Batman: Arkham Asylum (2009)

Playing the original UE3 version of this with max settings, DRM free on a PC handheld is a revelation. The voice acting, the art direction, the tone, the gameplay...it's all just pitch perfect. I don't know if it even needed a sequel.

1-24.jpg - 1920x1080, 211.81K

A sequel could have worked, but it going full open world slop was a mistake.

Yeah, I recently played Arkham City and found it tedious compared to the first game. I guess it's tight enough of xou ignore the side quests but not everytjibg has to be open world, fuck this gay trend

Ahhhhh even the moon has a joker reference GOD DAYUM this series is awesome.

Playing this on release was insane, mainly because everyone just assumed this would be mediocre/shit like most licensed games. Not only was it a fucking amazing batman game, it was just an amazing game period. Back then the combat and metroidvania elements were very fresh also and not done to death like they are now

Yeah, the first one was a Metroidvania, while the others feel like GTA games with a superhero.

The stealth combat in Knight is still GOATed though. The best thing Insomniac did for the Spider-Man titles was rip it off completely.

FPBP
I was so pissed at the time that people were jacking off City. It was Asylum but with way worse design. Fuck the open world meme.

rip it off completely

But not successfully.

Arguably the best thing about this game is the nearly perfect level design, and the fact that they never made another Batman game in this style is a travesty.

Arkham CIty was better in every way THOUGH

After playing City and Knight, going back to Asylum feels like playing a rough draft.

Combat is so basic that multiple enemies can't even attack you at once, they stand around and line up to punch one at a time

Extremely barebones predator mechanics

It's unironically kind of boring to play

There are barely any 3D Metroidvanias made anymore, they certainly aren't overdone. The closest you can get might be soulslikes, but those don't let you explore new areas with upgrades the way AA did.

Just call it backtracking you faggot

It was better in some ways but the smaller scale if Asylum just worked so well. They're both amazing games though.

Retard

You literally get new gadgets that lets you access new parts of the map thoughie, it's a textbook metroidvania

I played the first level or so at a high school buddy's house on Xbox back then. I wasn't really a gamer then and had grown up watching Batman The Animated Series, Batman Beyond, the 1996 Superman series, and Justice League. Hearing Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill in that kind a mature setting was crazy. When I went to college a few years later, I got a PS3. Marvel vs. Capcom 3, Arkham Asylum and Dead Space '08 were the first games I got for it.

Asylum was the last time Harley Quinn's OG voice actress Arleen Sorkin ever did the character, which makes me kind of sad since she passed away within the last two years. I would rather have heard her in the sequels instead of Tara Strong.

When you have an open world game you lose the details a smaller scale linear one has and imo Batman works better with the later one
Not to say AC is bad though, it's a great game and I replayed both a lot

I absolutely hate the campaign of Knight but it has great gameplay, I remember having lots of fun in its challenges

green piss filter

Ruined licensed games forever. Now every game has to be AAA slop

It didn't end up influencing anything like that. License/superhero games were crap before it and are still crap today.

itt: people that haven't played arkham shadow

TO USE TO GO BACK TO OTHER AREAS YOU ALREADY TRACKED.

No Conroy, no buy

Anon Babble no longer unanimously jacking off the open world arkham games and shitting on the first one

boy have times changed.

Going open world didn't change the formula of the games much
Arkham City still follows dungeon styled levels same as Asylum, only this time some locations have one-off encounters like how the church is a single predator level and the court is a single combat level.
Arkham City and Origins' best parts are those kind of levels it had like Asylum did, with City being the muesem and Origins being the hotel

Yeah, the first one was a Metroidvania

I hate to inform you, but Arkham Asylum is as much of a metroidvania as later Arkham games.
You always knew where to go, and were never be forced to go back because you didn't have the right equipment. This only applies to collectables, which also applies to the rest of the series
Arkham Origins Blackgate is the one that's an actual Metroidvania

while the others feel like GTA games with a superhero.

Only for the side missions

I replayed all 4 games last year and I was kinda surprised that City was the one I liked the least. I'm remember disliking Arkham Knight at release but when replaying all 4 games back to back last year I actually liked Knight more than City.

sad-batman.gif - 448x256, 288.7K

I always loved seeing batmans suit get more and more tore up as the game progressed. More games need stuff like that where you're getting scratches and bruises and all other sorts of wear and tear.

True gamers know City is the best

Knight has better gameplay and City has the better story.

In the end, why did Jason bring unmanned tanks? If the tanks had people in them so Batman couldn't just assblast them en masse, he would have lost. It's actually one of the most egregiously contrived plots I've ever seen in any media.

