I finally got around to playing Ultimate this year and it was LITERALLY just Smash 4 with extra characters and a few gameplay tweaks, like based on the way people talked about it at release I thought it was something completely new

So what happened? I haven't heard anything of Melee since that Hax guy offed himself because of Leffen or whatever.

I played Ultimate on release, went straight into world of light on hard, and got my ass handed to me by the first CPU I fought because of how different the game felt coming fresh off the heels of 4.

I played ult for maybe 2 hours before I got bored and dropped it. I don't like hitting something feeling like stretching a rubber band. I also hate the EPIC presentation style where everything is EPIC and awesome and EPIC music and EPIC freeze frames and it's so EPIC.

To me it's faster enough that it feels different from Smash 4 and hits that sweet spot between the latter and Melee. Fuck Brawl.

Okay? What do you want me to say, that you're making up this story? That has nothing to do with the objective qualities of the game. The game looks extremely similar, most of the character models are the same or have very minimal alterations, most of the stages are the same down to the models and textures, the engine is the same, the physics are the same, etc. Most of the gameplay differences are down to adjusting parameter values in how the engine works, mostly how far the attacks launch you. Outside of the totally new stuff, which makes up maybe 10-15% of the game's content, you could have probably implemented all but one or two of Ultimate's gameplay mechanics in Smash 4 with a basic developer console.
The only big " from the ground up" alteration that I could spot was the way the air dodge works. It's a lot more like a "Super" /"Arcade"/"Scholar of the First Sin" edition of Smash 4 than a new game proper, I don't even think it's a ripoff considering there's a lot of new content(although a lot of it is paid DLC so it doesn't really count toward the value proposition), it's just telling how much people want to rationalize liking the new thing that they acted like Ultimate was some totally different thing from what they had been shitting on immediately prior
