Is true that Vanilla Dark Souls 2 was a much better game?
I don't hate DS2 but i think it's kind of shit and obnoxious, supposedly a lot of the worst design choices like the spamming gank traps, horrid bossruns, needless stone statue roadblocks etc just weren't present back then?

Scholar is a much better version imo

Let's be upfront and state the facts: DS2 was average at best in all interations.

That said when playing it originally I never ran into retarded things or anything that felt extremely unfair.

With Scholar the mob position changes seemed to be net retarded. Several areas would just leash entire zones for no reason. Lots of wonky balance issues in DLC.

Base 2 was definitely a better game but Scholar prob has the worst balance so as long as you can stomach all the retardation abusing jank stuff actually makes it pretty fun.

Either's gonna filter you cause you're too soft

vanilla is better for speedrunners, for normal non-trans people scholar is better

The only things scholar does worse are petrified statues and Heide Tower being retarded. In vanilla, those Heide knights were more spread out around the world and not all concentrated in that tower. The tower is really silly after beating dragonrider because they all wake up, and the drake before the bridge makes the boss WAY later in the game more lame (it's not a good fight anyway, but the fact it becomes a reused enemy from earlier in the game is pitiful).
Everywhere else is better in Scholar.

vanilla ds2 before pre amana nerf was unparalleled kino

So that's why people say vanilla is better? Because a bunch of trannies said so? It's like if normies played the chinese version of oot or some shit because the text is faster

DS2 was average at best in all interations

hard disagree
even at it's very best it's still subpar

what the fuck do you mean vanilla ds2, who the fuck plays modded souls games?

I do remember gwyn's lightning bolts being more powerful and having fewer enemies

99% of leashing entire zones is people being retarded and running through areas. You get ambushed far more in vanilla. And then you'll come up with literal one area in the whole game to prove me wrong.

Is true that Vanilla Dark Souls 2 was a much better game?

much better

It's marginally better. It is still the same game though, just different item placements and less ganky (not by much, mind you).
At the end of the day it's still DaS 2

Vanilla also applies to games without DLC/Expansions anon...
But here it's just the 2014 release because it's different from Scholar. The DLCs aren't changed at all in Scholar except for the key acquisitions.

Third worlders

Played both
Scholar is better
The problem with the actual base (as in launch, you can still pirate it btw on PC) is that it was 'hard' (since players weren't comprehending the concept of 'use a bow or something at range when you fight archers who can plink you from a distance instead of running like a reatard' or 'agility pro, level adaptability or attunement'

I will say that once life gems being bought infinitely after Last Giant was in, it was a much more accessible game for retards but still, people bitched since they had to learn to use common sense

Like how you were about level 80 in 5-6 hours and could do any build you wanted

i never got any of the complaints as someone who played an absolute fuckton of ds2 on the ps3. most of the problems seem to have with scholar is the game punishing you for trying to rush or being too much of a pussy, like the soldiers waking up being on a timer in fotfg so you can't fuck around and need to get killing, or the alonne knights coming at you as soon as you enter the main area of iron keep, except they're still timed to come at you in waves and you can skip them by either beating smelter demon for the bonfire or just unlocking the shortcut ladder behind the door and hotfooting it there

who the fuck plays modded souls games?

not playing the kino randomizer

fucking console niggers

You just reminded me I was doing a DS2 run on PS3 from December but I got filtered by the low resolution and uncapped inconsistent frame rate so I stopped and just replayed on steam.

like the soldiers waking up being on a timer in fotfg

You mean the soldiers that wake up IF you step on them?

is that actually how it is? i thought the rest started waking up as soon as you aggro'd one of them, but that's even less of an excuse

I can't make that judgment I just know I absolutely despised SOTFS when I decided to play DS2 again, it felt like playing a shitty difficulty rebalancing mod that made the game way more tedious. I have to wonder if I'd feel that way if I didn't put hundreds of hours into the original on release & instead played that version without any previous experience.

Yes, anon. That's how it is. You can actually go through that fog wall without killing a single enemy. In fact, you can go all the way to bonfire with granny merchant (I think it's called Cardinal Tower bonfire) without killing a single enemy.

