chef’s kiss*, peak suffering. But yeah, long-term progression is shallow. The issue is that once you're past the survival curve, you're just grinding bars with no real payoff or dynamic world evolution. People stick around for the immersion and roleplay rather than any real mechanical depth past early game.

Rumor is they're developing a console version in parallel hence the reason for their even slower pace.

The game never "opens up". Good sandboxes give you better late-game objectives and tools to engage with the game in new and interesting ways. Zomboid does nothing of the sort. Sure, you can grind Fishing/Foraging/Trapping to 10 so you never struggle for food, but by that point you probably already have enough food to last you for years so levelling those skills is meaningless. The world is never as open as the day you spawn in because after that there is nothing left to do. It's just a big, boring, empty world.
Zomboid offers a good "survival" experience, but fails very hard at making you feel like you've "conquered" the world.

Zomboid offers a good "survival" experience

For the first in game two weeks

Correct. That's the point where good games transition into the "conquering the world" aspect, but Zomboid does not, and that's why the mid to late game is so dull.

the game feels boring because you are not allowed to take risks
the punishment for taking a risk is too massive
other similar sandbox games have similarly dogshit all content once you learn to survive
kenshi for example boils down to exploring ruins to collect ancient books
but because it's almost impossible to die in kenshi, you can simply take risks, you try again, learn how to deal with the spider robot, get the books, progress, etc...
because I don't fear permadeath in zomboid I can also go out and explore, and learn the rest of the game
of course you can't because if you play with permadeath you risk losing all your skill points just by going out

I've got a group I play with. We've played together off and on for a couple years now. Currently doing cryogenic winter, 10 years later, 2x pop with 10% sprinters. It's absolutely brutal. We wanted a wipe where solo play was essentially impossible.

Britas is completely broken. No clue how people enjoy that mod. Genuinely ruins the game. Use VFE. Adds guns, but is also balanced. No supressors, except on a couple rare weapons like a variant of the ruger mk2.

Honestly? Just look for a server to play on that fits you. It doesn't take long to find one that has decent people in it. The group I play with even has a couple women who play & nobody treats them special & they never play the woman card.

Have a pretty great clip where she needed to die & was about to head out into the wilderness when I drop a saw at her feet. She instead just starts cutting her limbs off while 6 of us blast music & dance around her lol. We then turned her corpse into propane and keep it above the firelace as a momento.

My guess is it'll be sometime this summer, but it's really anyone's guess. B41 was unstable for 2 years before it got multiplayer.

sometime this summer

most optimistic man alive
forget about multiplayer, there's still planned b42 features missing

No clue how people enjoy that mod

They're underaged

Not that anon but I'm not a fan of turn based systems in games either. It feels too abstracted for me.
Plus the strict focus on a tile/grid even for vehicles and stuff like that. Zomboid has a tile based system for structures, but things like vehicles and zombies and the player being able to move more freely makes a difference.

this and thats not even getting into the fact that basic gameplay mechanics (for example combat) are fucking HORRIBLE

I like collecting weird and rare guns. It having like a billion different firearms makes things like gun stores a lot more interesting since it's no longer just like, 3 pistols and 2 rifles.
I don't even care about suppressors. Let me use a bolt action rifle with a bayonet on it, or an MG42. Or an automag, or a wingmaster shotgun, etc etc.

Funnily enough, that realism in general is not really a problem here. The issue is when realism is based on dev logic.

How hard is it to work on a top down 2D with 3D elements open world zombie game? It doesn't look like it has a very high production budget, so what gives?

and learn the rest of the game

there is no "rest of the game" its grinding up shitty skills to level 10 or making up your own "fun"
there isnt some vast wealth of content to be found in zomboid once you take risks there is nothing

in fact zomboid is a game where you want to remain as ignorant as possible on the game. once you realize how it works, you see how truly shallow and broken the game is.

It's literally a "realims for me but not for thee" with these bong retards. For example they still don't understand long guns are actually easier to shoot with than handguns.

