I didn't like Metaphor. Combat was slightly better than Persona/SMTV I guess but it's still pretty much the same system since 30 years ago.
Music was shit compared to Persona.
Graphically it was yet again super outdated while employing stylized style that made it look worse than a PS3 game (not being fecetious).
The story was way too up it's own ass about all about high concepts while at the same time constantly deploying dumb anime shit (villain man being impaled through the chest with a spear, falling down 20 meters and then being ok the next day).
The social link equivalents were bad and forgettable, being focused on vague ideas like knight's honor, noble's duty to their subjects, religious prejudice etc compared to relatable human drama that made persona characters enjoyable.

When it comes to UE slop VV is much better than E33 but it's also ugly as sin in so many ways. If it wasn't a switch game at heart and they didn't need to do things like smear every environment in fog or sand to mask the loading, design the encounters so enemies can't chase you more than six feet from their designated area, or cut features like being able to get ambushed by storms of demons anywhere shown in the TGS demo and not just in scripted instances by the ubisoft towers I'd like it a lot more.

The problem with V/VV is the story. In V it seems like it was going somewhere interesting but never reaches there and goes into derp mode. In VV the chaos route just reuses everything from Law. E33 has a great story but the balancing of things like parry/dodge window and lack of balancing is a weakness.

All in all, it will be interesting to see where E33 goes if it gets a sequel. Maybe one where the painter disappears for very long periods and something akin to the Freeze Frame Revolution for Lumiere where the painter starts to lose it or disappears from the canvas for long periods. Set during a painter / writer upheaval ripe for backstabbing, politics and murder.

I feel E33 is better the more you try to play it like a traditional RPG instead of learning all the timings. It's not fully doable by itself, like you can't ignore dodge/parry entirely, but just seeing what you can get and building around being able to heal ironically makes the game feel more active. Also I like free aim, I think you could do an entire turn based games around guns with a more elaborate version of it.

Also, this is really controversial but I really like V from a story perspective. I like how much focus it gives to the demon side characters and the whole concept of conflict being caused by the empty throne. When the original game came out there was an Italian reviewer (i think it was IGN Italy) that described the game as being like playing a religious mythology in the making. I really subscribe to that description. It's weird and abrupt in some places but I think the mystery is part of the appeal. You want to understand something that shouldn't etc. The biggest problem with the base game was the human side characters being really neglected but VV totally addresses that and now it does feel complete.

I like E33's story but I don't feel it's a really big departure from any contemporary JRPG, it's the same story with a French/Art Gallery motif.

ive been playing jrpgs since ff6 snes just play E33. Is it the best jrpg of all time? no, but it might be in my top 10. The beauty of E33 is it is unironically mature with fun combat and grind. You can skill diff your way through super bosses but you can also out grind it / out build it. We have the open world back like the old jrpg days including an airship as well and it's great. Some of the characters are gay and boring (Sciele and Lune), but some work really well (Gustave and Maelle). As much as I love jrpgs there are gay faggot moments in all of them and they're made for teenagers. E33 is made for actual adults. Call it cope but it was the most addicting jrpg ive played since ff12 or bravely default.

Adding onto this, jrpgs can be mature as well. My favorite game of all time is FF tactics (srpg but still). E33 matches the maturity of a matsuno game but with slightly worse writing. The story is also good.
