Review from someone who actually played it on Nightmare unlike 99% of this board who doesn't play anything.

POSITIVES

Game is NOT slow, far faster than 2016 and can definitely be just as chaotic as Eternal

Gameplay is fun once you get used to it

Exploration is rewarding

No weapon mastery skills, instead they just give golden skins now, which is better for replayability

Twice as many weapons as any Doom game

Possibly the most enemy variety of any game in the series

Weapons are mostly fairly balanced

Easily has the best bosses of any Doom game

Mech/dragon gimmick levels are okay and very few and far inbetween so they don't overstay their welcome

NEGATIVES

Extremely underwhelming soundtrack, not a single memorable song

Weapon swapping is too slow

No fast travel for secrets after you clear a level

Basic shotgun is far better than the super shotgun

Shield runes and melee weapons are very imbalanced. The last melee weapon you get far outclasses the other two and same with the last shield rune you get being leagues better than the others

Overall pretty good and close to Eternal. I'd give it an 8/10.

Am I the only one that thinks this game is harder than 2016 and Eternal on nightmare ? I lost count the number of times I died to some random projectile behind me because fodder kept doing circles around me while I was fighting the big guys, or when I'm locked into the melee animation and a random bullet appears right in front of me and I can't block it in time

Skull crusher is literally the least useful gun. The plasma guns do more single target dps and the other does a chain stun on everything when you kill a heavy demon with it.

What's wrong with the final boss? They throw out a ton of projectiles to dodge and you need to keep shifting attention between both.

Speaking of the plasma gun why does it sound so bad? Not like an energy weapon at all. I keep thinking I'm firing the shredder.

I think it's because without fast weapon swapping they designed every gun to be usable by itself but you usually still have enough ammo to last a whole fight. To "solve" this problem you would have to turn down the resources but I'm not toying around with that until next playthrough

I never used the wide one, but the second skull crusher was great because you could just hold the trigger and keep getting health and ammo back.
I'd rather not turn down the resources, because that just nerfs all the map pickups like 2016 did on Nightmare. The weapons portion of the game just isn't well-designed.

I beat the first level on Nightmare just now. I'm surprised how much I like the look of it. I thought the levels would be boring. Finding things like the weird fish, cults and this thing made retrying after dying more fun.

NTA I used the cannon when doing campaign on nightmare, but I think daggers are better because of the damage to the demons around you, which will help killing everyone faster, the auto cannon melts whats in front of you, but by the time you get it, you are already capable of dealing high damage to your main target, so the cannon becomes useful only against 3 enemies (komodo, cyberdemon and Vagary, since they have a lot of HP).

Dagger distributes damage better so it's superior overall.

So far I'm enjoying it more than Eternal. It's slower but it does feel a bit closer to Doom 1 and 2 while still having loot pinata ammo refills. Maps are still feeling 2016/Eternal as far as secret finding goes which is tolerably fun. Each one might take a second or two to find when you start looking at your map but there's a decent pile to be found. Nightmare's been good, enemy projectiles track way more than I'd like, and being able to change the holo-Doomguy to the regular Doomguy pleased me greatly. It feels like a departure from Eternal but it owns, Doom continues to have never had a bad game

Best thing about this game is no stupid fucking glory kills. I hate glory kills so fucking much. Having to pause the game and watch a 3-5 second cutscenes EVERY TIME you kill an enemy is what makes me unable to replay Eternal.
As for your post I haven't gotten to any of the bosses but I agree with most of this. It's pretty fun. The soundtrack is extremely disappointing which is kind of unbelievable because I thought the music really elevated the previous two games. It has that bland video game background music feel to it. There was one track where there's an actual melody but it's toned so far down you can barely hear it, it's like they had no confidence in making the tracks. The first mech level was VERY easy and I'm generally not having a very hard time on nightmare, the weapons and shield are fun. It's weird that some of the slow moving projectiles are not parryable because there's no dodge, your only option is to block as far as I can tell which is kind of lame.
My biggest complaint is the visuals. The game performs well but I just feel like it looks worse than eternal. The medieval dark fantasy shit mixed with sci fi tech does not mesh for me.

