The snowball started with an exposure of a pretty shit translation, worsened then by a transgender voice actor representing not just any character, but a fairly major one in-game, kicked off more with the fact that this whole nonsense was the product of mishandling and failing to prioritize suitable staff to localize and translate the game at a time where hyper criticality of it -of translations everywhere- has been soaring quite high.
This, the result of one man's autistic effort, showing the world a no name company inextricably linked to transgender promotion and culture was to 'handle' the game's English presentation. For Kodaka, being bankrupt and on the verge of corporate destruction took him places he should never have ventured to. It didn't help that the company responsible for translating his game were obstinate in their insistence to leave their 'mark' on it, a scheme enacted to try and promote themselves, for of course the name of Kodaka is one popular, and one that would never have graced their sorry miserable line were it not for his dire state. Hence - the infamous 'cracking egg' joke.
Active Gaming Media was created to specialize in transgender promotion - to communicate this to the world, they then set on localizing that specific line, in that specific way, which led to this blowup.
Further, Kodaka's begging on twitter until he himself realized the double edged takeaway of this; projecting the image of a tramp, was not good for promotion. It betrays any notion that the game has merit enough to do good on exposing itself for all interested to engage - not something like a girl begging to be noticed.
Then, the censorship with nintendo, and finally again the return to an uncovering of the translation by a professional translator in which it was revealed that, localization aside, yes, just localization - the game's textual content, where and when it mattered, was sanitized, and therefore censored.

The reality is it was just very unfortunate timing for them to release the game. Oblivion had come out 2 days prior and Expedition 33 dropped on the same day, it was all but a guarantee that the game was going to fail.
The game itself is also kind off a hard sale, you have to play 30 hours of a glorified tutorial and then the game finally opens up, but I'm not even sure if this is a good idea because I'm currently stuck in a route where Kurara, Kyoshika and Tsubasa all want to date Takumi and I'm ready to drop the fucking game already since it's so boring.

In Danganronpa 2 the final reveal is actually that YOU'RE ALL ULTIMATE DESPAIRS and they have to stay in the simulation because it's COMMENTARY, and then it pussy foots on whether or not they can actually bring everyone back.
Danganronpa V3 just exchanges it out for everything is fiction and the ending is basically identical to DR1's. I honestly don't get how people can get mad at the "everything is fiction" twist when Danganronpa's main narrative already didn't give much of a shit.
Several key plot points in DR2-6 are contradicted by DR1's ending, understanding the main antagonist of the series is reliant on reading a Japanese only light novel, said light novel has a dubious canonicity status anyways thanks to Danganronpa 3, like genuinely I don't know how anyone could possibly care that V3 says "Yeah the games are fictional".