Everyone says PS4 has only one game, but Meta Quest 3/4 is the literal one game machine
I don't think it's worth spending 500+ freedom dollars just to play ONE game that is Arkham Shadow
At least with PS4, I can play more games that aren't just Bloodborne

WB should just pretend like SS is non canon and just make a direct sequel to Arkham Knight with Superman and come up with some magic bullshit to make everyone forget Batman is Bruce Wayne.

alcoholics anonymous Batman looks hilarious, too. AC is literally perfection, AK is graphical perfection.

VR games are all shit gimmick games. Arkham Shadows is only good "for a vr game" its not actually a good game.

How about the Flash time traveling to prevent the events of Arkham Knight?

Knight had the cool teamups, but the Knight reveal was very anticlimactic. Hush being revealed as the Knight would’ve been better than Jason Todd. That one mission where casually Hush infiltrates the WE offices disguised as Bruce would’ve made a whole story of its’ own.

I bought a 5070ti which came with doom dark ages. I replayed mirror's edge and arkham knight on my 1080 just before installing the 5070ti because those games use physx which the 50 cards don't support.

Arkham knight on my 1080 looks better than doom, a cutting edge game running on a $1000 gpu.

eh fuck it whatever i don't even really care what retarded solution they come up with. it doesn't really matter. they should just come up with some hand wavey solution in the introduction like you said about flash going back in time. just have it happen in the intro and move on then with the game having Batman and Superman do cool shit.

What if I told you Hush originally had a much bigger role in the story than what we ended up with?

Dini has written or co-written all of the best Batman content for at least the last 30 years.

Why would they get rid of him?

image-w1280.jpg - 1280x720, 92.01K

Anyone else miss the art style of Asylum? Knight threw it out for a more realistic look and I feel City kind of loses the small details with how the open world is designed. Asylum has a perfect comic book inspired art style. Every location feels distinct, lived in and filled with detail without feeling like clutter.

eh, voice acting got much better from city onward imo - conroy sounded really wooden in asylum and tom kane voiced like half of the cast (doing mostly the same voice too, even though he has plenty of range)

the one sucky thing about knight's graphics is that it has no functional aa and there's noticeable jaggies even at 4k

Get Nintendo Switch port of the collection

flash goes back in time

arrives at point in arkham knight right before scarecrow reveals batman is bruce wayne

defeats scarecrow

batman identity kept secret and events of Arkham Knight still happened minus batman identity being revealed

follow up with sequel from that point

ez pz

Batman with pupils freaked me out. I was so used to white eyes batman.

did you guys stop pretending to be retarded and accept knight is the best of the trilogy?

I dont understand how WB management are so retarded. There was clearly huge demand for another Arkham game after Knight and there still is even today a decade later yet they completely fucked themselves up. How are they so dumb? Even IF they are making another one its going to be 5 or 6 years away from release due to how long shit takes these days. I am in awe of their stupidity.

Knight is too dark in the wrong places

flying around beating random thugs up in Knight was fun

here.jpg - 500x209, 18.58K

It's fun for a goofy comic book game.

The contrarians arrived fast on this one

Because Geoff Johns is a slimy raccoon.

I have played first three Akrham games in order now (ps3 versions) and you definitely should play them in order considering Asylum looks like a slowmo movie and Batman constantly throws his fist in air because he only starts flying at enemies in City if you just press punch + direction. It doesn't mean Asylum bad, but it means they should be played in the order they were released... Of course City had it's flaws too but I still consider it 5/5 because I 100% the game including dlc just a couple months ago. The Cat for example was a pain to travel with because it takes 10 seconds to climb a building even if you press everything in rhythm, however she is pretty fun to do fight challenges as because everything is just so fast and being faster means it takes less time to try challenges etc.

Origins is the first game where everything they tried to do/change was bad and the game is 3/5 only because of things that remained from City. Like it's playable despite the changes they did, but there was no need to play even all the side missions or anything. The maps is just genuinely bad, there's the bridge and stupid barriers even if the place isn't a prison yet. You can fast travel and fly thru the air from high above but you only gain control once you are at the height the developers wanted. Wtf.

Not to mention the skill tree in Origins was genuinely bad. The skill trees are a questionable design choice in any game because it makes it so you are at your weakest at the beginning and then after playing for a couple hours you have plenty of armor and what not, what's the point when you could give the best armor and stealth at the beginning and do the opposite, strip away some privileges and gadgets later? But ignoring that, wtf was the point of you being forced to only upgrade the armor pretty much before special moves and gadgets? You should be able to choose what to upgrade. If you expect to get hit a lot, upgrade armor, if you are confident, upgrade gadgets.