Trust me. I did 30k SM challenge runs several times.

Why? That's an easily fixable problem.

I learned the other day there's 2 critical hit animations for parries. I never did the one where you press instantly like other games, it just didn't work the first time so I always waited for them to fall on the ground. Apparently the ground one does more damage anyway so I wasn't missing out.

No, that's just a retarded meme.

Why would I play the PS3 version on emulator? That's just silly. I get using emulator for games not on PC or shit on PC, but DS2 is fine on PC.

he doesn't know

Is this some minute difference between PS3/360 scholar compared to PC Vanilla with all the updates

Everytime it happened to me it was literally just walking into the area.

he's unaware

I liked the original more, I hated what they did to Heide's tower. That Dragon was just stupid.

i was just walking into the area

just finished my umpteenth SotFS playthrough literally like 2 hours ago, all bosses except ludzallen, so it's fresh on my mind.
domo3000 has some great videos breaking down why, if you wanna get specific, but in most cases Vanilla is fucking dogshit and SotFS is an improvement in every way.
also DS2 is so fucking PEAK and FUN and i love it, easily my favorite of the trilogy. it has some of most unique and scenic areas in the series (despite the billboard trees in the forest, yeah i know), its the only one where NG+ shakes things up, and the bosses are fine at worst and quite fun at best, with a few obvious outliers like Covetous. as far as the boss discourse goes i think it's insane that ds2 gets shit on for its bosses when ds1 exists and has literally like 2 enjoyable bosses, and that's me being charitable. ds1 is also just an all around worse game in general. ds2 becomes tons of fun when you stop trying to run past everything. great game will probably play it again before the year's end.

you can get max lvl weapon 4 bosses in right before fighting the spider nigger
previously you had to go to hell to do that which was a way bigger stat check

rushing past several enemies into a narrow tiny corridor when theres lines of armored foes and armored turtles behind you

retarded action
i do think that one boss run is a bit fucked up but im sure its in big part because the boss itself is easy
i just started playing sotfs and yeah im surprised at how early you can get

I wish i had sotfs with vanilla visuals. SOTFS seems way better in gameplay all around which makes it superior, but sadly they downgraded the lighting by a lot

Dark Souls 2 is an action RPG masterpiece. I don't give a shit how dissimilar it is to Dark Souls 1. I put 600+ hours into that shit in a few months and regret nothing. Hex build was fun as fuck

Yes it's better. Specifically the level design is far far better due to it being much more open ended withount random petrified statues blocking everything.

Outside of that it's not much different. I never really noticed the difference in enemy placements besides the initial changes to Heides tower and fofg.

The thing that I hate the most about scholar is the needless fucking with the intended level path in some areas.

They cordoned off part of the fucking tutorial area with a stone statue. Meaning that players will never be able to read the lessons in that section until they get a fragrant branch of yore which by the time they get they would have already learned whatever skills that part of the tutorial would have taught.

There's no need to fight the gargoyles since the key to the bastille blacksmith that they guarded is now just available to pick up elsewhere in the level.

The Aldia's Keep dragon skeleton ambush setpiece from all the trailers is now a secret hidden behind a puzzle.

you can just skip the entire dragon area now thanks to a convenient zipline

the alcove where the undead crypt bonfire was originally hidden is now just a pointless dead end

There's probably even more that I've simply forgotten.

>There's no need to fight the gargoyles

Thank GOD!

Scholar is much more open ended.

Everything you said is an improvement in Scholar. Aldia's Keep especially looks empty without the dragon skeleton to add some atmosphere.

imo for every improvement scholar did, it did something bum fuck retarded. so there is no clear cut winner and it's a matter of picking your poison.

There never should have been a "need" to fight some optional, only suitable for endgame, boss fight, in the first place. It's an extra little bonus and that's all it should be. Scholar is the better game by every measure. Undead Crypt doesn't even have skeletons in vanilla. No skeletons in a crypt? And the ghosts that ambush you are unavoidable. Scholar makes it so you can destroy the bells to keep the wraiths from spawning. There's tons of little gimmicks like this scattered throughout the areas in scholar, that in vanilla is just rooms of guys you fight, and that's it.
