At least the anime showed Smasher for what a fucking nightmare he is. Didn't even break a sweat taking out a team of edgerunners including a borged-out David.
FUCK YOUs being demoted to laughable NPCs is always a major fuck up in TTRPG adaptations.
Did you like him as Johnny?
Shit anime, shit miserable plot. I am convinced that anyone who genuinely enjoyed it is either a masochist or a sadist, torturing themselves or witnessing the misery of othersand liking it. Fucking weirdos.
literally every single thing that makes David unique, Smasher is better at, it was flat out impossible for him to ever win
And that's how you should do Smasher
It's a difficult thing to do in TTRPGs as well.
At heart, TTRPGs are about total player agency. You can really make any decision you want within the realms of the rules/laws of physics etc. You may not succeed but you can try.
This is often misinterpreted by PCs that they should always have a *chance* to win whatever scenario they're placed in. So in the case of Smasher you could have a group of PCs who want at least a puncher's chance to take him down, like a 1/1000 chance. When in reality he'd just curbstomp any PC. But as a GM you're kinda torn cause just saying "Well, it's Smasher, you're all dead" isn't the right path either.
So you're dead right when it comes to videogame adaptations - people play them because they KNOW they can win, and it feels like a rugpull when they can't. What I'd have preferred is V fighting Smasher but the conclusion being more like it was in 2023 with a nuke or whatever going off and leaving the fight unfinished.
Experiencing things other than "POG HE IS HIM AURA FARM FR FR" is good to develop as a person, anon
Out of interest, at what point do you feel a story transitions from a tragedy into just misery porn?
I would argue Edgerunners is at heart a tragedy, not just misery for misery's sake.
in the TTRPG there are ways to win from Smasher and that's intentional, he's not a god, he's just the best at what he does
That said the usual way to win from him is to basically collapse the entire god damn building on him, with your entire crew dying in the process
By virtue of being a cyberpunk universe no single enemy is actually unkillable on the level of Caine
Playing/watching this kind of put Blame! into perspective for me. The Silicon Life are basically a whole species of Adam Smashers, it really makes you appreciate how much of a hardcase Killy is. I still don't get Toha Heavy Industries, I was hoping there would be something about it in the anime especially when bits of their tech started showing up. Maybe in the second season?
I disagree. Every time I watch or read a story like Edgerunners I feel like I want to strangle the writers to death, and intensifying that feeling can't be healthy or help me develop as a person.
When a character I like dies.
2004
Anon what the fuck do these things have to do with each other
Yeah, in the grand scheme of things, even though David was exceptional, he was still a high level street thug. Really puts things into perspective. Cool thing is they're planning on making the Edgerunners show be like an anthology series where they have a different story per season that follows a different person or group. All will most likely end in tragedy or a on a dark note.
When a character I like dies.
Congratulations anon, you officially have less tolerance for drama in media than a 5 year old child
Its pretty fun. So is the anime.
I'm kinda hoping they do the thing where all characters have minor appearances in other character's stories
Stupid whore got pwnzored. The fate of all roasties
All will most likely end in tragedy or a on a dark note.
That's the ultimate point of cyberpunk: shit sucks and it's going to get worse.
Still hoping for an old-net group, fucked up internet schizo viruses that can destroy people with ease is a nice concept.
characters have minor appearances
That'll probably be Falco.
Probably the hardest most canon official Guro of a beloved character
That's the ultimate point of cyberpunk: shit sucks and it's going to get worse.
Not necessarily, part of good cyberpunk is that there "are" ways out and it isn't all inevitable, but what happens to characters is ultimately the result of their choices
it's not grimderp
What? It was obvious. She's the red spy. Watch she'll turn red any second now.
When a character I like dies
Can't argue with that.
All will most likely end in tragedy or a on a dark note.
Good. The whole fucking point of Cyberpunk is that choice between going out in a blaze of glory or quietly fading away, and the fact that these protagonists constantly choose the former due to the very nature of NC itself warping your perception of what is good/right/necessary.
oh no I meant more like the main character of one anthology shows up in the background of another
adam smasher specifically isn't a FUCK YOU though, he's just a really skilled solo (not even the most skilled in universe)
cyberpunk doesn't have FUCK YOUs in the ttrpg sense
Congratulations anon, you officially have less tolerance for drama in media than a 5 year old child
That is probably true, I can see it taking more than 5 years to develop masochistic interests.