I feel like the dynamic music undercuts the ost, it doesn't get a chance to build up into the better moments of some songs. Story and side characters are quite weak and I have no investment in it. Gameplay is okay, combats fine. Aesthetics or visuals is fine but I prefer the more future-tech look.

It seemed like the main focus of the music was to sync up with the gunshots, it's most obvious when you use an automatic weapon.

It seems like your weapon decisions are dictated by range more than enemy type, and your shield dash (with a generously speedy recharge time) lets you close range easily. Ammo, shields, and HP still have specific triggers but they're not as integral to the loop as Eternal which had you tied to Glory Kill/Chainsaw/Flamethrower.

I was concerned after the digital foundry review but the game performance has been totally solid for me. No complaints outside of the fact that when I started the game up it set my resolution to 4k and maxed out everything (and it still ran fine but pulled 400W lmao). At native res (1440p) and scaling mode = Quality its closer to under 250W and its a solid 144fps with no drops afaict.

I'm mostly having fun with the game but having a really hard time adjusting to the playstyle (I'm 4 chapters in)

Can't run away and the 'don't stop moving or you die' from Eternal seems completely removed

Mixing parries with the hugely increased enemy count is just annoying. You have to parry to take advantage of the invincibility/shield block you get at the right time avoid damage but it doesn't feel good, it feels like a clusterfuck

Glory kills being replaced with executions is so pointless and honestly just painful. You go from a *reward* when you kill an enemy (glory kill gets you ammo/health/whatever PLUS invincibility PLUS launches you in from super far away PLUS with runes you get speed ups or whatever PLUS glory kill state was super long). Executions take away all that and basically force you to go in to do melee but you have no invincibility and its just high risk no reward.

I hope I can get better and it clicks. Eternal didn't really click for me until a bit later into the game. Also holy fuck what is with the bizarre floaty movement when you sprint? Why does being in sprint suddenly turn all inclines into ice and jumps into moon jumps? You know they could have gotten rid of dashing and double jumps and not fucked with anything else and it would have been fine movement wise.

i'm only into chapter 6 but i'm still clueless about the gameplay loop, and i played eternal for 300hrs+, there's a learning curve and the end of that i think is similar to eternal where you combo specific enemies with certain combos and you basically don't even bother parrying.

The SSG still does more damage than the normal shotgun but it’s definitely not something you can be using full time like with the reg shotgun since that one gives armor. The designer who thought of doing the opposite of eternal by slowing the game down was huffing his own farts and didn't actually play what he drafted on paper, if he did he'd have realized it wasn't fun. Even with the parry being adjustable it feels unsatisfactory to perform.

Gameplay is definitely a simplification of Eternal while trying to remain a mechanics-dense aggressive shooter, but they do a good enough job of trying to differentiate it in other ways that it doesn't bother me as much than if it had genuinely just been "Eternal but for casuals"

I could not care less about the story at this point and it's more in your face than ever, the minimalism is at this point

The Vehicle sections feel as bloaty as you'd expect but the presentation is fantastic, at least.

It actually feels like the game people claimed Eternal was as far as enemy weaknesses and junk. Fighting a Cyberdemon in this game with anything other than parry spam just doesn't feel good, and other enemies likewise feel like they're demanding you use their singular solution far more than Eternal ever did.

But the gameplay does still feel aggressive, it feels pretty novel within the industry and gutting quickswapping, as much as I don't think I like the effect it had on the game in the end (not being able to quickly swap between weapons sharing a slot does not feel good at all) resulted in individual weapons becoming much punchier, which is nice.

One realization I had that I thought was funny- people complained that burst damage weapons and quickswapping were too strong in Eternal to the point where it overshadowed continuous fire weapons, but I think continuous fire weapons might have genuinely been stronger in Eternal because your stun options didn't require you to stop shooting. In this game the stake gun, ball and chain and the SSG feel like by far the best weapon in most situations because you instantly get a ton of bang for your buck after a melee combo or a shield dash, while the skull gun or linked plasma gun are there if some fodder are in an obnoxious position.

