That would have actually possibly been an improvement, making his betrayal even more dramatic, like he was just being so nice to fool them. Its a different context. In the original there really wasnt much to cait sith as a character so that was THE moment to have some sort of development. He states that he doesnt understand avalanche because they try to save the world but they dont care about a reward. The narrative needed a reason for cait sith to be allowed with the party so they forced the kidnapping thing, something barret would NEVER forget about, but the game never refers to it again, they dont do anything with it. Its clear it was just a narrative tool to keep cait sith around.
In the remake, this is not needed. When cait sith joins, he asks a lot of questions to the party, trying to earn their trust and/or keep up with the information they know. Barret and yuffie dont buy it and they are like "im sure you a traitor" and stuff. Cait sith learns about what avalanche is going through so despite his job, he has a change of heart. The party as well bond with cait sith and when the betrayal happens, they more are heartbroken than angry. they ACTUALLY trusted cait. And cait leaves the party, so no need for kidnapping. It isnt until he helps the party and begs for forgiveness when hes allowed to join again, but the party still doesnt forget. As cloud says "im still pretty pissed, just got bigger fish to fry".
Sure, they could have kept the kidnapping thing, but that would require far more plotting. Barret or aerith would never allow cait sith or trust him ever again. They would plot to go back to midgar to rescue marlene at some point. Cait sith would need to do far more than just help them with the temple.

To be completely honest, the combat system is somewhat unique and it takes a bit of getting used to. I also made mistakes and didn't learn how to play Remake properly until I actually finished the game the first time.

That said, I did quickly realize that Cloud's <Focused Thrust> is necessary, as it greatly increases stagger, but I didn't realize how helpful charging up Tifa's Chi is until I reached the end game. lol

And by late disc 2, he's basically just a double agent intentionally helping the party and feeding them info from Shinra. I don't think no criticism is valid. Just this notion of it's ruining the original is such a retarded take. I agree the story telling and pacing is messy but once you start detaching it from the original and engage in everything new, it becomes a lot less frustrating.

People say they wanted a remake but at the same time they complain when remake is too different from the original and rebirth is too similar to the original.

I think Sephiroth and the ghosts are handled poorly but when it's framed with the idea of trying to stop fate when the game is constantly dragging you along the path of the original, I feel like it might end up being a more engaging theme than retreading old ground.