I consume stories to be entertained, and watching characters I like getting killed does not entertain me, it only makes me furious.
good song forever tarnished by tranime niggers
I agree, there is also room for other kinds of stories where some try to escape the system and end up being eaten alive by it before being able to escape or highlighting the corruption and power dynamics at work, etc. Cyberpunk is just such a rich genre, lot to work with.
it depends, generally speaking if you fuck up to the point Smasher gets dumped on you without any warning, your DM is giving you an elaborate "game over"
if you actually know in advance that the extreme risk job you have is extreme risk because Smasher's waiting, that's generally when you get given a chance to be clever and possibly beat him, low odds though, and you're not getting out without at least 1 flatline
fpbp
if your ref dumps smasher on you without warning, you have a shit ref
Yeah it'd even be super cool if they some stories indirectly interact with each other a la Pulp Fiction. Maybe even culminating in some season where all the stories thus far turn out to be b plots to a main plot that was unraveling in the background which becomes clear as the season unfolds.
The recent comic anthology series for Cyberpunk 2077 had some great stories. The first one about MaxTac was the absolute banger.
tl;dr MaxTac are forced to protect a Solo who's in over his head on a massive job but is also a Platinum Insurance holder.
Depends, but I get you.
One time in another game system, we had kinda ignored a plot point the GM had teased us with a couple of times. Then in the endgame a fucking demon-possessed elf just shows up and we're like "Where the fuck did this come from?" and the GM had to tell us "Well remember that part with the mysterious boat at the harbour? Yeah you kinda ignored that and the other 3 clues and this is the result".
So there's an argument for getting shit dropped on you when you're a retard.
well, unless you tried trolling Arasaka by uploading 50 petabytes of dolphin porn on their mainframe, or did something similarly incredibly stupid
What's the series called? I think I've seen some references and pics every now and then but didn't realize it was a whole thing.
That one is called Cyberpunk 2077: Trauma Team, but there's about 8 or 9 of them now. XOXO is another banger.
readcomiconline<dot>li/ Comic/ Cyberpunk-2077-Trauma-Team
There's also room for a big payout, getting the girl you like, retiring rich and living a long happy life. Unless of course the writers insist on making the plot miserycringe, of course.
to be fair, that usually isn't a fun story, except for maybe as a juxtaposition
usually though you don't get the girl, the big payout and the long happy life
you get the medium payout, you know, the one before the big payout, still enough to let you live a long happy life with the girl you like on medium payout money
It's the suckers that go for the big payout instead of taking their cut and bailing when that cut is enough that get chewed up by the setting
There's also room for a big payout, getting the girl you like, retiring rich and living a long happy life
Then I think you misunderstand the genre.
NC itself is infectious in how it warps your perception of what is considered a "good" life. A certain percentage of the citizens are infected by this attitude which prioritizes and amplifies the typical "American Dream" into something utterly destructive to everything it touches. Some end up as gonks or booster-jocks, just wrapped up in meaningless violence and drugs and implants. Others become Edgerunners and burn out looking for their "big score". Those that do get their wish end up hollowed out by it, either falling into self-destructive degenerative lifestyles, or looking to get an even bigger score, convinced it isn't enough. Because the kind of person who is looking for their "big score" isn't the kind of person who is happy or fulfilled once they get it.
there's also the people in NC who get caught up due to circumstances/debt/etc. and occasionally among those you have the ones that make enough money and still have enough common sense that one day they just quit and started a new life over in Europe
the ones who can pull out at the end, those are the real winners
I have no problem with that, jingle the gambler's dilemma in my face, but make it possible to succeed. Giving players the option to retire early or go for double or nothing with almost impossibly unfair odds would be peak.
not just gambler's dilemma
I will jingle this way out in front of players: "you can leave, but you gotta erase your old identity and your rivals will claim the fame for everything you did"
"Or, you can take on this last mission, and be legends, win or lose"
your rivals will claim the fame for everything you did
Oooooooooooooooo. That would fuck my PCs up something fierce.
there's also the people in NC who get caught up due to circumstances/debt/etc
There's a comic of this called Cyberpunk: Blackout which deals with a BD repairman who just wants to use the technology as a psychological tool to help people. Through circumstance they end up owing their employer a huge debt and have to go down a fairly dark path to pay it.
Why would they have to erase their identities?
I really don't care what the masses are like and how the common person has a skewed perspective. It's my character, I get to define their personality. If you force me to put a personality chip in my head or drop a rocks fall everyone dies I'm going to hit you with a wrench.
it's a common bait for PC's but one that keeps working, what do you value more your life or your legacy
works on a meta level as well because either way, that PC is never getting played again, if they erased their identity and moved to greener pastures well, they're no longer PC material
so for the player it's basically a choice between an exciting ending or a happy ending, but it's an ending none the less
Why would they have to erase their identities?