You should distract your girlfriend by getting her to play Doom: The Dark Age while you cook and prepare the omelette.

in eternal I usually use the basic shotgun and plasma gun most of the time. then I use stuff like rockets if I want to AOE or rifle/rockets or whatever. my first run I didn't even use quickswap to bypass animations. What's nice is you can use basically any weapon you like cause you are one chainsaw away from topping up ammo.

Eternal just asks you to be cognizant of your ammo economy (use chainsaw and swap up enough to not get too low on one weapon type in particular) and to remember grenades and blood punch exist to keep bigger enemies locked down. Otherwise it lets you do what you like. You can zoom in, stand at midrange and hose, play from further out, they just want you to change it up every now and then because that's fun.

Dark Ages is unironically a far greater example of forcing you to play the game as it was designed because instead of having the option of throwing grenades to stun enemies or breaking a weakpoint to stop an enemy from shooting you NEED to use the shield or you're going to have a bad time.

Eternal is great BUT you have to play it exactly the way it was designed.

they go down really fast if you have the upgrade that auto-charges the ball and chain on each parry in my experience but yeah cybies are like what people say the marauder is in this game. The design is funny, a lot of things they did make sense through the lens of responding to eternal criticism but other things feel like a stubborn refusal of eternal criticism. It's a lot like ancient gods 2 that way.

and to do damage effectively often you have to wait for the green attacks specifically, whereas in eternal you have mobility and a range of weapons to use, and small enemies to regen health or ammo with.

actually, the red/green stuff reminds me of some nier automata bosses, that shoot orbs. certain ones you cant break with the gun, others you can. but in that it worked because it wasnt just bullet spam. it was a mix of that and melee attacks.

the default one. shreds all trash without having to aim, ammo is not a problem, and shreds large enemies like mancubi instantly from much safer distance than super shotgun.

it was way way worse in 2016, once you got the gauss and turret you never had to look at other weapons. in tda ive only played a bit, but it feels much better on balance. combat and ssg each have their niche, shredder is a better all rounder than assault rifle which was always shit beyond putting fodder into stagger, the bolt mod on it is great but much more situational. i dont like either plasma and they feel like they are gonna just be used for popping energy shields in my game.

if you're making a shooter about aggressive combat it just makes sense to either not have ammo at all or have a way for the player to get it back so they can keep fighting

It’s too much like Doom Eternal Lite. It’s not bullet hell enough. If the Slayer is grounded, enemies should be too and the cacodemons and revenants kill your flow every time. There’s still too many guns.

The story sucks and for all the talk about getting the story out of the codex and into the cutscenes, it leaves the majority of the story in Eternal’s codex AND has more codex.

there's deffo moments like when you finish doin the melee-parry repeat combo against a cyberdemon or the vehicle sections but there's also a really nice groove you sometimes slot into with the combat, and i think its because you are meant to play the game as a semi rhythm game, and just weave shotgun,melee,shield bash, parry and dance between a bunch of targets. some reviews talked about the game clicking for them and i think that is once you realize the rhyhthm of combat and start doing things automatically, similarly to eternal, which is basically the beating heart of the game and not any individual mechanic.

thats how it feels like to me at least. the game is much more fun if i use a shotgun vs. a weapon that you just hold down the trigger for because the fact you can slot the shotgun blast into your "combat mix" easier

This is why the game fails. Hugo Martin criticized Doom 2016 for this which is why they designed Eternal (re-designed it late in development, actually). But instead of replacing the combat puzzles with anything, they didn’t. So the whole experience feels superficial. Enemies have three states - stagger, alive, and dead. It feels too much like an on-rails mobile game.

And it lost the Doom charm. Too serious. So it’s basically not Doom.

