Black Mesa is a good start, I'd even say it's the best of the half-life games, with Half-Life 1 being a close second.

Half-Life 2 feels very unpolished and I think the primary reason it's remembered so well is out of sheer nostalgia and being a cornerstone of gaming at the time it came out.

Black Mesa (until Xen) makes HL1 feel like a fanfic. That said, it is still fundamentally the same game so I wouldn’t blame anyone for skipping it.

Half Life 2 was remembered because that's when Valve came out with the Source Engine. It was not only a good game, but it debuted an engine used to this day. Granted, they finally came out with Source 2, but that was like 15 years later and is still not as widely adopted as Source 1.

False. You can develop Source 2 stuff on Linux. Granted, it was initially made with Windows in mind. Over the years, Valve has opened it up to other OS's like Linux and Mac OS. And granted, it might not be as widespread, reaching, and powerful as the Windows tools, but it's still there and they're making progress.

As far as I know you can write Squirrel documents on linux, and something like VTF conversion tools are basically universal because of how low complexity an image converter is.
I can't fire up Hammer and if I wanted actual maps for my shit to work with I'd have to spin up a partition or a VM.

First of all, it's really more similar to Metroid Prime, if anything.
Second, how is it worse? Original Xen did have an uniquely alien and oppressive atmosphere that the new one lost, but it was also a rushed mess, every other aspect (including things like environmental storytelling) is miles better in Black Mesa's version.

HL2 feels very unpolished in comparison to Black Mesa. I need someone to make a Black Mesa style remake of Half Life 2.

BM has a better Black Mesa, but a worse Xen. The original HL1 is still very much worth playing regardless.

The weapons and feedback are better in BM than in HL2. A large part of HL2 was taken up by vehicle levels and squad command levels, neither of which appear in BM.

I heard there was an opposing force mod for black mesa. The actual opposing force/blue shift remake(operation black mesa) that is being worked on by a different dev had some hiccup over some gay shit I believe.