Usually by the time you hit it big you've made some powerful enemies, enemies that could and would just hunt you down even a decade later and drag you back
It's my character, I get to define their personality
No-one is saying you can't do that. I'm just saying that the genre of Cyberpunk doesn't really concern itself happy endings, even if that's what you seek. But you do you in your own game.
The funniest thing was watching those slags try and miserably fail to sing this song outside of a studio after it blew up.
tranime
Leave.
can't have a pornstar dick
can have big boobs but no way you can't because all shirts reset chest size to the default
That's what mods are for, retard. Don't tell me you're some kind of fucking peasant playing on a console
But they have only hit it medium by that point. Still a good idea to get a clean slate though.
That is not only what I seek, it's what I demand.
But they have only hit it medium by that point.
Hitting it medium still means that you've at least pissed off a gang or some lower totempole exec and there's people who know your name, know your face and know what you did
Even if not to punish you for it, maybe you've successfully hacked into a place and 2 years from now, someone else needs to find "someone" who can hack into that place and isn't going to accept a no
And the medium people who you've made enemies out of, well some of them might make it big and remember you while they're big but before they crash
basically, you don't get to lead a happy life as a "somebody" in this universe, you need to be a well-off "nobody"
it's what I demand.
If you're talking about TTRPGs, then I don't think you're a very good participant.
If you're talking about videogames, then you can't really control that at a fundamental level.
somehow I don't think he's ever played TTRPG's
different systems for different stories and signing up to play in a certain system and setting implicitly agrees to a certain story
and plenty of TTRPG's out there that are designed to facilitate happy endings, hell D&D 5e is pretty much the designated happy end simulator, it's why you have death saves
Very smackable ass
tranime is dogshit
Video games are for trannies too. When's that egg gonna crack so you can join us?
How do I get my Cyberpunk character to look like this?
Yeah I don't disagree that it's a good idea to get a new identity but if you force it on your players you're a shit gm.
I don't mind TTRPGs having a chance of failure. If I fail, I'm just going to make a new character. Tabletop games are not about stories for me, it's about doing goofy stuff with my mates.
Books, series and movies having tragic endings is not particularly bad, it just makes them shitty stories, and I can just read plot spoilers and avoid those stories. But a CRPG having only shitty endings is unforgivable, as you could simply write in additional endings that should always include a happy end. It doesn't matter if it's hidden, locked behind esoteric specifics or just nigh impossible to achieve, but as long as it's possible I'm willing to spend a hundred hours extra to reach it.
That's what makes 2077's story particularly egregious, there is absolutely no reason to have V dead or powerless no matter what the player does. I remember the first time I finished the game, I got the Avocado ending with Panam, felt let down and cheated, and went to look up all the possible endings and discovered that they all were even worse. CDPR made it firmly on my shitlist then and there.
And then they reeled me back in with the DLC and that particular story had no right to be as goddamn awful as it was. Still fucking livid thinking about it.
Tabletop games are not about stories for me, it's about doing goofy stuff with my mates.
and that's fine, there's tons of systems for this, Cyberpunk just aint that system
It's a TTRPG made for people who're wiling to accept their PC probably isn't getting any kind of ever after
Yeah I'm not a masochist so I don't play 2020 or red. I have played Shadowrun though, which is the clearly superior cyberpunk setting.
Books, series and movies having tragic endings is not particularly bad, it just makes them shitty stories
What's inherently wrong or "shitty" with tragic or fatalistic narratives aside from the fact that it hurts your feelings?
In regards to 2077 specifically, you're told in the first hour how it ends. You either go out in a blaze of glory, or quietly disappear. Then when the game ends, those are the choices you're presented with. Every ending is a variation of that theme. You want your quiet life? Take Hanako's or Reed's deal. You wanna see what lies beyond this mortal coil? Give your body to Johnny. You want to forge ahead and rail against the dying light? Go out east with Panam. You want to go out a fucking legend? (Don't) Fear the Reaper, baby.
Sorry, Gally is the only cyberloli for me. She would have gutted Smasher like a fishe too.
He didn't gather the seven chooms and unlock the true ending.
They're unfulfilling, unsatisfying, frustrating and sad. All negative, unpleasant emotions that one would much better do without. I'm not a masochist, so I don't enjoy torturing myself.
They said that in the beginning, but unless you read plot spoilers, by the time you actually find out whether it's true, you can no longer refund the game. I don't want to choose between shit ending A, B, C and D, I want the one that actually feels good to reach.
For all its faults, I do have to give Cyberpunk credit for teaching me to never preorder and never buy without reading a plot synopsis first. And thanks to that, I've already saved hundreds of yuros, the last of which being the 50 I would have put in Expedition 33. So fucking glad I dodged that bullet.
