Doom: The Dark Ages is unplayable on budget hardware

He bought a 3060, thinking it would last him through the generation

lol
lmao, even

Even UE5 games are less demanding than this.

slop.png - 1126x1471, 484.9K

ID software used to be the main proponents of software optimization, and were staunch vulkan supporters
Then Microsoft bought them, made them switch to directx12 and this happened

30 fps is playable

denuvo tax

Just enable DLSS

holy shit 9070xt btfos the 5080

id software have never shipped a dx12 game.

so the game cannot be played on a card with less than 8GB vram at all?

Even if it could, the frame rate would suck.

damn, my nephew wont be able to play with his 1660 super, he was looking forward to this

3080

84 fps

3080 can be found for budget prices nowadays so what you're saying isn't true

yes it can. you just turn down the texture pool size. at default it's 2gb. if you reduce it to 1.5gb 8gb cards run flawlessly.

And you communist pcfaggots have the audacity to make fun of Pls5 and SeX enjoyers having "no games" when you can't even ruj them

what does a 5090 do on 4K Ultra? is there any card that can play it at that resolution?

misinformation??? on MY Anon Babble???

They are still far more optimized than all UEslop games

ah ok

this game still uses vulkan, retard

Every game that pcfags complain about running bad runs EVEN WORSE on console

actually true

fucking unrealslop, if only they had used a proprietary engine this would never-
o-oh, never mind...

It is more likely than you think! In fact off the top of my head on PC no id software game has ever used directx. Doom 1 & 2 were lmao dos days. Quake was software and used some opengl shenanigans for the 3d accelerated version. From there it is opengl all the way until 2016 got a vulkan patch and eternal plus dark ages being vulkan only.

More embarrassing part is 4080 mogging 5080.

yea 4070 ti almost beats the 5080 too

shitty optimization in modern games impacts PC harder you dumb macaque. The overwhelming majority of Steam users can't even run this at 720p, let alone the 10-20% who have capable hardware

Why does it run so well on the 9070xt?

consolefag cope

Perfect balance between rasterization and RT performance.

You shouldn't trust benchmarks from a known AMD shill.

t. UserBenchmark

it is totally normal that a 9070xt and 7900xtx are nipping on the heels of a 4090 when in 99.9% of other games they are slower than a 4080 (regular, not even the super)

Numbers which nobody else has either.

consolefag cope (again)

nigger.png - 1007x576, 53.98K

6700XT not there

So i bought last year and can possibly get 60 FPS on medium setting on some medieval parry slop? No thanks

Ill be honest, alot of the time i hear discussions about performance, a lot of the stuff goes over my head. Terminology like vram and occlusion and vulkan
I just know I have a 3080 and I believe thay means my performance will be ok.

Why don't they make a mod that removes raytracing?

where's the 1440p numbres

im curious if someone actually will find a way to disable it

the game will probably be a shimmer fest with out it i imagine, like turning off AA in a modern game ends up with picrel

Total PC tranny death

almost fell for 3.5 meme

buy sapphire 290 instead

lasts me entire console gen and then some, fantastic card

grab shitty msi 5070 right before crypto/covid price hike

upgraded to sapphire rx 9070 for 600 bucks

I think I did alright. Keep in mind most of Anon Babble is full of retarded animeposters.

RT is the future of gaming because it's way cheaper and better than baked lighting, it's smarter to start now and force hardware to use it than to be caught unprepared by the next generation. In a few years and a few more generations of GPUs, people would appreciate ID going full into pathtracing and RT in the long run.

2070 not even in the graph

Haha... c'mon guys... the 2070 is not THAT old haha....

RT is the future of gaming

More like an useless gimmick meant to make the consumer spend more by destroying raster performance

Gaming is the only 3D rendering still being done without raytracing. Everyone else moved on decades ago.

If any 40 series card can barely handle your game on medium settings at 1080p your game is optimized like shit, I don’t even care what it looks like. The mere fact that games are still benchmarked at 1080p in 2025 is proof of how low optimization standards have fallen.

Because it's the only one that cares about real time rendering performance, all other kinds of 3D graphics have the luxury of being able to wait for their frames

turns on DLSS-Q at turns settings low

so anyway that's 144fps on my 5 year old entry level gpu

pre-rendering vs real time rendering

That's the issue you retard. Even the strongest gpu's still lack the horsepower to achieve rt at acceptable performance.

RX 6600

welp glad i swapped out that card this year

I own a 7900 xtx. Stop being poor Jamal.

