For me, it's the zone based open world. Each individual zone is designed with intended routes, branching paths, and connections to other zones. These paths can be seperated by hard to navigate terrain to keep the player on a semi-linear path, maybe have a few open zones for the occasional big arena battle.
Then the advantage of zone design is that you can give an illusion of a much larger world by abstracting the distance travelled between zones. When it's all 1 map it will inevitably feel very small, when you have seperated zones it feels like you're exploring small but important areas of a much larger world.
And you can still have looping shorcuts and unlockable secret paths that allow you to travel to initially hard to reach zones much faster in the lategame.

That terrain looks very weird, the erosion and shapes suggest it being much much bigger, but when you compare to the player character they're about 3-5 times smaller than they would appear.