Hey, is this Lizzie's bar?
I'm looking to buy every single BD you have of this girl called Rebecca? Heard she worked here? No no i'm not into teenage girls i'm just a fan that's all haha i promise :)
I feel you. I own Cyberpunk 2077 via pre-order and I loved the cyberpunk genre at the time I got bored of that game so quickly. Even when they got back and fixed the game I just couldn't get into it. People say Phantom Liberty is good and I WANT to actually play this game I was hyped for that people now rave about and I just can't do it. It's weird since I really really enjoyed Edgerunners, despite the extremely sad ending, but Edgerunners honestly made me dislike 2077 even more because the character in 2077 aren't this cyborgnetic monsters beating the shit out of each other with multiple eyes, extendo fingers, white skin and weird hair colors and fucked up eyes except a few select NPCs. I enjoyed the Ascent more than Cyberpunk 2077, at least I played the Ascent all the way to it's end.
Fair enough. Thanks for contributing.
It should be noted that the final Story Mission of the last CP2020 Expansion book (Firestorm Shockwave) was the 2023 Arasaka Tower Raid, and it's set up so no matter what, Smasher is waiting for your party on the Roof. And you HAVE to deal with him before the Chopper shows up, otherwise he just shoots it down and it's Game Over.
So yeah, Smasher isn't full on "Rocks fall everyone dies fuck you" mode, he is just a very, very difficult fight.
Eat my dick.
youtube.com
I hated Phantom Liberty way more than the base game, actually. I felt like my hands were way more tied, I was forced to sit by as other characters made decisions for you such as killing people you went out of your way to save, the plot asked you to put experimental tech in your head AGAIN, only this time designed by people who have been shown getting rid of loose threads in a heartbeat and once the big reveal happens and it turns out you were being mislead and taken advantage of all along, you don't even get the option to seek revenge right then and there and put a bullet in the korean whore's brain. It was a literal miracle that I managed to finish the entire thing, probably only to try the shiny new ending. Except if you go with it you become so weak you can't fight off even the most pathetic of muggers because reasons and all of your friends and contacts tell you to fuck off.
I absolutely hate tragic endings, that much should be clear by now. But in the case of PL, everything felt so forced, so utterly contrived, that I would have been tearing my hair out if I hadn't already gone bald in my 20's.
Yeah it's actually crazy how much they dumbed down the game and muted the cyberpunk aesthetic from the concept art. I will never get over how there's a station wagon in the game
There's nothing inherently wrong with station wagon existing. Normal shit exists in 2077.
But I agree on the aesthetic issue. Having no real cosmetics beyond clothes and some character creation implants was disappointing. I wanted to be able to fully borg-out. They could have included at least 2 or 3 frames to swap into. I imagine there were some severe engine issues preventing implementation of stuff like that. They couldn't even get the engine to properly implement dual wielding from the Player's perspective.
I really find cyberpunk as a genre distasteful. I’m more of a fan of “things are good and we are going to make them better” or “things are bad and we all genuinely and fervently as a collective find this to be an intolerable situation and will work to change it” settings and stories in sci fi
that's why cyberpunk is so realistic
Cyberpunk future where people can replace their entire bodies
EXCEPT IN THIS SPECIFIC CASE BECAUSE UHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH WE NEED FORCED DRAMA
Trigger are hacks what else is new?
You might enjoy Post-Cyberpunk as a genre. Bruce Sterling was probably its most prolific author.
tvtropes.org
While Cyberpunk focuses on technology going beyond our control and dooming us all, Post-Cyberpunk states that humans cause technology to go awry, and that responsible use of technology could actually bring us to a new age. Simply put, Post-Cyberpunk basically reins in Cyberpunk's excess and tries to give us a more open vision of the future.

Cyberpunk future where people can replace their entire bodies
You can. But if you flatline first there's little chance of bringing you back.
And why is that a good thing? It's fiction my dude, it can be happy and it can be improved. If you want a miserable, unfixable situation that's only ever going to get worse, you need only to look outside.
I might check that out thanks for that. Also, realism isn’t so important to me nor characters acting like real people do now. I’m a huge Trekkie through and through and I like settings and stories that are more aspirational in nature, as in characters and stories that are larger than life and represent ideals for us to strive towards.
Are his worlds post-cyberpunk in that there was a dark cyberpunk setting before that they transitioned out of, or ones where that dark cyberpunk setting just straight up never happens before the post-cyberpunk reality?
Why kind of rules does CP2077 operate on?
