But they revealed shit in a completely different way in season 2 whereas season 1 was almost shot for shot remake outside of crust bustin and retcon/changing the spores (which they them retconned in season 2 back to be like game for reasons)

It's actually getting kind of funny how much television acts like they're such a big medium standard and the games should be kid shit, and yet even with all of my problems for TLOU and other narrative games aside, they're still generally more engrossing and when done right can really make a player feel like they're a part of the push instead of simply pressing the buttons to make the next cutscene happen. Neil Druckmann trying to adapt his revenge porn story to TV was never going to end well, and the huge downgrade in quality while the story bends itself over backwards to include new scenes to try to justify everything happening feels like he 180'd in trying to get people to hang on as much as possible.

It was perfectly fucking laid out and they fucked it up. They just couldn't help meddling with it, the fuckers. They had a god damn home run and they decided to walk it and they lost the game.

Season 1 was okay because the first game's story is easy to follow with a beginning, middle and end. Part 2 just doesn't lend itself well to an adaptation because the narrative is too akwardly paced with flashback sequences acting as moments of levity during the darker parts of the story. Also, the gameplay segments are extremely important to the core narrative. Without that interactivity, you've got nothing to work with.

Ellie's characterization is also a big miss - they capture her childishness and immaturity BUT they don't capture enough of her mean streak. The lack of a journal and the inability to read her inner thoughts is a huge loss for the show.

with books or comics, film "elevates" the source material, that's not to say the result is better, but its bigger, adds a new dimension, the things on the page are now walking and talking etc.
with video games, film/TV is actually a step down from the source, because it's essentially just the game but with none of the interactive storytelling, a different art direction, characters that can never be exactly what was in the game etc.

the only way to make a video game adaptation good is to use the setting but not rehash the story from the source.
