Yeah true but the problem is dark ages still encourages basically the same thing the only difference is you don't get a fun little satisfaction animation now. They could of just removed the focus on close quarters melee entirely but instead gave us a gimped and less impressive looking version of it. Glory kills are still in but their maybe .05 seconds faster and not as satisfying. Either put them in or don't.

I'd take that at this point over the melee shit they implemented that goes slow-mo on every single individual blow. Fucking hell, someone's already modding that out and the pacing flows a lot better.

As repetitive and unnecessary as glory kills were to the formula, you take it away in favor of a streamlined version and you realize brief breaks were good for keeping a player from wearing themselves out by 100% combat alert all the time. Plus they were a lot more satisfying than just bonking something til it eventually stops being a damage sponge and finally keels over.

Glad I'm not the only one who noticed this. I thought it was because I had "screen effects" turned off because of the whole BLOODY SCREEN YOU ARE LOW ON HEALTH bullshit but I turned it back on and same issue. One time before I had full health and backed myself into a corner by mistake, suddenly out of nowhere my health was sky rocketing down from 150 to like 10 despite none of the demons infront of me hitting me, turned around and there was a zombie in the corner. I don't want big red hit markers or anything but like there was no indication I was being hit, just my health bar randomly going down in 25s

The damage you take by UV/Nightmare doesn't help. It's like jesus fucking christ, I feel like Wolfenstein TNC all over again as some asshole Arachnotron from halfway across the area swiss cheeses you unavoidably and it's hard to tell exactly how much damage you're eating as it covers your screen, but meanwhile some actual enemy projectiles tap you with nary a notice and suddenly you're nearly dead from full health/armor immediately. You can turn on indicators to notify you that projectiles have been fired in certain directions but it's very lazily done and not all that useful in the heat of things.

If I enjoyed DOOM 2016, would I like DOOM Eternal?

Maybe I'm just bad in the brain but this game at ultra-violence feels way harder than Eternal did, I played and finished TAG1 on nightmare yet this is filtering me. I'm dying over and over again because I feel like I have no control over the battles, switching weapons is so slow that I barely do it at all.

I feel like a retard playing it. I can't into the parries, they're not hard to time at all its just that its not what my brain is thinking as I'm playing. I still hit shift constantly to dash and R to use the flame belch as if I'm playing Eternal, I forget that melee is even an option except when enemies light up purple.

It's all so generic. It's the most stock metal thing you'd expect from a different franchise trying to be Doom without understanding the reboot music so far. Never feels like it creates a proper atmospheric noise, just that it is filler using guitar sounds.

Do you want a higher intensity with a game that requires you understand which weapons are best per which enemies at any given moment, swapping and mixing strategies on the fly while having something that's pretty much the FPS equivalent of a fighting game in how crazy later/DLC fights can get, at least on the highest difficulties? Eternal basically iterated on 2016 and then shifted things around quite a bit, so that's up to you to discover if you feel that's up your alley, or if you're like me and prefer 2016's simplicity by comparison.

I just started the game and it feels way better than Eternal. Much more all your weapons work good and you swap to what you enjoy less switch through everything because you're running out of ammo ahh. Much better melee mechanics, love charging star. 2016 did them nearly perfectly. Turn off the stupid "enemy glows neon when you can glory kill them" and force yourself to learn to do it on the fly by enemy reactions and it is fantastic. You don't use them all the time, only when you need to. Eternal took this way too far.

i wont even mention how low res everything looks, textures look straight from 2015, and while the raytraced GI looks great its no replacement from a blurry mess every time you get near a wall

Dark ages trashes the main mechanic that made 2016 meaningfully fun, fast swapping between all of your guns. Seeing gameplay with swapping was the exact moment public perception of 2016 shifted from "looks boring" to "might be sick actually wtf." Every one of my friends that I have shown this game to has said that it looks dull. I have not seen gameplay from anyone make it look more interesting than walking forward with a gun pressing parry and melee. tight design and difficulty isn't absolutely everything. sometimes a mechanic is just fun. dark ages simplifies itself while retaining some of Eternal's ideas but in the process forgot what made nudoom itself in the first place.

They struggle to be cool. They really should had altered enemy hp and numbers with difficulties because right now when a bad player plays Eternal it's just gonna take long and feel boring because they still have to kill the same amount of enemies with same amount of hp than someone on the hardest diff.

Weapon swapping was fine, I just did not care for the grenade swapping and also having a button for armor and another for health. I am debating get gamepass to try this out. I'm running around and parrying when the opportunity presents itself, but I don't feel forced to constantly parry everything. in eternal I always felt a need to shoot all the weakpoints because otherwise I'd be zoned out of lots of positioning options. in dark ages I can move where I want to and generally be safe because I can block attacks or easily stop dangerous demons in their tracks with the shield bash, parry, the shield throw, or melee
I think the big difference is in TDA I'm creating more opportunities vs. eternal where I'm fighting to not get my opportunities taken away

How is this bad? Ditching swap slop is the best thing they could have done. Eternal was build on repetitive patterns that made the game unplayable if you forgot about them. Which is something TAG proved so hard the devs made TDA and focused only on reflexes and using your favorite guns instead of memorizing retarded patterns.

Accelerator is hitscan and really inaccurate. The cycler has no spread but slower projectiles.

Totally get thinking this cause it's actually totally missable. If you execute an enemy from a certain angle usually from an elevated position, it might play a unique glory kill. Doomguy will saw a mancubus in half with his shield for example.

I beat the game on nightmare while barely remembering to use half of my arsenal. The only weapon class I really swapped between was the two spike guns, and I gravitated toward the rail spike near the end of the game because its upgrades were just that good. I guess the SSG is really good, too.
But the GL and accelerator were simply ignored for the entire game. I didn't remember the ball launcher existed until the final boss either.

Why fuck with something that's perfect? TDA is radically different to the point of being lame. Half of your attacks don't even require aiming since there's so much splash damage with the shield and throwing it at targets to stun and using it as a projectile autoaim bouncer. Hell even the shotgun's spread is fucking RIDICULOUS as is the skull gun's spread. None of the weapons are ANY fun.

you probably haven't figured out the combat loop yet. eternal was brutal, first playthrough I got my ass kicked on HMP. I remember I used to play only one or two missions per day because of how much of a headache it was. in TDA I'm breezing through on UV.

No it's not the worst game in existence. There's segments that are enjoyable but for the most part, it's boring and dull. It's not as high paced and fun as Eternal where you get to run, dash, jump, swing, cycle between weapons, and the weapons are perfectly balanced. It's more like block punch block punch block super punch maybe squeeze off a round or two and go back to jabbing. It's literally Doomguy's Punch Out. Even the segments in the fucking mech you are just punching. Hard 6/10.

If you jump before you do the finishers, it's basically the same thing most of the time. I love the one on Hell Knights where you saw their fucking heads off.

this game is the antithesis of the weapon swap thing from doom eternal. you're punished for swapping at bad times

I also think we got a severe overcorrection on Eternal's movement, a single sideways dash would go a long way. Also the game is absolutely not balanced for 150% game speed and max projectile speed. Some of those enemies that throw the slow+poison ground effect down are super annoying to deal with

I actually liked the punch mech parts. That's probably what it feels like to pilot a DNI mech/proto armor. I want more games that utilize smooth, but weighty movement of giant mechs and not just Battletech slowslop.