GITS: You are made up of your brain and memories
MGR: As long as you have a brainstem we can shove into a cyborg body you're good to go
Kaiba: As long as we have a SINGLE FUCKING MEMORY that we can stuff into an artificial body...
Can be a bit of both depending on the story.
Post-Cyberpunk errs towards the latter, since it doesn't necessarily describe a future which is post-Cyberpunk, the genre itself just came AFTER Cyberpunk, hence it's Post-Cyberpunk.
same as GITS, your brain is irreplaceable but unlike GITS you instantly go insane if it is removed from your body and put in something else
Adam Smasher is a legend for surviving that procedure
Space Opera is the best sci fi genre
Mostly GITS, but maybe not quite as advanced? Cyberpunk also deals with the dehumanizing aspect of losing all your meat - individuals are more or less resistant to the psychosis which comes on from the trauma of losing your body (whether willingly or unwillingly), which results often in those individuals disassociating and viewing other people as "meat".
Someone like Smasher is actually remarkable in the setting for surviving the volume of surgeries he's been through. I believe Pondsmith said Smasher was already full-blown psycho before his surgeries, whereas David just had incredibly high Empathy/Humanity and could thus stave off the effects of cyberpsychosis for longer than most.
Smasher was already full-blown psycho
There's plenty of psychos in the world and has to be only partially the reason why Smasher is Smasher. He's actually the "Just built different, I'm special" that David thought he was
I'm partial to the indonesian and czech beccas
they did pretty well
imo the spanish and german beccas really sound like they phoned it in. They really didn't capture becca's personality and demeanor.
Wow, 24 faggots who like anime. This definitely proves a pattern and isn't cherry picking of the highest degree. I think you should boycott breathing since they are into that too.
Yeah he did well. Still don't get why reddit loves this fucker so much however
Rebecca is love. Rebecca is life.
He's actually the "Just built different, I'm special" that David thought he was
But specifically, Smasher wasn't someone with high Empathy/Humanity. He was a one-of-a-kind psycho for sure, built different, yes. But he and David were at opposite ends of the spectrum when it comes to cyber-psychosis.
AD Police rules: The more of your original body you replace with chrome, the more you lose touch with your own humanity and the less empathy you have for other people.
About the same as it's with Shadowrun, but at least Shadowrun has bioware and magic as an option of making your character into an unfeeling cyborg every single time.
I LIKE YOU!
COME OVER TO MY HOUSE AND FUCK MY SISTER!

Hot
You know, I originally thought I'd reply to that dude that his attempt to shock the people who would enjoy Cyberpunk wouldn't work because they're all sadists who love seeing characters die, or masochists who love making themselves feel awful. I'm kind of glad you proved my point.

What if I never expected them to do all that stuff but still had faith they'd make a pretty good game regardless?
Then surely you were disappointed because they didn't.
Same here. Still going to rewatch the anime for free.
I think it was a pretty good game. Put about 200hrs into it.
Why would you do something like that to yourself?
kills off 2nd most interesting character to generic villain who jumps on guns asshole first
I put 176.6 hours in it. Excluding the endings it was probably a 6/10 game. Including the endings I'd say that even 0/10 would be too generous.
Bold of you to assume Smasher still has an asshole.
Because I'm better than you.
Oh neat! A Becca thre-

Nevermind.

I'd give it closer to an 8/10. I only played from the PL 2.0 update.
Graphics: 9.5/10. Looked great. Ran great (PS5).
Sound: 9.5/10. Sounded great. Guns sounded meaty. VA was top notch. Music, both radio and ambient, felt right.
Story: 7/10. It was fine. Serviceable to the setting. Some side Gigs had stronger story telling than the Main Gig.
Game-play: 7/10. Played fine. Controlled pretty good. Would have preferred some more combat options beyond shoot/slash/mind-wizard.
If they hadn't fucked up and made the ending more enjoyable then you would not have to see everyone rehashing the shittiest of scenes in all of anime.
Not better, just different. You just like hurting yourself.
Nono I'm better and I can easily beat you in a fight.
Stupid Marvel esque ironic joke segment immediately followed by brutal murder.
Very reddit.
I played it at launch. And returned to it after PL.
Graphics 8. Nothing too spectacular for its time. Serviceable, but not amazing.
Sound 7. Music entirely forgettable, can't remember a single track from the OST. Sounds mostly acceptable, guns sound like utter ass.
Story 0. Not a single redeemable thing about the story, pure miserywank. Any qualities that might be enjoyable were ruined by the endings.
Gameplay 5. No third person view, simplistic combat, way too easy even on hardest difficulties.
On average it could be a 6 but I'm going to have to remove 8 points because of the story.
