a lot of old PC exclusive games like Fallout, Thief, Arcanum etc are far more mature than games made today, their worldbuilding, themes, characters, writing and basically everything are miles ahead of what came after

Yeah, I do feel like the old Fallout aesthetics were partially influenced by the industrial aesthetics used throughout the 80s and 90s. Just that mixed with art deco really. Bethesda really missed the point where the "world of tomorrow" stuff wasn't the sleek and clean 60s vision of the future. That was just used in commercials and propaganda when the actual prewar world was an industrial hellscape.
Games, even the nerds of the past, were masculine compared to today. Look at old ID, Doom was heavily influenced by D&D (genre that only had men and were for men, said by Gaiger himself even though he let his daughter play and even admitted to saying that men should have higher strength than females), guns and heavy metal (The most masculine genre in existence). Gaming was a boys club. Everything went to shit when D&D also went to shit which was a change in the zeitgeist heavily influenced by money and politics. So everything got faggotized, females were now catered to which meant the shit that men find cool, like dark graphics, blood, guns, heavy metal, had to go. Development philosophy also changed with less complex mechanical abilities and more streamlined approach were introduced.