Some people at DC really hate that Batman is so popular.

original UE3 version

what.. does that mean? There's only one version of this game isn't there? or did they do a remake on console or something?

they made a shitty remaster with worse visuals

It annoys the shit out of me when children discover an old game and suddenly think it's the best thing ever.

Also I think I have seen people screech at City's maps being horseshoe shaped because it's a trick to make it seem bigger and I think like "yes" and it works. Plenty other games do it too and it's a good way to make the maps seem bigger (other games might make you travel or drive around a mountain or maybe offer some way thru it too like City does, tho it's not that fast) but in City's case it's not bloated and every single building and street and alley manages to be unique.

Favourite Arkham design? AC's Freeze is still the best design he's ever had. AA/AC also has the best Batman design, Knight's armored suit looks pretty bad.

There's a UE4 version with terrible shaders and post-processing affects that can't be turned off

Rocksteady went from left to right in almost 10 years.

Think there was a ps4/5? remaster version that looked odd and bad in some areas.

Playing the original UE3 version of this with max settings, DRM free on a PC handheld

That era of gaming is so fucking good on handheld PC. Even better when you pick up copies of the game + DLC for $5 or less. I’ve been playing Fallout 3 on my oled deck, and it’s funny to think about how much better it runs + looks than it did on PS3.

Rocksteady

the DLCs were made by WB Games

I dont understand how WB management are so retarded.

They've had Suicide Squad game in the works ever since the release of Arkham Origins (apparent from the post credit scene)
For some reason, they thought it's worth dumping hundreds of million of dollars in live service shit because the Suicide Squad movie got 750 million dollars box office.

The writing on the wall should've been clear that people still care about BATMAN way more than Suicide Squad when you compare between the box office success of The Batman movie and the new Suicide Squad movie (772M vs 168M)

TL;DR: Warner Bros is run by retards trying to force Suicide Squad for the past decade

I get 'nam flashbacks playing Arkham City on launch day

akko smiling.jpg - 497x459, 41.86K

its honestly over for batman games without conroy
i've seen some of the newer animated stuff that uses Jensen Ackles as voice and its bad

care about BATMAN way more than Suicide Squad

And there's 4 games of Batman saturation, the Suicide Squad was bad because after every mission, you were forced into a loot box screen and the grind was insane.

The gaming division at WB is impressively retarded. They'll see their single player games be incredibly popular and sell well while their live service crap fall time and time again and their takeaway from this is "we should double down on live service, cancel the single player stuff".

Knight reveal was very anticlimactic

all those fake leaks

the unabashed insistence of Rocksteady that Arkham Knight isn't Jason

Dude, the Arkham Knight is a NEW CHARACTER, he is TOTALLY NOT JASON TODD, he is ORIGINAL to the GAME'S STORY LINE and he was MADE SPECIFICALLY for Arkham Knight.
Trust me bro!

be me, Jason Todd supervisor

look inside Arkham Knight

it's Jason Todd

Every fucking time, man. The Joker being a factor AGAIN was super annoying, too. They pulled that shit in City, and it fucked with the plot which was actually decent before that.

I mean Arkham Knight
The batmobile segments were total bs

I spent hours and hours doing the fight challanges with every character. That combat system is super fun, I don't know why we don't see more of it.

I'll never understand WB and DC's fucking obsession with trying to shove harley down our throats for the past decade and a half just to try to make her into this oh so super cool girlboss character when she works best just being a ditzy goon to the joker or a low level thug.

Remember seeing Asylum's box art advertised in a comic as a kid and being fascinated every time I saw it

Almost 2 decades later and Asylum's boxart is still one of the best game boxarts ever made. That image of Batman holding his Batarang in the heavy rain is still amazing.

It's all about what the rich investors and shareholders want. Not Rocksteady or the customers. Granted, Rocksteady were hardly innocent. They went woke and got broke.

They went woke

go away retard

See militia outpost

Mixed wave of armed and unarmed grunts

Perch on an adjacent rooftop

Scout out all the heavy units

Disable weapons and crates as necessary

See which gadgets would be useful

Plan route of attack

Throw smoke and fly in

Blast all the VIPs and gun wielders and finish off the melee grunts with gadgets

For me, Knight was unironically the pinnacle of open world gameplay. I haven't played an open world game before or since that let me exploit it to optimize base takedowns as effectively. It was the most "yo I'm actually Batman" feeling I got ever in the whole franchise.

