Cata through WoD. Legion is where nu-wow started but people suck it off because they blew their wad packing the entirety of their biggest bad guy faction into 1 xpac and introducing artifact power. Wotlk and tbc is just slightly different vanilla and slightly more tuning so not everything is fundamentally unusable. Vanilla is vanilla

there are new quests in every zone, new areas and loot in some classic leveling dungeons like deadmines and SM, new full zones like gilneas (late 30s to late 40s) with new 5 mans. the devs just released a road map that includes more new leveling zones as well as more pre and post naxx raids. also, all talent trees have been reworked - some very slightly (ex. frost mage barely changed), some got a full rework (ex. subtlety rogue is now a raid support class). it's worth checking out if you're jonesing for the classic feel with a fresh coat of paint

Vanilla is the only version of WoW, where they didn't know what they were making so they made the meat of the game leveling from 1-60. Once they realized what retains players, Burning Crusade and onward were focused on the endgame. You will never have a meaningful gear progression like Vanilla again.

I only ever cared about the PvP aspect of the game, which was best during Wrath, stopped being as fun during Cata, became somewhat fun during MoP again and was never good after.
The amount of content jam packed in Vanilla is like 10:1 ratio for leveling and endgame. Future expansions were like 1:2 or 1:3.

The games PvP peaked before battlegrounds when everyone was still learning how to play the game and the people who learned how to use their mouse to move while using hotkeys were dominating everyone winning all the PvP battles over rich arcanite and devilsaurs

no that was around patch 1.5 before the big threat rework to the game, back when warriors tanked sword and board in 5 mans and people actually used CC in 5 mans in vanilla wow.
I vividly remember needing CC in TBC heroics and I also remember waiting a bit before attacking shit so I didn't steal aggro

Thats tbc for you. Most mobs would one shot the dps if they pulled aggro unlike in vanilla where you can just sit there for a while and take a beating. Tbc is most fun I have had in wow and im honestly considering paying Blizz if they release tbc again

You're in luck, TBC servers are already confirmed. They currently released Anniversary servers that will transition to TBC in winter. The PvP server even has forced faction split (49:51) so it'll be interesting to play unlike the previous iteration where they quickly turned mono-faction