RT is the future of gaming because it's way cheaper and better than baked lighting,

Billion fucking games

Lighting has never been an issue

Most budget is spent on voice actors, accurately remaking some real life city and marketing

Most consumers are poorfags that can't bear the extra costs of having RT

Its like you imagine its a solution to a problem that never existed. When in actuality they just don't give a fuck, they did it just because.
Always on RT and upscaling necessary makes it seem like they fired everyone that knew their shit there, Mick Gordon included and just hired the usual AAA slop developers.

You're missing the point, the industry is building next generation hardware to be better at RT than raster. In 20 years your top of the line nVidia GPU will be shit at playing old games, just like 5090s are shit at physix today.

Is it forced hardware RT or just software RT?

baked lighting takes months of processing to be done and adds hundreds of GB of data into the game, with hardware finally getting powerful enough it's smarter to just turn on forced RT and skip all those problems and get benefits instead.

tired of hearing this shit, games still take 6 years to make even with RT, if anything they're taking longer

you are the ideal consumer

i bought a 9070xt actually, so im chilling and dabbing on y'all poorfags

Yeah because they still have to bake in the lighting for people like you with 10 year old GPUs.

because gaming is real time rendering retardo

better than baked lighting,

not for real time rendering retardo. and never will be. what you are correct about is that it's cheaper. so publishers will get to lay off their lighting artists and save a bunch, but you as the consumer will carry that burden of having to buy a thousand dollar gpu to run games that can't match the graphical fidelity of games of the yesteryear outside of marketing stills without needing x3 the rendering power and fake frames, which again, comes out of your pocket. not the publishers

Lighting has never been an issue

you've never made a game, tard
I still remember the story of how sega had to depower a whole city block with hundreds of PCs to try to finish baking the lighting on sonic unleashed and they still couldn't make it in time

i have a 4080 super retard, stop projecting

NO SAAAR DO NOT REDEEM THE RTX IT IS NOT NECESSARY

SAAAARRR

raytracing looks like ass. baked lighting is far superior

Rajeesh projecting because he has to shit on the street

many such cases!

lol faggot.png - 1694x441, 90.87K

I assumed this was the usual 4k raytracing and upscaling chart and thought you were overreacting but it's fucking 1080p medium. How the fuck.

Isn’t PhysX a completely outdated solution from a time when CPUs were generally overloaded, so Nvidia decided to calculate some physics on the gpu instead? What would even be the point of making sure newer gpus run PhysX well? Can you even tell the difference in performance?

baked lighting takes months of processing to be done and adds hundreds of GB of data into the game

Doom Dark Ages size - more than 100GB, largest its ever been in its franchise

No benefits ever found anywhere

Still pretending its the solution to bunch of problems that never existed in first place. Time to accept ID Software fired everyone and hired bunch of AAA slop devs

Doom Dark Ages still has baked lighting. Path tracing is what you use to avoid that. "Ray tracing" just means you're using ray traced light sources for dynamic lighting. Path tracing is when literally everything is ray tracing.

Is RX 6800 good? I stream to my steamdeck often. I'm on RTX 2060 atm.

Garbage engine.

It's game-specific. The new cards mog the old generally speaking. This engine in particular is a clusterfuck for Nvidia.

Doom Dark Ages still has baked lighting

It literally doesn't, it completely replaced it with RTGI and that is why RT is always on for this instalment.
You tried to justify solutions to problems that never existed in first place you don't even know what you are saying anymore.
People always cope that everyone is done for a reason and it has to mean something

levels are completely static yet still need RT

I don't get it. Surely it can't be that much work for artist to just fake the lighting? It worked in the past, why does it suddenly not work?

It's so over for me

The hardware for playable fps while doing raytracing just isn't here yet. They should quit pushing this shit already

>He bought a 3060, thinking it would last him through the generation

The 3060 was a 1080p60fps GPU from two generations ago, five years ago. If you're expecting it to breeze through every game in the next half decade you're extremely entitled.

>Billion fucking games

>Lighting has never been an issue

fuck off idiot

It should be something that can be fixed by drivers.

1.8tb

I see you were a victim of the shady practice that assumes 1kb = 1000b without telling you

baked

games mostly use dynamic lighting

Yes, it is normal for XTX to stick near 4090 outside of RT of course. Is your next line going to be "AMD has shit drivers"?

Path tracing is what you use to avoid that.

No it isn't. You don't even need ray tracing at all to avoid baked lighting.

They took away all the fun movement so 30fps should be fine for this game.

Wtf is this shit?
I paid £1000 for it.

based 4080 owner

15fps is fine actually

I have a 5700xt.... How fucked am I?

OP:

119 vs. 137, +15%

Your graph:

112 vs. 133, +18%

The game is definitely AMD-favored, but not by THAT much.