I would nerf the offensive capabilities of the shield so you have to actually shoot enemies in a shooter then I would remove the 500% damage taken so armor and hp actually matters, then maybe decrease your damage to 50% and 150% game speed and fast parry/projectile and that would be the only difficulty no customization and the game would be way better

Really weird feeling seeing my own clips on here. Got sick and was allowed to unemployment-max Dark Ages when it first released, going to try to do Ultra Nightmare at some point.
I think the biggest two problems that Dark Ages has are both really fixable. The first is clunkyness with the shield. When you do literally anything in Dark Souls you are locked into that animation and can't do anything else, compared to swinging being cancelable in Sekiro. That doesn't make Dark Souls bad, it just means the combat is supposed to be focused on focus and being careful, not fast paced reaction. Dark Ages clearly isn't trying to do that because you can block while the shield is literally anywhere but your hand and it will immediately teleport to you so that you can block. Yet, firing most weapons often causes a giant delay where you can't block. The super shotgun by default does, but once you upgrade it it seems to stop doing that? (Such as in this clip.) This can cause really annoying fucking moments where you run out of ammo on a weapon and The Slayer physically cannot help himself from switching weapons, making you unable to block and forcing you to get hit by something homing. That wouldn't be a hard thing to fix, just make guns cancelable by the shield, but keep the delay from firing in the background so people don't just shield spam for firerate.
The second problem is the gun Balancing. Doom Eternal isn't perfect, but it's pretty fucking close. Every single weapon has a purpose that gives you a reason to switch to it, and though the mods have unarguable "better choices", they can all be justified. Meanwhile there are so many guns in Dark Ages that are just better in every way to another gun or multiple other guns, most of them don't give you a strong enough reason to use them, meanwhile some have such strong importance that you have to continue using them the entire game. What the actual fuck is the purpose of the first plasma rifle? Genuinely?

I wish the shield wasn't mandatory. I hate the shield. I hate parrying, I hate blocking.

one thing i really don't like is that in eternal i would use every weapon because swapping to everything was fast as hell. quickswapping wasn't the point as much as fast swapping to any weapon was.

i can't do that in this game with the slow swaps and weapons sharing a slot. it feels bad. it's not like it saved auto-fire weapons, burst damage is still king. i'm honestly using continuous fire less because it's clunky to get to them.

If you shoot it long enough, if upgraded, it will have better accuracy. Also, here's a double barreled one that always has pinpoint accuracy, does more damage, damage buffs itself after a few seconds and blows up enemies in a chain. Why would you ever use the first one? The chain shot has an upgrade that makes parries fully charge it for instant full damage shots. I used it for a while thinking it was the perfect boss 1v1 parry tool. Until I realized that the super shotgun just does more damage, since the super shotgun is THE weapon and needs to be the strongest gun in the game. The shredder is cool in concept for clearing waves of fodder, except you're just going to use the starting shotgun because it's the only reliable way to get armor back. By the end of the game, not using the extent of your arsenal is not a player error like it would be in Eternal, it's literally just the meta to stick to three weapons. Shredder should have burning (the shards are literally fucking glowing), the chainshot should do more damage, the plasma rifles need to do fucking somewhat different things.
Besides that, yeah the soundtrack isn't as good. They already fucked up with Mick Gordon, can't get him back, but Andrew Hulshult was great. They did an okay job, but the music is really important for these games. It was a major fuck up giving it to a team like that. People bitch about there not being glory kills, but at the beginning of the clip you can see one. Glory kills still exist, but only falling ones. If you want to see a glory kill animation, sprint (sprinting makes you jump high) then jump, then shield bash. You can launch into glory kills quite often by doing that. Personally I understand them limiting the glory kills, I think it's fine as is. The other problems with the game are more jarring. Despite those problems, I still think this game is pretty good. I like parrying (Sekiro, Sifu, etc) so I can't hate it. Not as good as Eternal, but stronger than 2016.

vehicle combat in most shooters sucks ass and in HL2 they're wise enough to not make that the point of having vehicles. driving them in itself feels good and the loop of driving to place, disembarking and fighting on foot is fine. works well in the final battle of ep2 too

this fight took me like 10 deaths just on regular nightmare + no difficulty mods besides smallest parry window

That's another thing I think is a really easy fix. They should either increase the weapon swap speed, or make it an upgrade you can get. I understand they didn't want to force people to weapon switch as much and were fine with people sticking to a weapon, but they still kept some of Eternal's mechanics in regards to weapons having "counters". The plasma shields still exist and the plasma rifle is still the best way to deal with them. The nail guns seem to be really good at heating shields and armor so you can blow it up, the Chainshot seems like it's entire purpose is to pull it out and blow up an arachnotron's armor then switch to something else, not sit there spamming left click. Not wanting to force people to switch is one thing, but trying to disincentivize by slowing the swap speed even though they left the mechanics that give you really good reasons to switch is retarded and I hope they do something about it soon.

