Hunger is not inherently bad but it is poorly implemented and should have been updated years ago. It can be made way, way more engaging with simple mods like Farmer's Delight which add a ton of new plants, recipes and buffs from food that requires more effort to produce. As it is, you just walk into a village, steal all their hay and just keep up with the 'annoyance meter' for the rest of your playthrough via 2 stacks of bread.