The game is hardcoded to not run on your GPU (pre RTX cards for Nvidia, pre 6000 series for AMD) purely for planned obsolescence.

Is this with or without ray tracing?

Some form of raytracing is forced. Probably with the lowest RT settings is my guess. The lowest preset doesn't perform that much better than medium in any case.

in this thread we cling to outdated solutions

You can force software Raytracing on Linux. Indiana Jones is also technically "unsupported" because it requires RT accelerators, but it runs fine even on Vega cards: youtube.com/watch?v=cT6qbcKT7YY
No idea if you can do this on Windows.

Raytracing is enabled by default. Path tracing isn't available yet.

mfw proud owner of a 3060Ti rugpulled by Jensen

global illumination doesn't replace baked light you mongol.

is this you? you ran from the other thread to cope here?

Given we know AMD cannot into ray tracing I think it is clear that OP's chart should be held with suspicion.

wtf why's 9070xt so strong?

4070ti super as fast as the 5080

nvidias 5000 drivers must be fucked

it should be able to handle 100-120 fps on low + dlss, as long as there is not 8gb bottleneck

Good ray tracing

Didn't expect my slop card (4070ti super) to go head to head with the fucking 5080

Then i won't.

code of the game is optimized for consoles running on AMD

I'm not playing in those conditions, id will get my money in 2-3 years once I've upgraded.

Kek I spent near 1K on a 5070ti only to get mogged like this, not that it matter since I don't play parryslop

Clearly they can, as long it's not Nvidia specific RT code that is.

stuck with fsr2

oh no no

And why does it beat the 5070 Ti which has slightly better theoretical performance across the board.

stuck with fsr2

I'm not.

Loving the generational leap from a 4070S to a 5070Ti
Absolutely ebin

What the fuck are those completely random numbers lmao
Also reviews are saying the game runs well
Not that it matters since I wont play this trash

Yeah right. Hard pass for me. I'll probably try it on sale when I get my new PC in 2 years from now.

Driver devs must have been replaced by vibe coders at Nvidia

i also have 7900 xtx. how's the latest driver going? i keep hearing bad shit, im still on 24.8.1

Works for me. It isn't like I can play every game extensively to test but i've not had any issues in my use cases.

I never understood why the system requirements keep getting higher and higher? This will only exclude more people from buying and playing your game. Shouldn't optimizing be a priority since it will at least run on a system that meets the bare minimum requirements?
What are the developers thinking?

I never understood why the system requirements keep getting higher and higher?

You know what is bullshit? Far cry 1 won't run on my voodoo 2 sli setup.

isn't the pc port literally sponsored by nvidia?

Hoping for software solutions such as DLSS to pick up the slack, notice how the shittiest examples like MHW barely mention native resolutions in their recommended specs. This is compounded by the fact that DLSS also works well to attenuate problems in modern engines such as dithering, shimmering and others.
There is going to be breaking point where the hardware at "reasonable" prices isn't going to keep up with modern AAA visual fidelity+incompetence, but for now unoptimized garbage is perfectly fine because people standards are quite low (again, see MHW's massive success).

watched a youtube video of some guy who had a 5090rtx

Couldn't run borderlands 2 with physx (ran below 15fps) because the card lacks the component that is necessary to run it efficiently.

What a joke. As the years go by, all we get are diminishing returns.

3060ti should still serve you well for this game though

youtube.com/watch?v=JMxgzw9HvN8

the guy is playing on low settings if you want to skim thru. doesn't look bad to me. and as long as you're upgrading, don't buy nvidia shit. they are basically trying to kill gaming in 2025

Yes.

Then why does it run so poorly on nvidia?

You don't need 32bit hardware support my guy. The only good thing about this is nvidia did actually finally open source all of the old physx library so at least if someone wanted to fuck around with it and possibly make fan patches they can.

'cuz id software actually knows what they are doing and have a long history of not leaning into propriety technology.

AMD still win from both nextgen consoles and devs focusing on them.
They won't rewrite the engine just because nvidia also throw them some cash.

dont listen to the retard. microjew is xbox. xbox is ayymd.

Because it's still optimized for consoles first, which are amd boxes.
that + horseshit nvidia drivers currently

I have a 3060 ti and was thinking about upgrading but I just can't bring myself to do it, I only play at 1080p and the new gpu are so bad, what games are even worth the upgrade?

finally open source all of the old physx library

Only PhysX 3, which these games don't use.

