Windows is getting really spotty about compatibility. Linux typically has someone who really wants to make something work out of autism, but Windows will drop and block entire features if the maintenance costs don't look like they're worth it.
The only way to get support for Windows Mixed Reality headsets is to either stay on Windows 10 or move to Linux, since Windows 11 has simply dropped support. I'm not suggesting that WMR has good drivers on Linux, but it is outright blocked on Windows.
It's really just Arch that railroads you into a handful of packages, there's never a real reason to get hyped about Valve software when they will always choose the laziest form of continued maintenance. Just get CachyOS or Endeavor if you can't be bothered to run archinstall.

You only maybe need to learn the one for your distro. Usually you can just use a GUI application named "Store" or "Discover" or whatever and have it do everything for you.
There's only 3 big main ones all other distros are based off of anyways: Debian and apt, Arch and pacman, Fedora/Red Hat and DNF. The only exceptions are small distros you probably shouldn't be using OR atomic/immutable distros which you *should* be using but in which case you either using the GUI application or read the documentation.

i've migrated many times early in my linux journey but I keep coming back to arch nonetheless. You can't beat the wiki in helping you with avoiding social contact.
Use Proton 10. The issue was in Proton 9, I've not crashed in Proton 8 or 10.
Honestly, I fell for the Linux FUD for years before using the Deck's desktop mode and finding out that it's just as easy as Windows to do all the shit I need to do.
Only issue is learning to navigate the filesystem to find things like save data and the like, but a lot of that is handled through Wine or other programs (Heroic Game Launcher has been great for importing my GoG games), and that's super easy to navigate anyways.

i've been using manjaro for several years now most of my system problems have been the standard PC gamer fare, worst i had was having to repair an install when i had a system update hang and i had to restart but that was easy enough to fix by reinstalling my package manager from a live usb and running a system update.

At the time this was filmed the bug was already fixed, and if he had followed the standard post-install or update instructions to sync with the remote repository first he would not have been able to reproduce the issue.

All this mess about installing shit being a pain in the ass stems from the 80s when nerds figured out you could save a kilobyte by using dynamic libraries, which just means that instead of a program containing everything it needs to run, it will piggyback off whatever libraries your system has installed. Of course this leads to a shitstorm of incompatibilities and difficulty making everything play nicely together, but the system is held together with duct tape and only breaks down completely a few times which is good enough for the unpaid freetard with enough time on his hands to deal with it when it comes up.
Your distro's package manager usually does a good job of not killing itself for the apps it offers (except in Pop OS's case), but nowadays more apps come in flatpaks or appimages, which contain everything they need to run, like how windows figured out 40 years ago. Appimages are simple double click and it runs, but flatpaks need to be installed and are fuckhuge (like 3GB for a calculator) but has some shared library magic where it will see if it actually needs to install everything or if it can use an existing library on the system.

Wine isn't a hardware emulator. It is a win32 compatibility layer for UNIX-like OSes, not too different from Microsoft's win32 compatibility layer for NT, except that Wine is actively maintained for the purpose of gaming, while Microsoft's compatibility layer is only intended for business software.
If you find a win32 compatibility issue for a game, you can submit a ticket to Wine and it will get fixed. Microsoft no longer does this for their compatibility layer. When Microsoft stopped supporting games on their DOS compatibility layer, games shifted over to using DOSbox over Microsoft's solution. Valve is ultimately moving to using Wine everywhere because they want to ensure PC games work regardless of Microsoft's indifference.
The one sticking point is that Wine doesn't provide compatibility with the NT kernel, which is why Kernel level Malware that exploits NT doesn't work on Linux based systems.
unironically I tried using Bazzite because I day 1'd the 9070 XT and holy shit it's such a good operating system. The last time I used fedora was in 2008. SELINUX rules. Drivers work out of the box. Its more secure than my ubuntu/mint installs. Highly recommend.

It comes installed with TOOLBOX for isolating repo stuff you install and DISTROBOX to run "virtual machines" "natively". Everything else is meant to be installed as a flatpak. It's freaking great. This is the disto noobs should start with. Its safe, and they will learn more having to navigate around SELINUX and all the walled off underthehood stuff.
I've been using Bazzite for months and it runs my games better than Windows on my shitty old 970.

Apt tried to install the next best thing and it was the native steam package from ubuntu's own repos. There isn't a world where the native package manager wouldn't nuke the desktop due to ubuntu's repos not being compatible with poop.

Also MacOS X is not Linux, it is a BSD UNIX, and while it is genetically distinct it does handle system software not too differently from some Linux distributions.

Steam Deck is simply the first Linux system in a while to really threaten the Microsoft hegemony. There were similar fits thrown by Microsofties about Android/Linux computers early on. Eventually most stats simply added a separate category for Android/Linux so they could pretend that Android wasn't a Linux distribution, and that ARM personal computers somehow didn't count (unless they use Windows).

Red Hat sells their services, and it's not even a competition, Azure runs on Linux, iCloud runs on Linux, AWS runs on Linux, and the future is cloud-native; Linux has already won.

dwm is the compositor, window manager and display server all at once. you only need parts of explorer for a functioning desktop, and it can run with explorer being killed

Technically Microsoft didn't make any of their platforms either, they simply conned IBM into paying them for a quick and dirty DOS they bought, and NT is just a legally distinct VMS clone made by former DEC employees.
There is nothing new, and ultimately Microsoft's mistake with VMS / NT has cost them billions of dollars as the rest of the world sped past them building off of modern UNIX based platforms.

It is when it involves paying Red Hat hundreds of thousands if not millions to have built Azure in the first place and continuing to pay the Linux foundation half a mil every year for platinum membership and having to share their source code because of GPL-2.0.
It's probably a good thing that Microsoft were too scared of an anti-trust case to buy Red Hat like they originally planned to, since their management becomes increasingly more retarded the more important the project becomes (hence why Windows and Xbox are garbage yet the Zune HD and Surface line are great).

Windows emulation and broken bumpers that are being used less than regular troonix on steam? It's really a tough call.

It's a good entry level device.
I game on a laptop, it's ok for the most part but one of my favorite games is Kenshi and it runs at 20fps at best, and I'd like the option to play more modern games. I want a gaming pc at some point. The only thing that concerns me is price, but I see the Deck might be a cheaper option.
You should just save up, there isn't much of a difference between a laptop and a steam deck unless you're playing in public.

Linux sucks but the sad truth is that windows is starting to suck even more. There's only so much lag and so many ads and forced online accounts you can take before you either shell out for a mac or install linux. This being Anon Babble, at least linux can play games so mac isn't an option for us.
Linux is approaching a usable state if you're not forced to use programs it can't run. Just keep Windows around for that, and only that.

Does anybody's Linux setup work 100% with absolutely no problems that you have to work around? My system only has "one" issue that I have to deal with to this day. Suspending my PC, going to "sleep mode", doesn't work the typical way from the start menu. I have to run sudo pm-suspend for it to go to sleep properly. If I use the one from the start menu, the computer will sleep for 0.1seconds and then power back on.
Mine, unless you count having to use rpm os-tree to layer a package a workaround because something I wanted to install doesn't exist as a flatpak or a brew.sh

mint. there are caveats to that though. it isn't a fresh install on this hardware, I carried it over from my old PC and it's Mint 21.1. It would probably be "perfect" if I did a fresh install of the newest version of Mint, but that would be way too much trouble. I don't want to reconfigure everything.
