Specifically regarding the pleasure cube, we could consider the desires of a person weighted across time. Suppose that the time traveler girl is indifferent to a life of drug-mediated bliss vs the exact same neurological cocktail produced through genuine adventure *while actually experiencing said drugs*. From the standpoint of the version of her after she's started taking the drugs, there's no problem. But from the perspective of her past self from before starting the drugs it might seem like something's wrong. A technologically mature society should be able to account for both value systems - the present/future perspective which wants a life of bliss and the past perspective which desires some innate 'interestingness' or 'purpose' or some other criteria unfulfilled by a pleasure cube existence - by carefully and deliberately crafting actual real-life adventures that the time-traveler girl can go on which would satisfy both the desired neurological states and the other values.
