I like both FL and RF
I've only played FL on 3DS though for clarity
FL has the aesthetics of a RF/HM/Stardew style game but fundamentally does not function as one. Its closer to something like Runescape than it is to RF, but with RF stuff sprinkled in. It is very charming, with cute characters, life sim elements, etc. But the focus on that life sim stuff just isn't there in the way it is on RF 3 or 4. The characters are far less of a big deal to the game, the interactions aren't as interesting, there's no romance, etc. I said it in the last thread and I know some people disagree but Fantasy Life (at least the 3DS one) is Runescape wearing the skin of something like Rune Factory. This is not an insult though! its a cool hybrid that I enjoy. It has enough of the small town life sim stuff to feel really soulful and cozy, while having the autistic grind of something like Runescape. I understand Rune Factory also has similar leveling but its more about what each series focuses on and how deep those systems go.
However, if you liked RF4, play RF3 better in some ways, worse than others, but is a lot of people's favorite (it blatantly has better characters). Consider FL, because its also great (and this new game sounds even better) just understand its not really competing with RF even though they share similar features. Also in my experience RF goes way farther with combat/dungeons. FL is a bit generic in comparison.

I like rune factory but after seeing the previews and playing fantasy life for a few hours today I can at least tell you rune factory won't match up to the polish of FL at all. The only thing it will really have over FL is romance stuff.

i've been playing mage while doing the story and i haven't really had any issues so far, though i also haven't played any of the other combat lifes at all yet so my opinion's probably a bit skewed.
SP management hasn't been that big of an issue so far. the charge attack is most useful against groups (and enemies that can be staggered in general, though to a slightly lesser extent), and meditation can help with SP management when you remember it exists, especially when you get the thaumaturgy upgrade for it that makes it reduce SP costs by like, 75% instead of 25% or whatever.