There are a handful of encounters where the difficulty really spikes. I think the first encounter in level 18 and the secret encounter in it are the hardest fights in the game.

I think a lot of it is Eternal is hard if you don't climb to the skill ceiling, but if you use all of your tools you can keep your resources stocked very well. Constant glory kills, flame belching groups and the grapple hook on the super shotgun give you very good ways of getting back resources. I felt like my primary way of getting back resources in Dark Ages was by already being low health then just shooting fodder. You can only get health back from "glory striking" specific enemies, and you get fuckall armor from the shotgun, parry wave or anything else that burns enemies. Getting good at Eternal is using all of your buttons, getting good at Dark Ages has more to do with just following rules, like sticking to the edge of the arena and circling around it.

I miss stuff like "shoot a shotgun sticky at the spider tail to blow it up". most of the time it seems like heat up armor -> shield, or shield -> shoot -> melee.

or cacodemons, you toss an explosive into them and get a glory kill and health.

That's another bit of clunkiness that would be an easy fix. Let's say you're holding the ravager, and you want to switch to the super shotgun, however the currently equipped shotgun is the combat shotgun. You should be able to tap 1 twice and it just go straight to the super shotgun. Why can't you interrupt a weapon equip animation? Instead, you have to watch the combat shotgun pull all the way out, sit there for half a second, then press 1 again. Such a ridiculous problem, hope they realize it's a problem and patch it.

The flail kept me topped up on armor the entire time I was using it up until I switched to the mace.

I still think you should get the flames for the shotgun. It isn't a good source of armor, but it's sadly one of the only ones. The other guy recommended the flail, and to be honest I didn't get the flame upgrade on the flail when I played so I can't rate that.

The green attacks, it's okay to block before the attack comes out if it's close enough. It will still parry. The other attacks that are only blockable usually get me. Don't watch for the glow, watch the pinky. They do a certain movement before they lunch at you, they face straight at you and step back a little.

There is no exploration. They place a giant "SECRET HERE" on your map. You literally can't miss "secrets". They even are detailed on your map in areas you haven't even been to yet.

In the first level you walk forward down a path and come to a fork in the road. You can take the path to the left or take the path to the right. If you take the path to the right you are praised for finding a secret area and there's a "secret key" just sitting there.

I saw people having tons of crashes as well, not to mention there's not even multiplayer this time around.

I've had my series x for 4 years. It's ran silent on every game I've ever played on it. This game makes my series x loud as fuck and incredibly hot. Probably mandatory ray tracing that adds absolutely nothing. The game looks like shit actually. Way worse than Eternal did. And it is only 1440p with variable scaling to 1080p.

Halo CE Legendary is hard because the weapons are ass on legendary and enemies kill you close to instantly so you have to spend ninety precent of your time letting your shields recharge. Halo 2 Legendary dual wield smgs point blank dumping both mags into an elite doesn't kill, if it even breaks his shield. Being good at beating Legendary on Halo is just using the plasma pistol and headshot weapons, and being ridiculously patient and careful.

I've read/watched literally nothing, can someone just tell me, does it also do that Doom Eternal thing of having one single efficient weapon/ability/grenade/execution/etc. "combo" for countering each enemy type, that you're essentially forced (on UV and higher, at least) to just spam ad nauseam every time you fight that enemy, once you learn what it is?

I really didn't like Eternal at all for that reason, after really loving 2016. It just felt overtuned as hell.... I don't think I ever just shot a cacodemon to death the old fashioned way: it basically never made any sense to, mechanically.