Zomboid is getting mogged by a game developed by a lone chink. 7DTD is getting bandit NPCs and story mode sometime next year.
The Survivalist dev finished his first janky game that featured base building and NPC routines. During the time it took Indie Stone to go from B40 to B42, the same dev released his sequel in Early Access and then as of a few weeks ago hit 1.0.
If you want to speak even more broadly, almost-vaporware like Escape From Tarkov is releasing this year and Squadron 42 will release before B43 is even in IWBUMS.

I haven't played since like 2018, how much has the game changed? Is it more comfy to personalize your shelter?

It's spaghetti code. They're having to work with, around, and overwrite the jank they made over a decade ago. So that slows development to a crawl. It would be faster to just start over from scratch than continue developing the game.

How much has it changed.

A lot. Bunch of new territories, mechanics, animals, etc. They added in the trader, advanced cooking recipes, more of everything, endgame content, tool variants and a bunch of other stuff.
Go read through the snippets from the DLC.

Is it more comfy to personalize your shelter?

Yep. They've made every single bit of furniture moveable, added in a bunch of crafting options for decorations and furniture. You can also take photos with 3 prebaked filters and then put them up around your base.

I want to play this game I really do but I think the UI is fucking terrible and I hate the controls. Ironically I think using a controller feels better but then the UI really starts to eat shit.

If anything they're discouraging remaining in one location for too long with updates like the Cougar.

The Cougar is a territorial menace. He quite literally hampers transit because his lair locations are prebaked into border zones.

what is refactoring?
spaghetti code is such a shitty excuse, cause you can take any code and just marry it to new, well written code with some interfaces, then you can just build on top of that and refactor old code in spare time.
if it's spaghetti code after 14 years of development then it means that the dev didn't learn to code in all those years.

Not playing 42 until stable. Outside of basements it adds literally nothing I'm interested in.

movable furniture

craftable decorations and furniture

Nice, guess I'm reinstalling and playing it today.

I'm hoping it can be disabled.

NTA but is the DLC worth buying?

door with tons of zombies behind it

not even silent ones, can actually hear them so cant blame the janky audio this time

know opening it is a mistake that will probably get me killed

open it and get dragged down soon after

1432.jpg - 500x352, 69.3K

I'm just glad that there are finally more devs trying to replicate or surpass PZ. If I can get another game that has

a non procedurally generated map like PZ's, with a big chunk of a county or state with multiple towns or cities and long distances to travel between stuff

a 3D directly controlled character in real time (ie. Not a 2D sprite, not turn based, not controlled by pointing and clicking like an RTS) that I can dress up and equip

a broad range of weapons both melee and ranged, and with at least as realistic mechanics for firearms (magazines need to be loaded individually, guns need to be racked/cocked, etc)

the ability to construct your own shelter, or convert an existing structure, or live out of a van/RV with similar vehicle mechanics like engine maintenance, fuel, etc.

very customisable sandbox rules so I can decide how many zombies there are, how rare stuff is, what time of year, etc etc

a health/illness system at least (if not more) complex than PZ, ideally something on the level of one of the mods that add a lot more medical stuff to deal with

every prop and item you find and pick up has a purpose even if just as decoration

Then I'll be happy.

Yes. Adds 3 new areas and a ton of mechanics. Dynamic wildlife is among my favourites. No more static spawns and if you poach too hard you fuck with the local population.
Leads to kino scenarios wherein you've fished out everything that could be fished in say, Mystery Lake, and now you have to haul ass to Milton for unlooted imperishables lest you starve.

Dynamic wildlife is among my favourites. No more static spawns and if you poach too hard you fuck with the local population.

Thats badass, def copping on a sale.

Still no MP?

But most games do that?

How quickly you run out of memory

Why?
The data you need

Arrow (object id, string)
Coordinates (3 doubles)
Rotation (3 doubles)
Object it is stuck to (string)
Weight (double)
Condition (double)

That like 72 bytes or so per arrow. Or 14 thousand arrow for a single megabyte of memory.

I'm hoping it can be disabled

Yup. Its a toggle at the beginning of a save. You can just opt out.
