Speedrunning died because of two things: Fragmentation and convenience.

There are too many micro-communities for speedgames now. So many small events that never gain traction, not to mention categories with little to no competiton. I saw it happen myself, a game with a very dedicated base died in less than a year because there weren't enough of us, and once one guy brought RTA down significantly we all gave up trying to beat him. Everyone in the Discord came from other games, so we didn't really have a common bond. In addition, our GDQ run went very poorly, even Anon Babble was harsh on the runners, so that didn't help either. Long story short, games live and die unpredictably, and legacy speedruns are unfortunately dominated by the same few people who you can't really expect noobs to reach the skill level of. This means that all that remains is recreational speedruns, or further fragmenting by finding new games and inventing meme categories.

Let's now talk about speedrunning as content. Channels like EasySpeezy, Summoning Salt and Abyssoft aren't really about the games, but attempt to use fast gameplay as a means to tell stories. Then you have the endless ripoffs, mostly speedrun "documentaries" that this board has joked about for a long time now. They are all identical and only exist to give people more useless filler to help pass the time. The worst offender though are videos that take a segmented run and just add commentary, explaining every trick in extreme detail without any humor or fuck-ups. That's the exact opposite of what marathons do, but more people want to watch it apparently. This means that the core speedrunning experience of watching someone do runs on their stream is only for a niche group, when before it was literally the main attraction.

Why did this happen exactly? Mostly just the Internet becoming gayer and lamer over time.
