There are games that use EOS (Epic Online Services) to facilitate cross play (not just with Epic but in general), while there's others that require EGS (Epic Game Services) which is an account
EOS doesn't require an account but does automatically install itself in any game that runs it. For example Space Marine 2 installs EOS into your system. Since it uses EOS for cross play. You can literally uninstall it though, and the only potential consequence is that you won't get crossplay. Heck in the example I just gave, you're fine to do so and you can still pair with consolefags (no idea if I can pair with Epic, never got someone, so maybe that's where it's fucked)
But from my understanding, EDF6 actually needed EGS at first before they removed it. This was likely in how they implemented EOS, since there's no reason a Steam game should need EGS at all unlike for some reason Epic decided to release Fornite on Steam or something.
