The problem isn't the twist, it's that the game does nothing to resolve the moral implications of destroying the canvas and the people of Lumiere, when act 1 and 2 are entirely about their struggle to live. However they want to have their cake and eat it too so they set all this up but then never address it, and intentionally force Lune/Sciel/Monoco/Esquie out of the final confrontation with the special gommage zone plot device. This is the main cause of people arguing about the endings and feeling dissatisfied.
