He's a good character, I agree. I think the issue was that in 2012 it was really obvious that it was an attempt to pander to the CoD audience. But the CoD audience isn't a bogeyman any more so that context is sort of starting to become forgotten. What he represents was difficult for a chunk of the gaming audience to ignore. Just like how there are plenty of characters these days who are meant to pander to different groups, the meta aspect of what the studio is trying to do is hard for many to look past.