Doom 2016 ran buttery smooth on my i5 processor and 970 card. Dark Ages doesn't look any more advanced graphically yet requires stronger hardware. How is this possible? Surely game developers don't make backroom deals with hardware manufacturers to increase spec requirements artificially, they would never do that right

dafuq.jpg - 849x476, 34.66K

now compare the amount of ps5s to the amount of ps4s and ps3s

And it's bad for business when the only people who can play these games have pc's that are worth thousands of dollars. Limiting your customers.
They don't need to go down the fortnite/WOW route of simplifying the graphics but at least optimize the size of the asset files and write better algorithms for performance so that even a 1000-2000 series cards can run it. Think of the profits mr shekelstein!

wait the game FORCES raytracing??? it can't even be launched without it?

HAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAA

Does it run on eck

They're expecting you to play it with DLSS/FSR enabled. Enable it and it runs quite well on 5 year old GPUs.

'cuz id software actually knows what they are doing and have a long history of not leaning into propriety technology.

This game literally has mandatory RT.

Dark Ages doesn't look any more advanced graphically

You're basing this on compressed Youtube footage. Don't be like that.

I don't think you know what RT is or why it isn't some nvidia only technology.

Needs DLSS to run well

Not leaning into proprietary technology

60fps on a 5 year old midrange gpu using the latest and greatest technology isn't running well

Look anon, your decade old laptop is not a super computer like you think it is.

not that anon, but mandatory RT sounds like extremely lazy or incompetent devs that literally refused to do baked lighting from the outset as a design principle. if they cut corners there, where else did they cut corners? it's like hiring someone to build your house knowing that they skip foundations because it's too time consuming.

How much better than 2016 could it possibly look, which already had pretty damn good visuals 9 years ago. Holy shit 9 years have already passed

put setting on max

put 4k

put dlss performance

set lossless to 4x

oh yeah its gaming time

gar.png - 800x450, 38.21K

the game runs on native medium 1080p at 60 fps on a 5 year old midrange (3060ti), safe to say it will run double that on low + dlss.

that said it would run even better without the forced hardware memetracing shit, that is entirely on microsoft/zenimax. all their recent games required hardware memetracing.

Holy shit 9 years have already passed

latest and greatest technology

Such as?

Ray tracing

Metro Exodus is 6 years now, anon. It's not this revolutionary technology any more.

go from games that can play on a potato to games that require a 5090

microsoft definitely did id dirty after acquisition.

I 'member when you needed a pentium to play doom at 35fps - if you owned a 486 you can go fuck yourself for full speed gameplay.

35 FPS with a software renderer is basically equivalent to 60 FPS in a modern renderer in terms of latency. Combined with a typical CRT running at 70Hz, it would have been very snappy.

you are so deluded and retarded

Not that anon, but this is UE5 on a 3060.
youtu.be/KNjJ59mqZmw

The 4070super continues being the patrician choice for GPU's.

Yes but the pentium was the most powerful and expensive cpu mortals could buy at the time. The cpus people actually used ran the game like shit.

7600XT

It's all over
I bet GTA6 will run without an issue on such hardware

Can't get 144fps in new doom on a fresh 5070 on a fucking 1080p on a FUCKING MEDIUM

the 3060 on 1080p medium here averages 60fps while the image says it would average 54fps on 1080p medium

Bro why do they keep adding shit that makes the games run even worse?
Do the big publishers have a competition on who can make the worst running game?
They does even look better. But are still getting bigger.
I bet this is gonna be 120gb minimum. For a fucking fps.

all that to look and play like borderlands with a gritty reshade lmao more like DOOMED

Jesus christ, this game isn't going to feel smooth at all running a 4k 240 OLED.

Weren't 2016 and Eternal exceptionally well optimized? What the fuck happened?

GB means RAM or VRAM?
I ave 4060Ti. my RAM is 16GB but VRAM 8gb

Depends on the model. There were 100MHz 486's that were miles ahead of the low-end trash.

forced raytracing on

looks the same as doom 2016

this industry is a scam

Id tech engine supposed to be BASTION of good optimization above all this 20FPS DLSS Monster Hunter Wilds tier slop. It has fallen. It's all over. The future of 12 FPS DLSS OFF > 60 FPS (RTX 9090) UPSCALE from 240p DLSS ON is real.

It is a gpu benchmark and is listing the vram capacities of the test cards.

it's like hiring someone to build your house knowing that they skip foundations because it's too time consuming.

Keeping a legacy render path is like building a stone house but adding some wood between the walls so you still need to worry about it rotting.
Around 60% in the Steam HW survey have an RT capable GPU. But I assume they know what percentage of people on non-RT hardware buy new full price games and wouldn't do this if it was a significant portion.

forced ray tracing in idtech8
literally cant get 144 frames with low settings and dlss/fsr on performance no matter the hardware, even top tier
