I think paid early access puts off more people from buying it than they make from the extra money. No idea why devs keep doing it. The only exception is if it's an MMO or something. The strongest marketing it day 1 where everyone on the internet is talking about the game and I think most people who see that they can't play unless they pay an extra $20 will just move on and forget about it.

2016 was good and started the Doom hype. People expected the same thing when they bought it but got scammed instead. This time they knew what to expect so they didn't fall for it twice.

2016 had incredible legs from positive word of mouth and people who liked it flooded into Eternal.
Eternal was and still is polarizing because the gameplay was a departure from 2016 with a sharp learning curve. The people who bounced off Eternal are leery about this new entry and the people who loved Eternal are pissed that Dark Ages threw Eternal's core gameplay into the trash.

Doom Eternal was a million times better than Doom (which was a boring, one-note piece of shit); this new one is probably better than Doom as well.