As much as I disliked having Knight focus on the batmobile, I'll give credit where credit is due and say they made the batmobile feel like a wrecking ball in the best way possible. Just driving down a street made it feel like the car was so strong it was ripping the asphalt off the road.

spoiler

storywise it dropped the ball but everything else was so good that I always end up going back

Catwoman, City

Anarky is cool

BAO_Anarky.jpg - 1468x826, 986.14K

They didn't go woke

Sir, you are trapping yourself with an enemy who's got you severely outgunned!

NO, IM TRAPPING HIM

well the Arkham Knight is a new character in the comics and it's even stupider then the game and this was supposed to be the 1000th issue present, Superman got his pants back for his 1000th yet Batman just got shit

Don't get me wrong, I like the suit and his gameplay was fun, but why the absolute fuck did they have to lie about it being Jason?

A Suicide Squad would've been the bee's knees, but what they made... is a pure unfiltered turd.

Is Arkham Origins Copperhead the closest thing of a new character?
It's not THE Copperhead, but it's a brand new character that's called Copperhead

hq720.jpg - 686x386, 68.01K

can you guys fucking believe that arkham knight's graphics were held back cause of the post processing? i recently replayed the game with reshade and post processing off and it was pure goddman heaven, literally no game ever will come close to this

Turning off post processing makes the game look like a flat indie game
You anti-bloom zoomers ruined gaming

Arkham Asylum is incredibly linear, all gameplay exists entirely in tight hallways, progression is always gated and you NEVER explore except to backtrack for collectibles. City is the superior game unless you are an autismo whining about open world for its own sake. I cannot believe that there are people who think the BATMAN fantasy is diminished by being able to explore Gotham City and perch on top of skyscrapers

Hell, Knight has SEVERE fucking problems, but they're almost entirely related to new features no one asked for. As a new interation of the formula started with Asylum, it's the series at its best. It's just too bad they decided to make a tank combat game and shove it into their batman fantasy - all I wanted to do was drive the batmobile not blow up robot tanks

I like the lighting most in the middle

Incredible how they managed to pump out like 5 games with this "gameplay"
It's even simpler than the combat the first Witcher game, and everyone hates that one

This but Devil May Cry or Mario

Why is it always "how come batman doesn't kill the joker" and never "how come the jury keeps letting him off on insanity pleas" or "how come the judge never gives him the death penalty" or "how come none of gotham's infamously corrupt cops ever just execute him" or "how come none of the murderous rival gangsters he's locked up with kill him in prison"? Hasn't batman done enough in delivering the joker unto literally the rest of the entire criminal justice system? This machine is way bigger than just batman. The guy is clearly deeply mentally unwell, how come it's on him to break that last thread of sanity he's clinging to instead of absolutely anyone else in the city acting to finish the job now that it's in their power to do so? "Why doesn't batman kill the joker" faggots are betraying an extremely helpless and cucked mentality especially with regards to their relationship with those in power.

Spamming counters is the shittiest way to play the games and takes too long to beat enemies
Good luck doing that to boss fights and enemies with knives

I'm praying the physx gets fixed for this one day after nvidia's drop in support for that. Arkham Asylum must be preserved in all of it's full glory.

The only solution now is to run a dedicated phsyx card.

Dini also didn't want Joker in it all which was retarded, he should have been the writer

OFFICER BALLS....

I love Arkham Knight's Scarecrow's looks and sound

posting dunkey to make your point

Keep saying it.

They did but it is exclusive to VR. Instead of the Asylum they give you the entirety of Blackgate where you play as Origins Batman. It would've made a good flat screen game

Batman would've just found a way around it as he always did. At least you lose no men from having unmanned tanks which are more valuable than AI drones.

yeah he has no problem disabling cars that have people in them in that same game. he shoots a special round that disables the vehicle and knocks out the person inside. so maybe he shoots some special electric round at the tanks that both disable and knock out the guy inside.

you can magic in whatever ability you need to for the character

You ruined the atmosphere. It looks like that shitty Gotham Knights game now

This is a considered a piss filter

Thank god you had nothing to do with creating the visuals of Arkham Knight. Gotham isn't supposed to look like a generic colorful city at night. Gotham is supposed to look suffocating like pic related - filled with smog and rain drowning out the city's lights and colors. It's supposed to look miserable.

you have absolutely shit taste. the vanilla looks 10 times better thatn your oversaturated and contrasted reshade. objectively

yes it it considered a piss filter, and it's a dogshit one that diminishes the intended artstyle, turning off the artifical bloom and light enhanced the atmosphere of the game tenfold for me

it's weird to me people wank arkham knight so much when it's the worst out of all the games
